“C’mon, Pillow!” I yelled, rushing forward into the field. The breeze was hitting my face as I ran faster, knowing that my dog was already behind me. Pillow barked twice. His paws were beating into the ground as he ran enthusiastically along with me.
“Okay, I....I give up,” I said, releasing arduous breaths as I stopped from running. Finding a bench under a tree, I sat on it and leaned backward. Looking up, the sky was spotless and blue. The summer sun stared down at me, giving me a warm sensation. Strangely, my husky seemed to enjoy the heat as he sat down by my feet. His tongue was panting steady breaths and then he looked up at me.
I curved down to pat his head, his snowy fur was smooth and soft like a pillow and he hid his azure eyes from the sensation I was giving. “Do you think Nyx is already up?”
He whimpered as a response.
“First things first, I have to get an ice cream. Second, your friends are missing you, certainly so we really have to stop over there. And then we have to get food supplies for our little family or else we might starve to death. Do you want that?”
Pillow just looked at me that made my brows drew together. We just exchanged a glance for a mean time before I sprinted quickly from my seat. “Gotcha!” I laughed, giving him a peek. He was flabbergasted for a moment before he immediately leaped up and chased me.
We jogged around the park first before we went to the ice cream booth beside a massive tree. Bob already gave me a smile as he saw me approaching with my dog beside me. “Hey, Bob. How’s the business doing?”
He shrugged his shoulder. “Always business. The usual?”
I nodded, so he started to prepare my vanilla flavored ice cream with a special Hershey’s topping over it. I waited while I watched my dog tailing for his own tail. When he got tired, he just sat beside me and began to lick his fur while he wagged his tail.
Pillow was the quiet one among my dogs. Nyx, his daughter, was grumpy sometimes but always sleep during the day. And his wife, Allona, was the one who always jump on me whenever she was excited or missed me. They were my little family of husky with my Persian cat, Damascus, who always hide and then crawled on the bed silently whenever I was sleeping. And that reminded me, among my pets, my turtle, Tala, was the quietest of all. Of course, and a slowpoke too.
“By the way, there was this girl who came here looking for a job,” Bob chimed in my train of thoughts that made my head turn to him. “Zoey mentioned that you need an extra hand so I told her to come to the shop.”
He handed me my ice cream and I paid for it. “Thanks, Bob. We really need an extra help. There are so many pets being abandoned in the street nowadays due to foolish people, not to mention that every month, there are always someone who give their pet to our charity because of their lack of satisfaction. Our pet room is nearly full. Zoey will transfer to our school with me and Cole will start college soon so we won’t have much time to take care all of them. At least, we have Barbara and Liam to do it but we need someone who can take care of the shop during weekends.”
Bob smirked, then gave me a thumb up. “I’m sure she’s hired. She has this confident presence that I believe Barbara would notice in the first hand.”
“Then let’s see,” I acknowledged and finished my cone of ice cream. “See you later, Bob.”
He nodded in return as I stormed off. Pillow automatically followed behind me.
The Woodley pet shop owner was me. My Grandma was the one who established it (with Barbara as her assistant) before my Grandpa met her. Instead of changing it to Hartley which was my family name, I preferred to keep the store name that way for the memories of my Grammy. Tala was her pet when she was still with us but due to oldness, she’d gone in my arms, wishing that I should take care of her little turtle and her shop. So I took Tala with my already growing family and promised to take a really good care of her. Sometimes, she would become my priorities among my pets which Damascus didn’t like much. That grumpy, jealous cat almost clawed Tala inside her home. I planned to punish him by locking him in the cage for a week. However, being a pet lover, I only kept her inside for a day. Since that day, he never bothered Tala anymore.
Oh well, my pet shop was not like any other pet shop. Its purpose was to help every animal wandering alone in the street. Rescues all the reported, abused pet from their cruel owner. Took all the pets who were betrayed by people they served their loyalty. And then if someone who were willing to take them from us, we would investigate their livelihood first before they could able to take one for free.
My Grammy was that awesome. She should be the ambassador of animals during her lifetime. Obviously, I got almost all from her. My personality and beliefs and also when it came to loving animals.
When I reached the pet shop, I noticed that the main attraction behind the glass window today was a cottontail rabbit. I pouted as I looked at it closer, wondering who abandoned this adorable creature. It was so cute that I wanted to carry it in my arms but my stupid allergy would be happy if I did.
I didn’t want that. I wouldn’t risk having rashes all over my skin. It would be horrible, not to mention that school would start next week. That means, I have to be in my best state with the whole cheerleading team. Especially, for Bailey.
Thinking of her made me grin in excitement. Even though I really wanted this little creature in front of me, the satisfaction of hugging Baby Bunny, the gift Bailey gave me on my birthday, made the pout vanish from my lips. Every night I fall asleep, I would embrace it tight. I think Damascus got jealous because he suddenly jumped on me while I was sleeping. He has never done that before.
