The Elite Class

“We’ll go to the mall from here.” Grandma Alexakis said as they walked towards the spa. “Yes, Grandma.” Prim responded. She felt confused and almost dizzy as her world continued to spin. She was calling a woman she had met an hour ago, Grandma, she had an ice god husband she was now convinced often forgot he had a wife. Because why else would he leave like that? Not even a word of goodbye. A suggestion on how she should spend her day would be asking too much of an ice god. But he could at least say goodbye. Good thing his grandmother saved the day. Prim went into the fancy spa and smiled uncomfortably as the old lady showed her off to her old lady friends. She felt out of her league here. These women were usually the kind she waited on in her many jobs before her wedding. Now she sat with them sipping tea and getting pedicures. “My dear, where did you say you worked again?” A woman with a nasal voice asked. From what Prim had seen so far, she was the official t****k-standard-Karen. “I was considering an employment offer before my wedding,” Prim responded. “That means you are jobless.” The woman smiled, it was an insulting sneer that closely resembled a smile. “Yes,” Prim said confidently. “Why don’t you just work at your parents' company like everyone else? Youngsters these days. Who did you say your parents were again?” First of all Karen, not everyone has a parents’ company to go work at, so how about you take a stroll outside in the real world and touch some grass. “I have not had the pleasure of telling you about my parents yet.” Prim said aloud, smiling politely. “Yes, Katie. We have not talked about her parents.” Grandma Alexakis said, “But I believe I asked about your son. Forgive this old woman's memory. What is Charlie up to these days? You know, after getting out of rehab?” Missy Karen pouted her lips and snapped at the pedicurist at her feet. That was the end of Prim’s discomfort. No one asked her any more uncomfortable questions. “You remind me of a friend from my twenties.” Grandma Alexakis said as they walked into the mall later. Prim turned to her, unsure why the woman had said so, but the old lady was smiling. “The wealthy often lose touch with reality. Don't take Katie’s behavior earlier to heart.” Primrose could not help smiling at her. Grandma Alexakis stopped at the center of the brightly lit mall and all the guards froze a short distance away. “These are the hands of a hard worker.” The woman said, taking both Prim’s hands in hers. “And I love that for you.” Way to go Prim. Those callused hands from the factory had been so easy to spot. Dammit. She should not have skimmed on the manicure before the wedding. She should have just gone to that high end salon. “So how did you and Egan first meet?” The old lady said as they continued their walk. “Huh?” Prim said, looking up from her fingers. Who said poverty could be scrubbed away so quickly? These hands were supposed to be softer since she had just gone to the elite salon with the old lady. The old lady was still looking at her, waiting. “Wedding.” Prim blurted out. “Oh. At a wedding,” Grandma Alexakis was nodding at her. Then she looked away thoughtfully. Prim felt bad for letting her assume they had met at another person’s wedding. Well. Technically, they had first met at her and Julian’s wedding. But that was not the truth. And she felt bad lying to this sweet lady. But the Ice god had warned her to say nothing. And it was sound advice, although the man didn’t know it. Because as soon as she opened her mouth, it would be difficult to shut it. “This is a good start.” She heard Grandma Alexakis say, bringing her back to the present. Prim gasped as she looked in disbelief at what the woman was holding up in front of her. She looked around the luxury shop they were now in. Their guards and the attendants seemed to be making an effort to keep their faces neutral. “Oh. Don’t look so flustered. This is a women’s shop my dear.” Grandma Alexakis chuckled, looking at her. Not with these very male guards that just saw you hold up lingerie that looks like bondage. Good grief. She could not even imagine the images that would be running through their heads at the moment. “Well, do you like it, child?” “Yes, Grandma.” Prim smiled politely. The old lady nodded in satisfaction and held it out to an attendant who claimed it and added it to the pile of other things they had collected so far. “Egan is very busy, and often without a care. We could leave that boy for a month, and he would not realize his wife needed clothes.” Ouch. What were these she was wearing? Sacks? “Not that yours are in any way bad,” The old lady said in a hurry, seeing her face. “I in fact love their style. Very chic.” Woah grandma, who taught you that word? “But as Egan’s wife, you would need to show up at special places with him. And I don’t want you to have to worry about what to wear.” The woman moved close to whisper to her, “Men never understand these things. Always so clueless.” Prim smiled. She realized then that she liked this old lady. “And you need certain things to get him to CARE.” The old lady stopped before another rack, and held up a thong. Prim had no idea what held the piece of clothing at the back, and the tiny net at the crotch area did not exactly look like it could cover anything either. The face of the nearest guard was as red as a tomato this time. Nope. This was too much. “I have to use the restroom, Grandma.” “Oh. Of course.” The old lady gestured at the red-faced guard to go with her. The man kept such great distance from her as they located the restroom that she wondered if he feared she would jump him. He stopped outside the corridor that led to the restroom. As she walked down the corridor, she noticed a suspicious looking man standing there. “You shouldn’t be here.” She said loudly, frowning in irritation. The man nodded and began to hurry off. Weirdo! She opened the restroom door to find Aurora standing there with a gun.
