Chapter 5

2071 Words
Vinoth was devastated. It seemed like his world had turned upside within a matter of minutes. His family was such chaos to watch. People were barking at each other. His brother who'd never raised his voice at anyone, looked like he would rip somebody's throat out. And then there was their mother who was sitting in the hall, crying inconsolably with his sister who looked equally upset. This day reminded him of his father's death. In fact, it was, even more, dreadful and unwelcoming than that day. He still couldn't believe the girl he'd thought of protecting from the world could accuse him of s****l harassment. How could she say soothing like that? What made this situation even more despairing was that Anjali was blindly on Anu's side. Of course, she would believe her sister but wasn't Anjali his sister too? He always thought so. He considered her his sister then how could she hurt him like this? She had managed to kill the years-long friendship with her decision to support her sister. The news spread like wildfire in the business circle and as a result, his shares hit rock bottom in the stock market. His partners began to withdraw their partnership from his company over a single night. He didn't care about his business because he was confident enough to rebuild it again however, the fact that his engagement with his beloved woman was called off was setting fire to his existence. "What do you want, Vinoth?" Kaveri's broken voice echoed through the phone line breaking his heart a little more. "Kaveri, sweetheart. Please, you need to believe me. You have known me for so long. Do you think I would do anything like harass a minor girl?" He asked pacing around his room. His heart was beating so rapidly that he could hear it drumming in his ears. "I don't know, Vinoth.." There was silence from the other end as Kaveri took her sweet time to answer him, "Even though I want to believe you, I don't want to risk my life, my career, and my reputation for you. The news about you is doing rounds all around me. Earning a good name is very difficult, Vinoth but ruining it is very easy. I don't want to involve myself with a man who would never be looked upon again. I don't want to be that wife who would always be the center of gossip in social meetings. I hope you understand.." Vinoth didn't know what to say. He felt his life disintegrating into million pieces. He thought Kaveri loved him, she would support him in his most difficult times and be a pillar to him but it was shocking to him to see that all she cared about was her career, reputation, and what people would talk about her in social gatherings. Maybe Kaveri never loved him as much as he did and they are never meant to be together. But Vinoth couldn't accept it. It was very hard to cope with reality. They have been together for almost a year now. They had even taken their relationship to the next level by having made love with each other. Now how could she throw it out as if it was nothing to her? Kaveri has countless times told him how much she loved him and how she would die without him. Were they all simply words that had no true meaning to them? How was he so naive to not have understood that were just some fake words? Of course, hard times reveal true relationships. Kaveri proved it to him. He wanted to hate himself for this condition of his. No one could be blamed for this, except for him. He was f*****g stupid and delusional. There was nothing as such love, friendship, trust, and value. People come and go in our lives whenever they want and nobody can be trusted. Vinoth was so mad at the world around him that he wanted to kill somebody. It would be much better if he killed himself instead. Yes, he wanted to end this life. There was no way the world was ever going to believe his innocence. The pain and humiliation would all end up only with his death. But then he remembered something that he needed to do before taking his own life. Anu. She had literally shattered his life with just her words. She turned out to be a cunning snake he didn't recognize sooner. She shouldn't go unpunished for what she did to him. A dark shadow was cast upon his face when an evil idea crossed his mind. How much ever disturbing the thought was to him, he decided to do it. At least then the name of a harasser that he'd earned would rightfully belong to him. With vengeance, Vitoth made it out of the mansion building. On his way, he spotted the bottles of dark liquid lined on the serving tables which were still not cleared from the lawns. Grabbing one he gulped it down his throat, ignoring the burning sensation as it was nothing compared to the burn in his heart and soul. Throwing it away casually, he marched to the lone collage where Anu lived. He thumped his fist on the door, not bothering that it was past midnight. Not later than a second, he heard shuffling sounds from inside indicating that she wasn't asleep yet. When she opened the door, he found her standing there shocked and scared to see him standing there. Her eyes were bloodshot as if she had been crying endlessly. The thought made Vinoth want to laugh hysterically. Why the hell would she cry after destroying his life? Wouldn't she be celebrating with her sister? "Vinoth?" Her voice trembled as she took a few steps backward. He would never understand why but for the first time it felt satisfying for him to see someone cowering in fear. She should be fearing him after what she did. "W-What are