Chapter 5:
Helena ventured belowdecks while the crew finished disembarking. Fear of breaking down while they straggled out of sight kept her there. She didn’t want to show weakness and indecision at her choice to continue. There might be a time when that appearance of control might prove useful.
She convinced herself Bessie needed cleaning, but no matter how hard she worked on the vehicle, that missing shine wouldn’t return. The solitude and repetition of movement eased her mind some. It gave her something to concentrate on rather than scream. Working on Bessie, she felt closer to Lane than she had in a long time. She was almost tempted to reach out with her mind in an attempt to contact him… almost.
“How long are you going to stay down here?” Phoebe’s voice broke the isolation of Helen
