A week later, I walked into school with my head bent. My hair was in its usual centre part so that the long blonde locks could fall to curtain my face from the mocking gaze of my peers. It was a remarkably peaceful environment I walked into as a lot of people did not talk to me or talk about me. Only one person stuck their foot out to trip me but I only stumbled, not falling completely to the ground like the loser I was.
There was a slight buzz amongst the students, particularly the female students, and I knew that buzz. It was the buzz that accompanied Dylan, my friend Remi’s mate and our male alpha. Dylan is the Alpha of our pack and Remi was to be his Luna, but she is also an alpha and once we found out they weren’t biological siblings like we had all thought and after we found her real family, her pack, we had merged with them, making us go from Silver Moon pack and Green day pack to Silver Day pack, the second largest pack in the world and that’s why we have two alphas, Remi and her mate, Dylan.
Anyway, Remi and Dylan were being all cute by her locker when I passed by them. His hand was on her locker and her back was against it as they talked and smiled goofily at each other. Dylan was already a college student but he liked to hang around the high school as there were more wolves here than the local community college and with Remi here, it meant he was to be seen on school grounds at least once a day. I contemplated stopping to say hi to them but decided against being a bother.
“Hey, Clara,” It was Remi who called and Dylan assessed me with an exaggerated scowl. It made me smile a small smile because I knew he was one of the three allies I had in the pack, along with Remi and Jessy. He had no time to hate on me now as he spent all his time loving Remi. He could even be considered as my only other friend.
“Good morning, Clara, Dylan,” I greeted my alphas and Remi answered with an excited hello while Dylan nodded in the way cool boys often do.
“We’re having a party. You’re invited,” Dylan said and Remi rolled her eyes, poking him playfully.
“What my mate is trying to say is that there’ll be a party tomorrow night and we’ll love to have you as our guest,” She reiterated with a beaming smile. Now that she had her mate and they were all loved up, she always seemed to walk around with a smile.
“What is the party for?” I asked suspiciously. Remi was not one to throw or even attended partied but I guess things change when you finally find happiness.
“We’re celebrating our mating,” She answered and again her smile was very big. Wasn’t it like a month ago they mated? They had decided to forgo the mating ceremony which was like a wedding for werewolves so why throw a party after just one month?
“You guys mated like a month ago,” I felt like I had to remind them. It was kind of weird that I knew the first time my friends had s*x together and the time even, because I had been in the house with them, urging Remi to give into her heat and allow Dylan mate her.
Man, being a wolf was really strange. Knowing when people had s*x by their marks, smell and loud noises. It could be awkward sometimes but not as awkward as watching Jake White getting a ride in the school’s parking lot. s**t, I had to get that image out of my head!
You know the saying ‘speak of the devil and he will appear?’ well in my case it was ‘think of the devil' because as soon as I started to expel the image of Jake’s rocking Jeep from my eyes, the jerk arrived.
He was dressed in his traditional black attire albeit this time his jacket was missing. He wore a tight polo shirt and dark skinny jeans that hung low on his waist and showed off his unending long legs. His feet were clad in expensive looking dark boots that I was sure cost more than everything I had on. His dark brown blonde hair was artistically pushed out of his face in a way that was admittedly sexy but evidently careless to show he hadn’t put any effort into it. How could such a bastard be so beautiful? Why!?
“You done checking me out?” an amused baritone broke through my thoughts and I tore my eyes away from his flawless bronzed skin.
My cheeks burned a bright red and I choked out some unintelligible nonsense while Dylan and Remi watched in amusement.
“Good morning guys,” He greeted. As usual, when around Remi, he tried to overdo everything. He used to bully her before she mated with Dylan. Heck, everyone used to bully Remi before she became Dylan’s mate, Dylan included. We used to be the two most bullied people in school but now it was just me.
“Morning,” I answered meekly, stepping slightly to the side with my head downcast. Remi shot me a sharp look but I pretended not to see it.
She was always asking of how people treated me now. She believed all the bullies were repentant now as a lot of people had tried to befriend me when they found out my best friend was mated to the infamous Dylan. Sure they had tried to befriend me, but that was before they came close enough to find out I was even a bigger loser up close than from afar off. Most of them had tried to use me to get close to Remi so they could benefit from her status but they didn’t know that Remi was a very simple person and it didn’t take sucking up or manipulative scheming to get close to her.
