Chapter 11 Once home, I head straight to my room. I want privacy. No need for my mother to hear my conversations with Denise. In fact, my life isn’t her concern. She doesn’t seem to care all that much, anyway. I may not be the greatest student or most amazing person in the entire universe, but you’d think she’d be interested that her daughter—someone who possibly qualifies as the single most socially backward kid on the planet—has made a few friends since arriving in this dinky little town. I start to punch Denise’s number into my cell, but I don’t know it. Duh! What a doofus I am. I head downstairs where my parents are watching TV. For a change, my dad is home. We are almost like a normal family—whatever that means. As I approach the living room, I hear my parents whispering. I creep
