Jake had stopped taking the painkillers the day he left the hospital, which meant that by nighttime his arm was throbbing. They checked into a hotel, and he went right to one of the double beds and lay down. Sometimes shut-eye was the only thing that decreased the pain.
Why didn’t he just take the damn pills? They definitely worked, but they also made his head feel like it was stuffed with wool. And with Olivia around, he needed to be on his game. She was sacrificing her time to take care of him. The least he could do was not conk out on her.
Olivia went to the bathroom to take a shower. He drifted into a half-doze, happy that lying flat on his back seemed to give his arm some relief. A pleasant sense of well-being crept over him as the ache lessened. He’d be okay. He’d heal up fast.
