As she lay on her bed, her whole body felt like it had been torn to pieces and reassembled. She knew she had to go to the hospital because the wound was too deep, but she couldn't find the strength to do so.
She prayed for sleep to take her and ease the pain, but sleep now seemed like a luxury from the past. There was no way her brain could sleep with all the pain in her body. She had lost a lot of blood, and she doubted she would survive much longer.
Louisa lay on the bed thinking to herself. If she hadn't gone to that retched bar, none of this would have happened. It was a very foolish thing to do. But there was no changing the past. She had already gone to the bar, and she was bitten. All she needed to do now was to wait and see what happened to her.
As she tried to shift to a more comfortable position, she heard her phone go off.
Good. She thought of asking whoever was calling to get help. She was too weak and in pain to do anything by herself. Her phone was on the far edge of the bed and she struggled to try and reach it. Wincing and panting, she slowly pushed herself to it until her fingers closed around it.
But by that time, the phone had stopped ringing.
She checked the caller id and frowned.
It was the Captain. She wondered why he was calling her at this hour; he rarely called her during the day. The last time she had received a call from the Captain outside of working hours was a year ago. She and her colleagues had been informed during the night that there was a crime involving r**e and possible murder that was taking place at a certain named hotel.
They had gone to the hotel and were just in time to save two women from being murdered.
She was not going to answer a call from the Captain. She had never failed to do anything she was required to do before, and the thought of telling the Captain that she would be unable to do her duty was unbearable to her. She would rather not answer the call at all. She watched her phone as it kept ringing until it went silent.
Sighing, she looked at the ceiling and listened to her body as it complained about the numerous things that weren't right in it.
But five minutes later, her phone rang again. She frowned at it. Maybe there's been an emergency at the station. She dazedly thought that had she been alright when the Captain called, she would have stopped whatever she was doing and rushed to the police station immediately.
But this time it wasn't the captain that was calling. It was one of her colleagues, Lance.
Of all her colleagues, Lance was the only one that she was the closest with. They weren't necessarily friends, but she talked to him more, but that was made possible because they were partners.
She decided to answer Lance's call. Perhaps she would explain why she ignored the Captain and ask him to come over once he was free of duty.
"Lance," She said in a very weak voice that worried him instantly. He had never known her to show weakness before.
She was always tough and alert and full of energy.
All the time.
Even when she was tired, she pretended to be full of energy in front of her bosses. That was how much she was dedicated to her job.
But hearing her sounding so weak, Lance couldn't help but worry.
"Louisa, are you alright?"
"Yes, I am fine. Did the captain call you, too?" she said in the same weak voice.
"He called me a while ago. He told me you didn't answer your phone," Lance said.
"I couldn't bear to disappoint him, Lance. I need a break."
She could imagine him frowning since she had just said that she was fine.
"You are not okay, Louisa. Tell me what happened," he demanded.
"It is a long story. I am sure you have emergency business to attend to. Call me when you are done and I will tell you what happened."
"Okay. I am on my way to the police station as we speak. There is a man on the loose that is...I don't know...mad?"
"Why do you think he's mad?" Louisa's voice no longer sounded too weak. Her police instincts got the better of her. "What does he do?"
"I was told that he goes around biting people. He bit two people today and left them to bleed to death in their homes, both of whom lived alone. The first man to be bitten was found by his ex wife. She claimed to have seen the man just after he finished biting her ex husband, but when the police went to the house, there was no one in the house, though they found droplets of blood on the floor, confirming the violence that took place. The second one was a woman. She was taken into her home by the man around 3 pm. It seemed the woman was in a relationship and her boyfriend hid under the bed when he heard her coming in with another guy. According to the man, he heard the two of them making love and later the woman screamed as if in great pain. Afraid that the girlfriend was being murdered, he stayed still under the bed until the man had gone. But his cheating girlfriend was alive, just bitten on the neck. She was taken to the hospital to be examined and treated."
Listening to Lance, Louisa felt her heart threaten to thump right out of her rib cage.
She wasn't the only one.