A bark from Pillow pulled me out of my trance. Giving him my attention, I petted him before I entered the shop.
“Welcome to Woodley Pet shop, b***h!” my best friend, Zoey, greeted me playfully. I stuck my tongue out to her, went behind the counter and held her in my arms. She hugged me back so I carried her slightly and spun her around. I saw Pillow hopped in excitement with us. Zoey giggled, hitting my shoulder to push herself down.
I did as I hauled away before ruffling her jet black hair. “How are you doing, Black Kitty?”
She raised her brow, swatting away my hand from her head. “You ditched us to spend your birthday with your team. So I’m really, really mad at you right now.”
“Awww,” I cooed, giving her a pinch on her cheek. “My pretty girl, I am really sorry, but my captain planned that summer getaway for me which I appreciated very much. It wasn’t my place to refuse so I obliged. In addition, I invited you but you were the one who refused, remember?”
She frowned as she sat on the chair. “Of course, I would refuse. I don’t even know them. How am I supposed to enjoy that?”
I hugged her from behind and rested my chin on the top of her head. “I was there. You know that I am fun to be with, no matter where I am.”
“Cocky much?” She giggled, hitting my arms softly.
I laughed and pulled her backward to lean her body on me. “Well, it’s not that late. We can celebrate tonight and then you can give me your gift for me.”
She looked up at me and grinned. “You’re gonna love it.”
“I’m sure. Even if you give me a toothpick as a gift, I would love it,” I said, giving her a kiss on her forehead.
“You’re exaggerating,” she commented. “And by the way, a hot girl came here looking for a part time job. At first, I thought she was a customer, but surprisingly, she told me that she needed a job. Mom seemed to like her because she instantly made her say ‘yes’.”
“How hot is she?” I asked, a little curious. Barbara was a picky woman so I wondered how this hot girl got her easily. Bob even praised her with a grin on his face.
Zoey snickered and pulled away from my embrace before spinning her chair to confront me. “Maybe even hotter than your little crush in your school.”
I rolled my eyes. “That’s impossible. How can you assumed that if you haven’t seen her personally? Neither caught a glimpse of her from a photo.”
Out of a sudden, she burst out laughing, clutching her stomach. “That’s because you.... You only took a photo of her ass, you.... pervert.”
“I’m supposed to take her boobs but she suddenly turned and bent down so my camera ended up taking her ass instead,” I reasoned out, crossing my arms.
Zoey continued to laugh. “You’re still a p*****t though.”
“No! It’s a proof of my undying loyalty to her body,” I protested, covering her mouth to stop her from laughing unceasingly. “I worship it every night before I sleep.”
“I don’t even know why I have a weird best friend,” she added, once she pulled my hand off her mouth. “You like girls but don’t even have the courage to be in commitment. You adore rabbits the most yet you can’t have it. You’re the only person I know who doesn’t use f*******:. And not to mention, you have this huge crush for a girl but you still flirt with others. You’re an epic fail, dude.”
I sighed and leaned over the counter. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’m an epic failure for being too adorable and hot.”
This time, she was the one who stuck her tongue out. I hurriedly carried Pillow beside me to shove his tongue to my best friend’s but Barbara suddenly came with so many packets of pet supply inside her arms. Releasing my dog, I rushed over to help her. She gave me an appreciated smile as I took it and put it over the counter.
“I heard your voice from inside so I already gathered the things that you need,” Barbara said, giving me a pat on my shoulder.
“Thank you very much,” I thanked her, checking all the thing if they were complete. “Mmmm...Let’s see. Damascus’ milk...My huskies turkey and chicken grill. Also, their huge boner.” That made Zoey giggled again and Pillow barked happily. “And strawberries for my Tala. Okay, all set.”
“We’ll just send it to you tonight. I noticed that you didn’t bring your car with you,” Zoey offered that earned a grin from me.
“Thanks, kitty!” I said and then turned my attention to Barbara. “Come at my house at 8 in the evening. I’ll tell Mia to cook something special.”
She agreed, nodding her head. I waved my hand for Pillow and he got up from the floor and trailed behind me. “See you later, guys.”
As I skipped out of the shop, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I fished it out and looked at the screen to see Hillary’s message. I opened it quickly and then smiled to myself.
‘Ready for shopping spree for senior year? Meet us at the usual mall at 6. See you in a bit. :x ’
Getting excited, I spun around to my dog. “Ready for a run?!”
Without warning, Pillow dashed in advance, leaving me stunned at my own place.
Ohhhh, he got me this time.
