It's been a year since I lost my parents, everything has been going on smoothly. I never thought I would be able to achieve so much after their deaths, I guess my parents saw through me, they saw something I could never see in myself no matter how hard I tried to look for it.
The company has been holding on strong and our network has been rising daily, all the companies left under my care have been doing very well and I can say for sure that I'm proud of myself and how well and strong I was able to handle each situation that came my way.
At age 21, I've become the richest person in the world with many cars, houses, and more companies built under my name.
I knew my relatives thought I wouldn't succeed and I know they all wanted me to fail so they could tell the boards to kick me out but I'm so glad that I disappointed them daily. I wasn't called princess for anything, I was called princess to dominate and rule and that's what I am going to keep doing.
The buzzing sound of the alarm clock jolted me up from my sleep. I got up from my bed to see my secretary Miss Karen Lee, a Korean lady staring at me with a smile on her face.
“Good morning Ma'am.” She greeted me as she walked over to my side.
“Good morning Karen, when did you arrive?” I asked her as I sat up and checked the time, it was 6:30am.
I love how hardworking she is but I hate the fact that she's overstressing herself just for my sake. I want her to be happy and live her life. She is just 25 and she is meant to be having fun like women her age, not stuck beside me tending to me every day. I felt it was a huge burden to her.
“I got here at exactly 6am, I brought the clothes you will be wearing and I told the maid to get the dress ironed. Oh, here they are!" she exclaimed, as the maid came in with the clothes I was going to wear today.
They both greeted me before leaving for their various duties.
“Karen, you know I can manage what to wear, you don't have to come here early in the morning to get me what to wear. Live your life and I'll see you at the office." I said, finally getting up from the bed.
“I'm your secretary ma'am and I am here to serve you.”
“You are not my slave Miss Karen, but thanks anyway. I will go take my bath now.” I said.
I hated this, if my parents were alive I wouldn't have to run the companies or have someone at my beck and call. I would have been going on fancy dates, clubbing with friends, and going to the karaoke that I always loved to go to.
Too bad this circumstance happened to me and I have to become an adult, sacrificing my youth to prevent my parent's hard work from going down the drain.
I turned on the shower, as the warm water flow down on my skin, I thought about girls my age and what they will be doing by this time on a Friday morning.
Some will still be in bed, while others will be with their boyfriends making out and having a swirling time. I don't even know what having a boyfriend feels like. Even though I came from a rich family, I didn't want to bring the image and reputation of my family down to the mud.
I always thought when I get to 20, I will go on my first date, have my first kiss and have s*x with the guy that makes my heartbeat and makes the butterflies in my stomach flutter.
'Hahaha, what a lame life everything turned out to be.' I said to myself. Turning off the shower I went back to my changing room, putting on the clothes that were brought in by the maid.
A black gown and a white jacket, wearing a white shoe to match, a white handbag and a pair of shades. Karen helped me in knotting my hair in a bun, I applied a little makeup on and we were off to the office.
“What are my schedules today like?” I asked her. Sitting at the back of the car and she sat beside me.
“You have a 9am meeting today with the board of directors, 11am breakfast with Mr. Audrey, for the paintings we need to show up in the art gallery, you know the museum will be open week time." Karen read out my today's to-do list.
“Yeah that's true, do we have another way to cut Mr. Audrey off first, like postpone my meeting with him?" I asked.
I just acquired a new building recently and I decided to turn it into an art gallery. Many people told me I was making a huge mistake and wasting my parent's money, but I saw something good in it.
My dad wanted to do this when he was alive but unfortunately, he never lived long enough to see that dream come through. So I've decided to make it come true for him and I won't rest until it's accomplished.
“Sorry ma'am but you can't, we need everything in order before the grand night," Karen said breaking the disappointing news to me.
“Fine, what else do I have scheduled for me today?”
She cleared her throat before continuing with the long list, it was indeed going to be a long day for me and it looked exhausting already before it began.
“Wow, well let's get to business," I grumbled loudly the moment the car halted in front of the office building.
The moment I stepped out of the car everyone's heads were already bowing down when I walked by and it made me feel like a grown-up when I'm still very young.
Do I hate this feeling? Hell yes. Do I want to give it up? Probably.
Like every day my business schedules increased and I didn't have time to rest. When it was exactly 4pm I heard Karen arguing with someone
"Excuse me ma, I can't allow you in, Ms. Avery doesn't accept anyone without an appointment.” I heard Miss Karen talking to the person with as polite a voice as she could.
“Why can't I enter the office? I am her aunt, this company is hers and mine also. We built it with our blood, sweat, and tears before she was born. Unfortunately, everything has to be willed to her even when she doesn't deserve it.”
“Your blood, sweat, and tears weren't dropped on this company, my parents toiled night and day, eating one square meal a day just to see their dreams coming through, you have no right to claim what you never contributed for," I yelled at her. “And you have no rights to barge into my company like that and ask for my audience without booking an appointment.”
“I am your family.” Aunt Theresa said
“That's the only reason I'm not kicking you out, follow me,” I ordered her, leading the way to my office. “Why are you here, aunt Theresa, it's been a long time since I last saw you.”
