CHAPTER 1
RUBI'S POV The alarm went off at 6 am and all I wanted to do was roll over and go back to sleep again. "Get your ass up, Rubi." I lectured myself as I pulled the blankets up over me. I groaned, sat up, and adjusted my eyes to the darkness. I got out of bed and turned on the lights, and walked to the bathroom. I needed to freshen up and then head downstairs to prepare breakfast for everyone before getting to school. I was already very exhausted, having spent most of the night before working my waitressing job at my friend's coffee shop. I stared at my appearance. My long black hair looked as graceful as always and my brown eyes looked bright and cheerful even though I was filled with inner turmoil. I showered, made my hair into a half-halo twist and decided to wear a white T-shirt with blue shorts and white sneakers to college. I know my mother-in-law Stella would be furious, but then who cares? She's always angry with me without any provocations on my part. I walked out of my bedroom and looked around the hallway as I walked out to see if anyone was up too, but met no one on my way. The place was a huge beautiful mansion that just had whatever you can think of for a luxurious house with-over-the-top luxurious home decor. When I got to the kitchen, there was no one around, but I noticed the arrangements on the counter and knew it was Rose the maid who was probably cleaning. I proceeded to make breakfast like I do every morning. Stella believes I have to prepare breakfast for everyone every morning before I leave for school. I could tell she was just looking for a reason to prevent me from going to school, even though her daughter Mai, who is much older than me and still sleeping at the moment, was also going to school. I prepared casserole, an Italian dish, one of my specialties. The sun was already coming up when I heard footsteps in the dining room. I walked in to find Rose setting the table for breakfast. "Hi Rose." Rose was a very kind lady in her fifties who'd been with the family for years and watched Hector, Alex and Mai grow into adulthood. "Good morning, Mrs-" "Rose, please call me Rubi. I told you already. Besides, you are an elder to me." I gave her a small smile and she smiled back at me. "Sorry, Mrs-" She gave me an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Rubi." "See, that wasn't so hard, right?" "Yeah." Just then, we heard footsteps and turned around to see Stella taking a seat at the head table. She is a very beautiful yet sophisticated middle-aged woman who basically thinks the world evolves around her and her family. She cares about no one and has a venomous tongue that always says harsh things to hurt others. Oh sorry, not everyone. Just me. Rubi Santez, Stella Ruiz hates the very sight of me for reasons unbeknownst to me. I noticed it was just the two of us today. One thing was certain though, my morning was already ruined. She never seizes the opportunity to bring my self-esteem down. "Good morning, Madam Ruiz." Rose bowed her head in greeting. As always, Stella didn't respond to the greeting. She never does. Rose poured her some tea and approached to do the same for me, but I declined, shaking my head and she nodded in response before leaving the room. I poured myself some coffee and took a seat at the other end of the table, very far from Stella. "Good morning, Stella." I greeted her as I took my seat. "Oh, Rubi." Stella gave me one of her fake smiles, and I smiled back at her. But something was off about her today. She never cared to call me by my name. It was always one name or the other, taunting me every single day. "Sometimes I forget that you even exist, Rubi, but unfortunately you do exist and it makes me so mad." Well, that's not news, I thought sadly. But it still hurts every time she says it. "Well, I'm sorry about that, Stella, but there is nothing I can do about it." I stared back at my mother-in-law across the end of the table, who seemed to hate me more than anything else in this world. She raised her glass, studying me over the rim. Her green eyes sparked with hate and malice, mixed with something I couldn't wrap my head around, excitement maybe...? I couldn't handle it any longer. I needed to know what she was up to. "Stella, you seem quite excited about something today. Care to share with me?" She laughed, and I shuddered at the sound. "Oh, you bet. I'm so happy today, I'm finally going to see my son after so long." My heart suddenly skipped a beat or... two. She can't possibly mean who I think it is. "Which of your sons, if I may ask?" I asked with a small voice that didn't sound like mine. "Dio Mios! My son Hector, of course!" She stared at me with an evil smile plastered on her face. "The one who ran away from a lousy creature like you. Who else were you expecting?" All the air left my lungs as I began to panic. My heart dropped to my stomach, it was like I had been sucker punched. I sucked in my breath. Why now? After running away with another woman for a whole year, leaving me with his family, who never seized the chance to humiliate me. Why the hell was he coming back now? "Maybe when he finally gets here, he'll stop you from the disgrace you are trying to bring to this family. As if going to school like a hooker is not bad enough, you are also working as a damn waitress! Such Disgrace!" She took a sip from her water while shooting daggers at me with her eyes. "It's just shorts and a t-shirt-" She snorted and waved me off. "Whatever. As if I care about what you say." "It's summer-" Why was I even trying to justify myself to her? She obviously doesn't care about anything I say. "Well, with all those breasts and thighs you are showing off, you still look like a hooker. No wonder why your own husband doesn't want you." I grimaced and stood up abruptly from my seat, ready to leave. "Married women shouldn't be going to school, especially someone like you who is married to such a respectable family like ours. What am I saying? You'll never listen to me. It's probably because you are whoring yourself out there. But now that my son is coming back, everything is going to change for the better." It's more like the worst. I blinked back my tears as I picked up my backpack and walked out of there as fast as I could. This was my everyday life and it was about to change for the worse. It was always one humiliation to another. Now, everything is about to change for the worse and I can't help but pity my future self. I couldn't concentrate throughout the lectures, my mind kept transporting me to this morning about everything Stella said. Considering some of the shocks I've dealt with, especially in the last year, this was truly saying something. If Hector Ruiz was really coming back now, then my life would be more screwed and messed up than I