They both sat in silence for a moment, letting that terrible possibility sink in. All Jake could think about was Gracie. She’d already lost one mother. How awful if she lost another, even before getting to know her. And how much worse if her search for Laine ended up getting the star killed?
“We have to find Laine,” he finally said. “I can’t let Gracie lose another mother. We have to warn her and make sure she’s safe.”
“I don’t think looking for her is the best way to keep her safe.” Olivia looked just as shaken as he felt. “They might decide to follow us if they think we’re getting close to something.”
“Maybe that’s a good thing.” He drummed his fingers on the table, tapping out a rhythm that always helped him think. “That would prove we’re on the right track.”