********
“You know what? I don’t like this at all,” Hilary complained, throwing the dress to a surprised sales lady. Sighing, I looked to my right to see my captain, turning off her phone in annoyance. It was blaring the whole time, so it must be her junior doll, Olivia.
Turning to my left, Bailey was rummaging through the rackets of dress obliviously. From her feet, my eyes ogled to her slender smooth legs. She was wearing a jean short and a graphic T-shirt. Her brown hair was pulled into a bun as usual. So simple yet she was so captivating. Her legs were so captivating. I just didn’t know why we were keeping a distance since our summer getaway ended.
Feeling the beast within me, I couldn’t contain myself from licking my upper lips and Arisa seemed to notice when I heard her fake coughed. Once I took a glance to her, she raised her brow in amusement and I just shook my head at her.
She smiled wickedly and I knew she had a dangerous idea in her head. Once she took out a dress, she handed it to Bailey. “Why don’t you try this, Bailey? I’m sure it will be amazing.”
Bailey made a confused expression and then after observing the dress first, she took it from Arisa and galloped in the fitting room without even glancing at me.
Brushing it off, I busied myself by starting to pick out my outfit. However, Arisa and Hilary yanked me in the fitting room area as well with an impish grin on their faces. “What the hell? I have to pick my turning-on-Bailey outfit first.”
They giggled in unison and then Hilary spoke, “But first, you have to turn on yourself.”
Without getting the idea, Bailey suddenly called out behind the door, “Hey, gals. Are you there? Ugh....Can you help me with this stupid dress?”
Arisa smirked and nudged me to the side. “We’ll just go to the next store. Tiana, help her out!”
Now getting their wicked plan, a grin crept to my lips and gave my smart ass friends two thumbs up. They smiled to me and sent their good lucks before they walked out of the store, leaving me in ecstasy.
Continuing with the plan, I bravely knocked on the door. “Ummm, you need help?”
The door opened slightly and then Bailey waved her hand to invite me in. Once I entered and locked the door, I turned around and then my jaw dropped on the floor. Oh f**k! This is the best fitting room I’ve ever had. I want to live here for the rest of my life!
“What’s wrong? Can you close your mouth shut?” Bailey said, shaking her head in disbelief. She was holding the dress to cover her chest, her exposed back was facing me. Obviously, she needed my help to pull up the zipper on the back of her preppy dress.
I cleared my throat and thought of an excuse. “I’m sorry, I was just surprised seeing myself in the mirror being so breathtaking and gorgeous.”
Bailey rolled her eyes. “Just help me zip this up and then you can take your time being surprised of how uncanny you are.”
“Yes, ma’am.” I nodded and lifted my hands to reach the zipper lock. When my hand touched her bare back, an unexplainable spark ignited through me. I didn’t know if she felt it because I was too focused on my knees getting weak.
My eyes raised to see her hands rested in the mirror as if she needed a support and then I noticed that her eyes were close. Taking advantage of the situation, I took her waist, embracing her from behind. She didn’t seem surprised at my advance so I took further action.
Closing my arms around her tighter, I leaned my mouth to her ears and whispered softly, “Thanks for the bunny.”
Finally, her amber eyes paid attention to me, its pool were filled with indescribable feelings. “I... It was nothing. It’s just a toy.”
No, it was not nothing. She really thought about it. She knew I loved rabbit the most so she gave me one even though it was not the actual one. It was enough to make me so happy. “But thanks, anyway. I love it,” I said, leaning further and kissed the corner of her lips.
She was stunned for a moment before she blinked twice. I waited for her reaction but she was not doing anything. We just stared at each other with me wearing a happy smile. Her tanned shoulder was exposed because I haven’t zipped her dress up. Her eyes fell down on my lips as if she wanted to kiss me. I wanted to kiss her too. It was my greatest dream. No matter where we are, or what the situation, I always desired to press mine to hers. All of mine to hers.
But then, out of the blue, she spoke, “Is that really easy for you to flirt with everybody?”
I smirked, ignoring her angry voice and buried my face in her neck. “Yeah.... But it’s really hard when it comes to you.”
She chuckled, her throat vibrated against my cheek. “So what’s the difference between me and the girl in the beach?”
That made me frown and looked at her through the mirror. She was staring directly at me, waiting for my answer. I didn’t know what was she talking about until I remembered that there was this girl at the beach that kissed me under the night sky. And I wondered why Bailey was asking me this if she was making out with this Timofreak. Instantly, the rage started to build within me as I remembered that moment when they were making out like there was no tomorrow.
Turning my head to look directly at her, I gave her a sarcastic smile. “The difference is you are too blind to see that I’m a better kisser than the guy you were making out with at the beach.”
Without getting any permission, I broke the space between us and kissed her fully in the lips.
Surprisingly, this was too much for my greatest dream.
