Chapter Ten Country Maid The ride to Valerie’s house took two hours. Gail brought with her two suitcases, her cell phone, her laptop and her clarinet. Roth unlocked the front door and then, in an unwonted gesture of gallantry, carried her suitcases into the house. She followed him through the hallway and past the living room, stopping at a door near the back of the house. He went in and dropped the suitcases on the floor. “This will be your bedroom. What do you think?” The room was small but cozy, the walls painted a cheery light green. A window overlooked the back yard. Bright sunlight streamed through the half-open Venetian blinds. She looked around at the furniture. There was of course a bed, night stand, chest of drawers, also a bookcase, a small TV and a large desk. “It looks nic
