Evania Santoz POV
"Mamma, I am ready. Hurry up, let’s go. Aunt Isabella will be waiting for us."
I turned back to look at my little cute boyfriend. My 5-year-old son was looking so handsome in his casual outfit that I could swear nobody can pass by without looking at him. I couldn't take my eyes off my son.
“Mummy, stop admiring me. I know I am handsome. If you act like this, then what can I do about the hotties out there.” Jack pulled back me from my thoughts. I quickly put on my boots and turned back to Jack.
“Come baby let’s go.” Jack went all red on hearing this.
“Don’t call me baby.” He yelled at me.
I laughed as I know well that Jack hates being called a baby. I pecked on his forehead and said “sorry sweetheart”
I took the keys to my apartment and car and left with Jack. We got into the car and slowly accelerated towards the hospital.
“Mummy, speed up, we are already late. We also have to pick up Aunt Isabella.” Jack said in an exciting tone.
I know that he is excited as he will get his cardiology results today and his surgery will be done soon so that he can also go to school and play like other kids. I had taken a day off as I have an appointment with the cardiologist for Jack.
It’s been five years since I had become a regular visitor of a cardiologist. I regret the single mistake made 6 years back which caused my son to go through such pain. I would do anything possible for my son to live a normal life. Jack had a weak heart by birth but it was not possible to perform surgery at such a tender age. So he was living on medicines since his birth. I know he is excited as he can escape from his greatest enemy 'medicines' as he says after surgery. He is not at all afraid of surgery and waits for the day as he waits for Christmas.
“Mummy, stop. You have left Aunt Isabella behind” Jack pushes me back from my thoughts.
“Hey handsome good morning” Isabella wishes Jack through her half breadth as she was half running to the car as I have stopped it far ahead of her.
“Good morning Bella” I greeted her, looking sorry as I made her half run.
“Morning Eva,” she said heavily breathing.
Isabella is my only friend here in Texas. I have no one to rely on other than Bella. She had always stood by my side whenever I needed support. In the last 5 years, I nearly lost Jack twice and Bella was there for me. Jack loves her company.
I first met Bella when I came here to Texas and joined Lakeshore hospital as a gynecologist. Bella was my first nursing assistant when I joined the hospital. Within a short period, she became not just my friend but more than a family. She was the one who stood by my side at the time of my delivery. She is actually Jack’s Godmother. Bella is the only person who knows everything about me and Jack, even more than my own parents and siblings. Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t hear what Jack and Bella were talking about. I came back to reality when Bella shook my shoulder.
“Eva, where are you lost? Did you hear anything we have said?” I looked at her apologetically.
“Mummy, we will have a pizza party tonight. It’s my treat.” Jack said and I looked at him surprised.
“I have saved for the day in my piggy bank. Today is the biggest day of my life. I am so excited. Finally, I will be free to do anything.” My 5-year-old son is so optimistic about meeting his doctor while I am tensed as hell about the results. If the results are not in favor of Jack, then how will I face him? Bella held my hand as if she read my mind. She tried to console me silently and it always works. I should be positive and hope for the best. I dropped Bella at Lakeshore hospital.
“Don’t worry, everything will be fine. Call me as soon as you get the result.” She said before getting out of the car. She came to the passenger side and gave a kiss on Jack’s forehead.
“All the best, my little hero. Will meet you tonight.”
I sped the car to our destination, Genesis med city, which is the best cardio hospital in Texas. It took us 20 minutes drive to get there. I parked the car in the visitor's parking and took the elevator to the fourth floor. I have got the appointment for 10’O clock and there is still 40 minutes for that. So, we went straight to the small café on the floor and ordered a coffee for me and a doughnut for Jack. I am not a coffee person, but I have it when I get tensed.
“Why are you so tensed mummy? Be positive and relax. Everything is going to be super great.” Jack said as he knows that I only drink coffee when I am tensed. Hearing his words, I smiled at him.
“I am fine, dear. It’s just that I am anxious than any other day and I am not able to control it. Enjoy your doughnut sweetheart.” I said and sipped my coffee.
After paying for the coffee and doughnut I walked to the doctor’s room with a throbbing heart. I could feel the sweat under my feet. I looked at my hands which has become icy cold. I looked at Jack who is walking as if he is at some park enjoying the views. I wish if I could also be as cool as him. He reminds me of his father through his every action. His father was also cool like him. We would have been together if I did had shown some courage at that time. We would have been a happy family if it was not for my cowardice. The situation would have been different if Jack had his father. He would never have to go through the pain if we were a family.
I knocked at the door with my shaky hands and waited for the response. A nurse came and asked to wait in the visitor's lounge. I walked to the empty chairs with jack and waited for our turn. With each second my heartbeat increased.
“Mummy, don’t worry. Everything will be alright.” Jack smiled at me which eased my tension. It took ten minutes when a nurse finally came and called us.
“Jack Santoz, Dr. Hershman is waiting for you.”
I held Jack’s hand and walked towards the door and entered after knocking. I never thought after entering the room, my entire world is going to be upside down. I never had the slightest idea that I will be forced to go back to my past to save my son.
