Just a typical day
Catherine POV
I wake up at the top of a tall tree, resting on a large branch. Something I’ve grown accustomed to after sleeping like this for a couple of years. I have a sleeping bag draped around me, ensuring I stay warm as the temperature drops in the middle of the night. My sleeping bag is worn and tattered, covered everywhere with sewn patches. Even though I'm a werewolf, I can still feel the cold while my whole body trembles from the chilled air.
I sleep three or four hours in parallel. Not resting for too long in one spot because I never know who is around or whether I’m being hunted. Despite only being 21 years old, I already know to be careful. Remaining alone so it's less riskier as I roam. I always sleep with my knife in one of my hands, never knowing when someone may jump out on me.
I look around and see the coast is clear, no one within sight. I pack my bag and away my sleeping bag. I take a sip of water from my flask and slowly climb down the tree. I take one last look around, making sure everything is clear. I start to walk just forward. Some hours later it starts to rain heavily so I take out my waterproof jacket. I put on my hoodie and start to walk again.
I walk through the thickish forest. My shoes soaking wet from the rain and the ground begins to swamp. My clothes drip wet from the rain and feel heavy on my body, weighing me down. The wind starts to blow and I pull clutch my jacket closed. My wolf curling up inside my head as the cold affects her too. The water leaks into my boots causing my socks to grow wet. Every step I take grows harder, feeling bitter from the ice like water.
I look around to find a place where I can hide from the heavy rain. I can't see anything so I walk I continue to walk in the same direction. After what felt like an eternity, I can see a form through my watery eyes. Uncertain of what it is, I cautiously approach it. Sniffing the air to check if any danger can be sensed here to which I’m met with nothing more than the earthy aroma of the forestry. I walk straight towards the silhouette. As I grow closer, I can see the mysterious shadow is just a building. An abandoned building, sparking my concern as I question what dangers hide behind its wall.
Despite my fear, I can’t help but feel excited. Buildings meant civilization, houses meant wolves or humans. Honestly, I’m not sure which is the worst. I feel wishful, hoping that it’s empty and with no danger lurking within there. I still assess the possibilities when I step closer, hiding behind every tree trunk as I sneak forwards. The closer I get, the more I can see as I glance over the broken windows and missing door.
The house is wrapped heavily with clambering plants and winding vines, old and dirty for years of lack of use. I feel hopeful as I approach with caution, liking the chances that no one else would dare to stay here. I sniff the air once more, trying to catch whiff of any unfamiliar scents. Feeling frustrated, I give up. Struggling to take in anything other than the damp earth as the rain washes away any other scent. Biting the bullet, I decide I’ll have to investigate blindly.
I choose a broken window on the left hand side of the building to enter, disclosed as a gathering of where a tree’s barricade it from plain view offering me cover. I tell my wolf my plan and order her to be on high-alert. She slowly bows as her ears perk up while raising her wet nose into the air.
I poke my head through the window and carefully look inside. When I don't see anyone within the room, I slowly crawl through the jagged opening. When I landed on the floor I study the interior, notching this is an old bedroom of some sorts.
A broken metal bed remains strewn on the floor as the nightstands crumble at its sides. I listen again every, searching for any form of noise that can mean danger, but luckily I don't hear anything more than my own raspy breathing. I walk throughout the room, heading towards a rotting door leading to the unknown. The exit leads to a bathroom before connecting to the rest of the house while I follow the maze-like layout. I carefully creep around, exploring the house in silence as I inspect every room thankfully finding no-one in my search.
With the undisturbed dust still decorating the furniture, I let out a sigh of relief. Thankful for a place of sanctuary for the night so I can so finally get an overdue rest under a roof. I happily decide to stay here for tonight, removing my hoodie and my jacket and placing them on a makeshift hand from a forgotten nail in the wall allowing them to dry. I looks around content, certain I made a good choice as I notice the rain outside growing heavier by the minute. I shut the bedroom door and gather some wooden sticks from the smashed shattered nightstands. I use my firestone to spark the wood, creating a small fire to warm my body and hanging clothes.
Out of habit, I thread a tin above the door attached with rope. Taking precautions in case someone happens to come inside, warning me like a bell made specifically for incoming danger. I take out some dry clothes from a resealable plastic bag, still dry and usable as they remain safe from the heavy downpour outside. I quickly get dressed, changing into a fresh t-shirt and a pair sweat pants before snuggling down inside my sleeping bag. I use one hand as a pillow and clasp the other around the handle of my knife. Wishing I wont need to use it.
I wake up and the sun is shining on my face. Feeling panicked as I’d somehow managed to sleep longer than I had wanted to. I immediately jump to my feet, almost stumbling as I steady myself before gathering my now dry clothes. I put all my belongings into my backpack and gather my sleeping bag also. Securing my bag on my back tightly as it holds all of my possessions.
I quickly use the toilet despite it’s lack of function. Using the pool of fresh water sat in the sink, collected from the hole in the roof sat above. I wash my face a little, embracing the cool water as the refreshing liquid drips down. I still feel fatigued, my body crying out as it begs for more sleep but to my despite, that’s not gonna happen. I've already been here longer than I wanted to be... I gotta get going.
With no time to lose, I leave the house through the same way I had entered yesterday. Embracing the warm sun as it beams down brightly as I step outside. After beginning my journey, I notice my stomach growl every now and again, growing louder the further I venture. I think back to my last meal, recalling it was far too long ago. I try to hold back from shifting into my wolf form, knowing all to well it will give off my scent more than what it does in my human form. In replacement of meat, I forage berries and nut’s.
I catch the scent of a few animals in the distance, my hearing picking out the gentle flow of water crashing into the air. I quickly rush over, filling my flask with water before stripping out of my dirty clothes and washing them in the collection of clear water before hanging them on a neighbouring tree. My wolf is excited because she finally can come out. I shift immediately in my silver wolf form and land on four paws. My wolf starts to chase her tail like a big puppy, feeling happy to feel the air in her own fur. I lower my snout to the ground and sniff deeply, enthusiastically catching the scent of a rabbit that was here not too long ago. As my mouth salivates, I follow the smell and start to follow my prey's scent, eager to get my claws into a nice big meal.
