Chapter 3: The search team went their separate ways. Helena needed to check on Deirdre. The thought of following in her footsteps filled the young woman with dread. Did she owe her sanity or very life to Alexei or any of her crew? How could she ever answer that? That was a question she was certain every leader eventually asked themselves. How each one answered in the dark of night might be different. Would anyone know until the time came to make the decision? Helena doubted it. She needed to focus on what she could do now, not what might happen in the future. She pushed her aunt’s door open, and the young Chinese woman, Gertrude, sat reading aloud. She stopped when she sensed Helena’s presence. “Don’t stop on my account,” Helena said. “It’s all right. I came to a good stopping point,”
