Chapter 3 A gentle breeze swept over Cinder, bringing to him the perfume of night blooming flowers and just a trace of rain. In the distance thunder rumbled. Crickets chirped and the frogs from a nearby pond added to the symphony. He’d walked in the darkness for so long, he no longer recalled the warmth of the sun unless he felt it coming up from the heated pavement. Overhead, a bevy of stars shone, the moon absent. There were no people around the development, all the workers gone home for the evening or out for a beer among comrades. The two or three houses completed had yet to gain occupants. Not for the first time over the last three months Cinder entertained the idea of buying everything, from the finished homes to the untouched land. Even if he didn’t, there was enough acreage aroun