thought. The night of our wedding, my darling husband, who just hours after his vow to love and protect his wife, got into his private jet and took off with another woman without a care in the world. Ever since then, he hasn't contacted me, not even once. Stella never failed to rub it in my face every chance she got, she always made sure I was around to hear some of their conversations whenever he called. We never really exchanged words with each other before our wedding. I knew absolutely nothing about the man I married and why he agreed to marry me in the first place. It was my father's last wish that I would marry Hector. He died in a car crash two days after I turned eighteen, but not before making me take an oath to marry a man I had never met before. We married a month after my dad's death. Hector was twenty-five years old then, and I was just eighteen. I was never able to find out why Hector agreed and what secrets they were keeping from me. After classes, I spent a good amount of time in the park to get my mind off things. And embrace some peace before I head home. I checked the time. It was a little after six, so I could still go to Kelly's and see her. As I walked towards Kelly's Cafe, where I worked as a part-time waitress. I caught several guys checking me out. It wasn't a new thing to me. I was slim yet curvy in all the right places, I had boobs, hips and lips. Women were paying thousands of dollars to get through surgery. I'm not complaining though, because I love my body. It was my day off, so I just dropped by to check on my friend Kelly, who also owns the cafe. She inherited the cafe from her grandmother who passed away three years ago. She is a beautiful, strong black woman with big brown eyes and skin to die for. I just loved her. She is four years older than me, but that didn't keep us from being the best of friends. Even though she talks a lot and is funny as hell, she's the best thing in my life right now. "Well, I'll be damned. Look who did come up in here." I giggled and approached her. "Girl, it's your day off. So what are you doing here? Anyways, have a seat while I get us some coffee." I took a seat by the window. Kelly got me a cup of coffee and joined me at the table, looking at me curiously. "Spill it out!" "What? I just wanted some fresh air and to see you, too." She gave me a concerned look. "All that is good, but you look kind of sad. Everything alright with you and your in-laws? Or do you want me to go down there and give them a piece of my mind?" I laughed at that. Because that was something she could possibly do, she always had a way of cheering me up. "Tell me what's wrong, Rubi?" She seemed worried. "Hector is coming back today." I blurted out. "Holy s**t! You tripping, right?" Her mouth was about to drop to her chest. "I'm not joking, Kel. He might already be back home as we speak. Oh God, I'm freaking the hell out." I groaned and bit my lower lip. "Well, he should be the one freaking out, not you, darling. After all, he's the one who left." "Yeah." I nodded in agreement and took a sip of my coffee. "Exactly." She took my hands in hers and gave them a light squeeze and a sympathetic smile. "He should regret what he did to you. That was really so disrespectful, and no one should ever go through that." "Hmm hmm…" I closed my eyes, trying to block the pain away. "You always know the right things to say." "Ain't I too smart?" We both burst into laughter. She suddenly went all serious. "Do you think he might bring his mistress along?" I stiffened. I hadn't thought about that. Or I was rather trying hard not to think about the possibility. He wouldn't be so mean to do that to me. Or would he? Kel made an apologetic face as she spoke honestly. "I mean, he's been with her for a whole f*****g year." That sent a ripple of hurt through me. I gave her a pained look. "I guess, I'll just have to figure everything out. I don't think I can handle it." "You shouldn't let anyone disrespect you though." She sighed. "Girl, your dad did you bad." "You can say that again." I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "Stelle was just too excited about the whole thing. She can't wait to make my life more miserable than it already is." "She's a bitch." She blurted and I gasped and looked up at her with wide eyes. "What!? You know I ain't lying. She's also a witch." She said with anger and I couldn't help the laughter that erupted through me. "I just wish I had the chance to be one on one with her and I swear to God I'll beat her black and blue. I don't care that she's old enough to be my mother. Her actions speak otherwise." Her words warmed my heart, because I know she is not a problematic person and she is only fuming in anger for my sake because she loves me dearly. "Kel, you are so crazy. I appreciate your concern for me, but you shouldn't let her actions towards me get to you." I said and looked down at my watch and grimaced. It's so damn late. "God, it's late, I need to go." I stood up and packed my stuff into my backpack. "You sure, you are okay?" She looked up at me with a worried look. "Yeah. I'm good." 'I'm not okay'. I thought to myself. I don't know what's in store for me in that house tonight. Immediately I got inside the house, I began to panic. It's been so long that I sometimes forget that I'm married. Now, everything is about to change. I walked into the living room, and there he was sitting on the couch with all his masculine glory. He is still the most handsome and sexiest man I've ever laid eyes on. I have been hooked since the first day of meeting him on our wedding day. He was listening to something his mom was saying to him, but he suddenly turned his head in my direction and stared directly at me. It was as if he had felt my presence as soon as I walked in. His gorgeous hazel eyes stared at me with different emotions across his face, which eventually turned into a frown. I took a quick glance at everyone, and they were all staring at me too, and I could already feel the tension in the room. Hector, on the other hand, seemed angry about something. His jaw tightened and he scowled, before abruptly getting up from where he was seated beside his mom. He strolled over to me at the same time inspecting me from head to toe. He seemed to be fuming about something from the looks he was giving me right now. "What the f**k are you wearing, Rubina?" His deep voice did things to me, I can't explain. But the anger and warning it held didn't go unnoticed by me. "I'm f*****g talking to you, what the hell are you wearing, Rubina!" He hissed at me. His words took me by surprise, and I realized I was so lost in his good looks that I wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying until now. Wait, what? Did he just call me by my government name? What the hell!
