Chapter 9

1842 Words
Liam's POV I was so devastated right now to the point that I wanted to kill someone after I received the news from Luis that my wife was still with his lover again. I don't care where the hell she is or who's with her! All I care about is Mikayla. Helena promised her that she would attend her recital performance, but she didn’t show up. Mikayla was so upset but she just hid it. She knows her mom very well. And Helena doesn’t have a little bit of affection for her. But Mikayla still yearned for her mother’s love. I shouldn’t trust Helena that much to make a promise to Mikayla. That’s why I can’t contain my anger right now. She chose to spend her time with a man rather than spending time with her daughter even just a day. I don't want Mikayla to hear rumors about her mother's affair. Since Helena and I got married, I've been trying to make my life private, though I am a very well-known businessman. There was a time when the paparazzi photographed her with a man going out to a hotel, and I had to take it down immediately and paid a lot of money just to shut it. Dammit! I don’t care if she ruined my reputation. All that matters to me is Mikayla’s well-being. If rumors spread about her mom, it could affect her, especially at school. I called Luis. "Mr. Evans." "Luis, find her. " I ordered him with gritted teeth. "Yes, sir. " I hung up the phone and massaged my forehead; I was experiencing a headache again. How could Helena be so selfish? How could she say she was in love at that moment? I cracked a laugh. She is incapable of loving someone because if she did, she must love her daughter first. Fuck! I get up from my chair and glance out the window wall; the scenery is quite nice. I can see a wonderful view from my office. I cannot understand why my life has turned out this way. My jaw clenched as I remembered Helena barging into my office. "I'm pregnant, Liam!" Helena declared. She is the only daughter of my father's best friend. "What the hell?!" I was shocked by her outburst. "Yes, it is hell darling,” she said smiling, and put the pregnancy test on my office table. I was speechless for a moment while staring at the pregnancy test on the table. There were two red lines. "So, what's the plan?" she asked while playing with her painted fingernails as if her pregnancy wasn’t a big deal. How could she? "What are you talking about?" I asked her dumbfounded. I'm trying to control my anger or else I'm going to strangle her neck right now. "I'm talking to this baby." She pointed her point finger to her tummy. "It's just a one-night stand Helena and you know it, I don't do commitments," I said lazily. I can't believe this woman! I can't believe that all the women I hooked up with, she’s the only one I got pregnant. Sleeping with her was just a big mistake. She shrugged her shoulder and said, "Me, too. " "This is impossible!" I exclaimed fiercely. My father would kill me if I knocked up his best friend’s daughter without taking responsibility for it. "Are you sure it is mine?" I inquired in a serious tone; she appeared unaffected, as if the words were exactly what she expected to hear. "Yes, but if you want to get rid of it, it's fine with me." She never shows emotion nor does she care. I know what kind of woman she is, so cunning and liberated. "How dare you to kill my child!" I'm beyond angry right now, I want to choke her neck until she can't breathe. I know she's a brat, and what she wants, she gets. She's very beautiful and sexy but I'm not attracted to her, it's just that night that we bumped each other in the bar, we got drunk and the rest was history. That was the biggest mistake I've made in my life. "I don't want to raise a child without a father, Liam," she told me without any hint of sincerity. "I'll think about it, Helena. Right now, I can't tell you what to do, and please don't do stupid things that will harm the baby." In the end, I was defeated because I couldn't think straight. It feels like a massive bomb dropped in front of me. "Okay, just call me. Don't make me wait." She smiled seductively and winked at me before she left. The nerve of this woman! I was enraged. I hate her! She made me a fool. Damn her! I don't want to turn into an abusive husband but right now I want to. Wait until I find you again, Helena. I’ll make sure you will pay the price for breaking your promise to Mikayla. That was the first time I saw Mikayla’s happy face, her happiness that time was different; a kind of happiness that I can’t give her. “Please, Mommy. Please attend my recital performance, I promise I’ll do my best.” Mikayla sounds hopeful. Her hands were clasped in front of her chest as if she was praying. The irritation of Helena’s face was visible. She can’t even hide it even in front of her daughter—that made me hate her more. She