“I came on behalf of the family, we are worried about you,” she said sitting on the chair opposite mine.
“Worried about me, but why?” I asked.
“We heard you acquired a new building that you want to turn into an art gallery, don't you think that it's too much? You're still young and you know nothing about business and all this. You are just hell-bent on wasting your parent's money. I advise you to step down and... And..."
“And what aunt Theresa, go on finish your statement, I am beginning to enjoy where it is leading to,” I said.
“Very well, then, I'll advise you to step down and do things kids your mates love doing and allow the adults take over.”
“What do kids my age love doing?”
“You know, going clubbing, partying, and having fun with their boyfriends. You do want a boyfriend don't you?” she asked, adjusting well on her seat.
“Hahahaha, now listen aunt Theresa, you can tell them exactly what I am telling you. I am Camilla Avery and not other kids. I am the CEO of my father's businesses and I have been doing perfectly well running the businesses ever since my parents died. No one has ever heard of the companies going bankrupt and it will never happen, not when I'm alive. So thanks for your concern, I'm very much healthy and capable of running the business and building it to greater heights.”
“You little child, what do you know about business, just because the board of directors didn't tell you doesn't mean the companies are doing okay. There are words on the streets.” She mouthed the last words.
“Well, the words on the streets haven't gotten to my ears yet. Yes I trust my boards of directors, when there are issues they will tell me and I will make sure I get down to the issues. Even if it's the last thing I can do. So please aunt Theresa I have an appointment to attend to for now. If you don't have anything useful to say to me then you can take your leave by using the door.” I said straight up pointing to the door for her to leave.
I was holding my nerves not to raise my voice or get angry. She's an elderly woman and my parents raised me properly to respect my elders. I was trying everything I could right now not to lose it and ruin my home training.
“Are you walking me out of your office?” she asked, with anger in her tone as she spoke to me.
“No, I'm not, who am I to walk my aunt out? I just said I have an appointment right now and I don't want to be late. You know very well that the art gallery is opening soon. Oh, and aunt Theresa you all are invited to join me in opening it, after all, it's a family business.” I smiled at her.
Just then Miss Karen walked up to me and whispered something in my ear. I could see aunt Theresa was anxious to know what she said to me.
“Well, I am sorry aunt Theresa, my next guest has arrived. I hope to see you at the art gallery event, the dress code is white.”
I called after her as she grudgingly walked out of the office murmuring as she left. I saw Lincoln walking in all dressed in a suit, I smiled at him as my heart beat rapidly.
Lincoln has always been my crush and the one I loved right from the day I saw him at our fresher's party, I didn't get the chance to tell him how I felt because then he was dating someone. I thought soon the feelings would fade away but seeing him right now ignited the love once again and I couldn't help but feel all embarrassed.
“Lincoln, nice to meet you finally after so many months,” I said, exchanging handshakes with him.
“Same here, you have been so busy that we couldn't get to see you. By the way, what did you tell your aunt that got her pissed like that? I swear she was shooting daggers at me with her eyes." He said with his deep husky voice that has always been my weakness.
“Same old, same old.”
“They still want you to step down and allow them to rule the company?” He asked and I nodded. “You really have a lot cut out for you, don't you?”
“Yeah I do, forget about me and my messed up life, what brings you here?” I asked.
“I was in the neighborhood and I decided to come say hi to a friend that abandoned me." He teased.
“You know I didn't and I will never do that. Are you and Rachel still dating, she is the only one living in this neighborhood that I know off."
“We are old news.” He said dropping the bombshell on me.
I didn't know if I should be happy or not, but f**k that hell yeah I was so freaking happy, maybe after all these years, I can finally have a chance with him.
“Oh my, what happened? You guys were so good together, you guys even won the best couple awards." I asked, pretending to care
“She cheated on me with Blake.” He said and I gasped.
“Wait a minute, you mean Blake, like Blake our friend?" I asked and he nodded. “Hell no, that can't be true."
“Well it is, they said or rather she said something about me being busy with work and Blake was always there for her, counseling her. One thing led to another, they found out that they were in love. So there goes my heart breaking into shreds and being destroyed by them.” He said and I could feel the hurt in his voice and his eyes
“I am sorry about that.” I apologized like it was my fault.
“It's been over three months now and I'm gradually getting over it.”
“So tell me what were you doing in my vicinity then, a new catch?”
“Nah I am done chasing women, I came for a business and decided I should check up on you during the free time I have. When are you rounding off work?”
“8pm, why do you ask?”
“Let's go out for dinner and let's catch up, for old time's sake, I close at 8 too.”
“Is it a date?” I asked, pulling his legs.
“Call it what you want and I will play along, so wait for me when you are done. See you later, love.” Lincoln said as he walked out of the office.
I know I shouldn't be excited but I was, I was glad he wasn't seeing anyone, this news kind of brightened my mood, I should try hitting on him. And maybe, just maybe one day he would say he has feelings for me too and I will finally break the curse of not knowing what a kiss, relationship, and s*x feels like. Maybe one day.
