The bells of St. Margaret’s, which pealed every half an hour from midnight until dawn, were drowned by the boom of the cannons firing across the river and rockets exploding into the sky. When the King appeared in his robes wearing a brown wig, its thick curls falling over his forehead and the nape of his neck, he looked as the Earl had expected, extremely impressive.