you doi?" He didn't let her finish as he forcefully shoved the door wide open and barged inside, making her chocolate brown orbs go round in fright. "Why are you so shocked to see me?" A sly smile curved upon his lips as he replied sarcastically. "I am here to misbehave with you as I have always been doing.." "Vinoth, you should go.." She tried to push his bulk frame away when he stepped too close to her tiny body. The smell of booze wafted into her nostrils which made her want to puke. "I will go away after I'm done with you.." He pushed her back against the wall harshly making her whimper. Saying that he pulled at her sleeves so roughly that they came off ripped. "No.." Anu began to hyperventilate. With the rage shining so bright in his eyes, he almost resembled a monster to her. And what's more, all his anger was directed at her. Where did this beast come out of Vinoth? Did he always have him inside and she managed to awaken him? Anu screamed when he tore her night dress apart and pushed her further into the wall. Not giving her time, he groped her covered breast and squeezed it hard, making her thrash around even more but he wouldn't stop. He looked like a madman on a mission. A mission to ruin her completely. "Please, Vinoth stop it. I beg you.." "Yes beg.." He groaned and tore off her dress completely. His lips found their way to her neck where he bit her hard channeling all his anger there. Her desperate screams must have woken up everyone in the silence-engulfed mansion as they came dashing into the cottage, the first ones being Anjali and Vikram. Soon the cottage was surrounded by Vaiga, their mother, and all the servants residing there. "Vinoth, what is wrong with you..?" Vikram managed to pull him away from Anu's shaking body by the collar of his shirt. Not once before he thought Vinoth would have done what he was accused of but this scene in front of him made him doubt himself. Did his brother really try to misbehave with this helpless girl? If not, then what the hell as all this? Vinoth did not want to duck his head away when he noticed his brother's hard fist landing on his face. "f*****g asshole!" He yelled in his face, "Did you really do it to her? huh?" For a second, Vinoth's eyes flicked to Vikram's. So after all, even his brother didn't believe him. And the looks on his mother and sister's face wasn't convincing either. They carried the same disappointed expression on them. "I blinded trusted that you would never do such a thing. How stupid was I to not believe my wife?" Vikram continued, breaking his heart further and further. "I will call the police myself and report a case against you. ." He mumbled, fetching out his phone. "You don't deserve to live with us anymore.." They all became so busy calming down the crying Anu that they didn't notice when Vinoth quietly slipped out of the house. Bidding a final goodbye, he disappeared. Even the security guards did not greet him and only threw a nasty look at him when he crossed the main gates. He aimlessly walked the streets of Chennai until he gathered enough courage. When he realized where he was, he was standing on the edge of an unreconstructed floor of a building. From the height of it, he should have been standing on the fifth-sixth floor but there was absolutely no sign of fear in his eyes. He wondered how people committed suicide but now he understood why they did it. It is because their lives become so hard and miserable that death seems easy and welcoming. A few tears escaped his eyes but he didn't try to stop them. Inhaling in deeply, he closed his eyes and leaned forward, surrendering himself to the darkness and silence that followed it. At the mansion, Vikram joined his wife in consoling Anu. He was ashamed of himself for not showing his support to his wife when she needed him the most. How was he going to face her after this? Will she ever depend on him for anything hereafter? The thought was killing him slowly. He kept glancing at her way but Anjali didn't seem to notice it or maybe she did and just didn't want to look at him. Even his mother and sister were standing there showing their support for Anu. They didn't need a son like that in their family. He was as good as dead to them. It was a phone that interrupted Vikram. "Yes.." It was from an unknown number so, he naturally thought it was the police chief with whom he had talked a few minutes ago. "What? Where?" "What happened?" Anjali asked sensing the alarm on her husband's face. "Vinoth.." Vikram couldn't say what he wanted to say. He felt like his tongue was tied. "What happened to Vinoth?" His mother shook him trying to bring him out of traumatism. "Amma.." He whispered as tears started leaking out of his eyes, "Vinoth fell off from our construction sight. The police assume it's suicide.." His mother didn't hear the rest as she collapsed on the ground. Anu felt all the air knocked out of her system. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. No, No, No.. This can't be happening. This was not what she wanted. She wanted to break his marriage with Kaveri so that she could live with him happily but it seemed like that would never happen. Oh God, why? Why did she do it? If not married to him, she could have spent a life watching him living happily with his wife and children but now he's dead. Her love was dead! How was she going to forgive herself? How was she even going to live with such a sin burdening her shoulders? Author's note!! Hey lovely readers!!
