Chapter 7 – The Hidden Truth

1734 Words
“Why don’t you call your brother Edwin?” Dr. Moore’s words startled me. “Dr. Moore, that’s fine I will a way out to solve the problem. You don’t worry.” I didn’t want to continue the talk. “My child you don’t understand what I want to say. First, hear me out and then make a decision.” Dr. Moore said and I waited for her to continue. “Do you know how I know your brother? Have you ever told me about him?” She asked. She is right. I have never told about my family Dr. Moore. When I went to Dr. Moore and stayed with her, I seldom talked about my family. I tried my best to not think about them and therefore I never talked about them. Dr. Moore too never asked me anything about my family or about Jack’s father. When I had never mentioned Edwin to Dr. Moore, then how does she know him? “How do you know Edwin, Dr. Moore?” I asked anxiously. Bella sat in front of me silently paying attention to all my words. “Edwin called me for the first time on the night you left your home. Did you ever wonder how I called you exactly at the same time when you left your home? It’s because of your brother. He was always there for you but you never knew because he didn’t want you to know that.” Dr. Moore’s words made me numb for few moments. “Eva, on that night Edwin called me and explained everything that happened at your home. He said that you were not ready to take his help in any way. So he wanted me to help you without your knowledge. He did know that you had nowhere to go and you will be stuck. As soon as you left your home he again and called me and asked me to offer you help. He was always behind you protecting you without your knowledge.” Dr. Moore stopped for few seconds. “That cottage where you lived was arranged by Edwin. Edwin wanted you to be safe and he knew that you will not be able to live in New York freely. He used his influence to find the best hospital where you could work without being recognized. It’s true that I recommended you to the hospital but it was chosen for you by your brother. The money I gave you was not mine instead Edwin said that it’s your money which you have full right on. I was just a mediator who worked in between a brother and a sister.” Tears started to fall down my cheeks hearing Dr. Moore’s words. I was not able to utter a word back. “Eva, you are really lucky to get a brother like Edwin. He always kept in touch with me only to know about you and your son. He is a regular visitor of the orphanage and donates a big amount each month to the orphanage. He not only helps us financially but also comes here in person and spends time with the children and old people here. He is definitely a man with a golden heart.” Edwin really surprised me this time. I never knew that my brother would go to such an extent to help me. He didn’t even care that if dad found out that he helped me, he would also be abandoned by the family. “Eva, Edwin knows about Jack and his condition and he is really worried. Do you remember that once I asked you to mail me Jack’s reports? Edwin wanted to see them. After seeing the reports, he wanted to help you personally. He has been calling me constantly in the last three days to know about your decision. He knows that your father has accepted Jack’s case without knowing about his whereabouts. I know that Edwin has made your father consider Jack’s case. He wants to be there with you not hidden but in the forefront. But he will never call you because of your father’s words. He is waiting for your call from the day you left that house. He is your savior Eva. Call him before it gets late. He will be delighted to talk to you.” I didn’t reply as I couldn’t find any word. I am right now speechless and to an extend emotionally paralyzed. “Eva, I will mail you Edwin’s contact details. It’s up to you whether you want to call him or not. Take care of yourself and Jack.” Dr. Teresa said and hung up the phone. I sat in that position as if frozen to my seat. I wanted to take the phone away from my ears but I couldn’t. I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. “Eva, what happened? What did Dr. Moore say? Why do you look shocked?” Bella shook me hard coming to my side. The phone fell from my hand but Bella caught it in time. She gave me a glass of water. I drank as if I have been thirsty for days. It took me several minutes to become normal. Bella waited patiently till I relaxed. “Bella, Dr. Moore revealed the hidden truth of my six years of struggle. It’s not her who supported me to be on my legs.” I said and Bella looked at me puzzled. “Edwin backed me without my knowledge. He helped me by making Dr. Moore a shield. He knew that I would never accept his help. He was always behind me as my shadow. He was there from the moment I left that house. He had sent me here to Texas so as to be away from my dad and have a happy life. I always thought that Edwin believed that I am with Jack’s father. I can’t tell you, Bella, how happy I am right now. I was never alone. There was a guardian for me, a hidden guardian. He guided me throughout these years and I never knew. I promised him that I will call him when I need him and he always waited for my call. But I never did. How will I face him, Bella? He was always there as a brother but I never became his sister.” I silently cried hiding my face in my hands. I continued weeping and Bella allowed me to relax by myself. “Eva, I am so happy for you. You and Jack have a family but you never knew. Edwin really is a man with a golden heart. I think you should call him right now. You have already made him wait for long. Do you have his contact number?” Bella asked. “Dr. Moore said that she will mail me his contact details. I will just check my mail.” I quickly opened my mailbox and there at the top is a mail from Dr. Moore. I quickly opened it and copied Edwin’s contact information to my phone. I looked at the phone number and Edwin had not yet changed his number in these six years. He would have been waiting for my call as he never changed his number. I took that number on my dial pad but then hesitated to make the call. “Eva, why are you not dialing his number?” Bella asked. “Bella, what will I say to him? What if he asked why I didn’t call him in these six years when I needed him? I am scared, Bella. I can’t answer his questions.” I said. “Eva, he will not ask you anything. He was waiting for your call not because he didn’t know where you were but to just keep up your father’s words. He knows you better than anyone else and that’s why he planned everything according to your wellbeing. Call him right now Eva, if you don’t then you are doing injustice to your brother. Give him his happiness Eva. He deserves it.” Bella encouraged me. I took my phone and dialed the number with shivering hands. I brought the phone to my ear and waited for the phone to ring with a throbbing heart. But it went engaged and I got disappointed. I cut the line and looked at Bella and said. “Bella, the phone is not ringing, it’s engaged.” “So what Eva, try again. Someone might be calling him at the time you rang. Calm down and dial the number again.” She said. I took the number again and dialed it and this time I could hear the ringing. I waited for my beloved brother to answer the call. The phone rang for some time and no one answered. I was about to hang up when someone answered the call. “Hello, Dr. Edward Raymond here.” My breath caught in my throat. Bella asked me what happened and I mouthed to her that it’s my father. She took the phone from me and talked on the phone. “Hello, may I speak to Dr. Edwin Raymond? I thought that this is his number.” Bella went silent for some time and then replied. “Actually I am an old friend of his. I have been away from New York for so long. Now I am returning back and so I just tried to call my old friends there in New York.” Again she went silent. After few more seconds, she said goodbye and hung up the phone. I looked at her eagerly as to know what my father said. “Don’t worry, Edwin is right now doing surgery and so your father answered the call instead. I think this is his official number now. He said that he will inform Edwin and tell him to call you back.” A sigh of relief left me.
