CHAPTER FIVE When Remi thought of small-town America, she pictured a place like Ashland, Virginia. As they pulled off the highway and onto the four-lane road passing through town, a sign adorned with an American flag announced that the town had a population of “8,031 and counting!” Apparently, this vast metropolis was experiencing a growth spurt. Modest two-story homes with luxuriant lawns flanked the road, interspersed with patches of thick forest. Remi opened the window and let the warm air and rich smell of foliage wash over her.
