Camelia walked into the conference room on Monday morning at eleven-thirty, followed by the two senior partners and Bill Finnigan, managing partner of the firm. They stood behind the podium while the junior partners, managers, and the rest of the staff settled into their seats. I sat at the back near the door since I was barely awake and coffee hadn’t revived me yet. “Good morning, team,” Bill said. “This will be brief. We have made our decision regarding the new junior partners. Congratulations to Rashid Simmons and Fiona Wiley!” Everyone applauded and cheered, even Matt, who didn’t seem surprised he hadn’t been chosen. I just sat there in defeat.
