The Alû was taking its sweet time with Markus. It was a few minutes before it called for the Nahual and we saw as it came through the window. I needed him to get a little closer and step over the ash circle we had made on the floor. He was two steps away. “Come on, take another step you, asshole,” I heard Gonzalo whisper. When he finally took the next step into the ash circle, I breathed a sigh of relief.