looked at me with blank expression and I stared at her with disgust. We stared at each other for a minute before she gave a sneaky smile. And then, her gaze dropped to Mikayla. “Okay, sweety, I will attend your recital performance.” Mikayla gasped in surprise, and her eyes shone brightly with happiness. This is the first time she acted nicely to Mikayla even though it was just for show. “Promise, Mommy?” She smiled nicely, but I knew it was only a pretense, since she could not wait to leave the house. She could not endure talking to Mikayla for a single second. She despised speaking to her or even looking at her. Helena caressed Mikayla’s hair gently. “I promise, sweety. So. Be a good girl and wait for me patiently, okay?” I scoffed in disbelief. If I had not known her, I would have fallen for her dramatic behavior right now. I was interrupted in my deep thoughts when I heard a faint knock on the door. "Excuse me, Mr. Evans, the investors are waiting." Candice, my secretary reminds me of my meeting with the investors. "Just give me a minute.” I inhaled and exhaled to calm myself. "Okay, sir" After three hours, the meeting was done. I went directly to my office. Before I could sit in my chair, my private phone rang. I answered the call immediately because I knew it was Luis. "Sir, I found her, and she is currently staying at the Venus Hotel with her lover." "Good.” My fists clenched tightly. "What do you want me to do, sir?" "Let her be, Luis. I'll handle her," I said and hung up the phone. She's getting on my nerves. I touch the temple of my forehead and massage it gently. My headache is getting worse. "Sir, do you want something?" It was Candice. I looked at her and I saw her worried face. She's pretty and young and a very efficient secretary. I can trust her and rely on her concerning my work. She has been with me for almost six years and remains incredibly loyal and dedicated to her job. I know she has feelings for me, but I do not mix business and pleasure, and I value her so much that I do not want to have an affair with her. Or is it just that I don’t want to? "Would you want some water, tea, or coffee?" Her lovely voice echoed throughout the office. "Just a glass of water, Candice. Thank you." I respectfully replied. She smiled as she went outside to get water for me. I am not sure how long I was zoning out because the next thing I knew, Candice appeared in front of me, holding a glass of water. "Are you thinking about your wife again?" she inquired, placing a glass of water on my table. She is aware that my wife and I are not on good terms. "It is nothing I cannot handle," I responded calmly. I heard her sigh. "Why don’t you divorce her? You seem unhappy with her, and there are so many women out there whom you deserve." Like you? I smiled at her. She told me about the divorce several times, but I cannot divorce Helena; I can never give her the satisfaction of being free and living her life as if nothing happened. My jaw clenched as I remembered what she had done to me; he had made me a fool of myself! "I will never divorce her," I declared, my voice was firm. I saw the pain in Candice's eyes, but she handled it well. She gave me a strained smile. "You love her, don't you?" she questioned, the pain in her voice was noticeable. "It does not matter, Candice," I said faintly. She opened her mouth to say something, and I waited for her response but nothing came out of her mouth. Instead, she nodded her head before she left the office without any words. I know she was hurt. And I can’t do anything about it. When I got home, I was surprised to see my wife standing in the living room, it seemed that she was lost in her thoughts. I can’t remember when was the last time I saw her. "So, you're home," I said coldly, interrupting her deep thought. She turned her back to me and I saw the shock in her eyes when she saw me. She seems different right now and I can’t stop my eyes from checking her body. “And… you gained weight.” "Y-yes?" she stuttered and her eyebrows furrowed. She looked confused but she couldn't fool me anymore with her innocent look. "Oh, yes. I must say welcome home, my dear wife,” I said with my sarcastic tone of voice. I stepped forward but my step faltered when I saw her shocked reaction, and then she stepped backward. "I-I didn't know that she had a husband–I mean..." I was confused about her stuttering scheme, and she was mumbling to herself that her words hardly reached my ears. I smirked at her and moved my feet forward. "I thought you spent more time with your lover. But it’s good that you’re home now because if you hadn’t come home, I will drag you myself out of that damn hotel.” I gritted my teeth. "L-lover?" she uttered the word innocently. She may look different right now but she's still the cunning Helena I knew. ***