Jake was telling an elaborate story and Remi was giggling awkwardly, still not used to him being nice to her. Her mate was getting more and more annoyed by the moment from the lack of attention from his mate and I just wanted to get the hell out of there.
“I can’t come. I’m sorry,” I said quietly. Parties did not fit into my schedule. The only parties I attended were the ones I had to serve in, like Jake’s nineteenth birthday where I had been the main chef as well as the waiter and then the cleaner after everyone had eaten and drank till they were somewhere close to exploding.
“What? You have to come!” Remi exclaimed with a pout. “We’ve invited only a few people but I’m sure a lot of people will turn up since it’s happening at the basement of the pack house. Come on, I want my best friend with me. Tell her, Dylan,” She pleaded with a frown creasing her brows and a small pout dropping her lips.
“You have to come. It’ll be fun,” Dylan said to me before leaning in to kiss his mate’s pout away.
They didn’t understand that it was much more than having fun or wanting to have fun. It was about my brother not letting me leave. It was about my mother working the night shift the next day so I would have to be with Jessy. It was about me being too tired from cleaning the dungeons, something I did every Friday after school, to attend a party. It was about me not fitting in amongst the dozens of wolves that would be there. There was no way I could have fun there because if by some miracle I managed to attend the party, then I would not enjoy it and the next morning I would get a beating from Quinn for leaving the house for something other than work and school. “
Guys, I’m sorry I can’t make it. I have to babysit Jessy,” I told them, putting on a fake remorseful look
“What kind of loser refuses to attend a party to babysit?” Jack said with a laugh. Two alphas turned to glare at him sharply and he shrugged without care. “See you guys later. I have an appointment,” He said before sauntering off.
“This dude has to find his mate before he wastes all his sperm on random hook ups,” Dylan muttered. The alleged dude turned to give his best friend double middle fingers.
“The party starts at eight, Cee. Jessy will be asleep by then or isn’t her bed time seven anymore?” Remi countered my argument with raised brows.
“I – She. Yeah, “ I deflated a little. I needed to come up with another excuse as soon as possible before I got stuck with an invitation I didn’t want to honour.
“Why don’t you want to come?” Dylan asked curiously.
I couldn’t tell them. Not without making thongs worse for myself. He would find it hard to believe that Quinn would brutalize me for having a detention not to talk of attending a party. How could he? Quinn was one of his friends and the poster boy for calm and controlled. Remi would believe me though, I was sure of it. She would believe me and then match straight to our house to confront Quinn and there was no doubt in my mind that it would only end in me getting more shunned and more beatings.
“I have – I have an English assignment to complete,” The lie rolled off easily from my tongue. Yes , that was it. “I’m not sure how to get it done so I plan on starting early,” I concluded, feeling on top of the world for being so smooth.
“English? I’ll be over at your place on Saturday then. We’ll do it together. I’ll help you,” Remi answered instantly with a wide smile. It was the smile that screamed ‘I got you!’ and I started to fidget again.
“It’s quite difficult. I – I’m not sure you will be able to help me,” I muttered as a final resort.
“Clara, I have a ninety five average in English,” She stressed. “ I didn’t get it from allowing a few grammar lessons confuse me. It’s settled then, you’ll be at the pack house tomorrow by eight and I’ll be in your house on Saturday to help you with your English assignment,” She finalised but no, that could not be it!
“I –“ I started to offer up another weak excuse but Dylan had had enough of sharing his mate’s attention with others.
“Clara, you’ll be at the party tomorrow by eight. Don’t make me compel you,” He growled.
“Okay, Alpha,” I muttered dejectedly as I began to pick my way through students to get to my locker. He was my alpha and he could compel my wolf to do whatever he pleased and I wouldn’t have a choice but to do it.
“You didn’t have to be an asshole,” I heard Remi grumble quietly as I walked away but I was out of hearing range when the reply came.
*****
I had snuck out. Oh goddess, I had snuck out, leaving my dad and a sleeping Jessy. Quinn was out to god knows where and I prayed he wasn’t at the party I was about to enter.
My palms oozed with sweat as I stood before the pack house. It was a towering mansion with over two hundred rooms, painted with a bright white colour with a magnificent black roof. In a house with hundreds of wolves, the pack house was never completely silent, but as I stood outside of it, there wasn’t a single sound coming from within.
I entered the pack house, dressed as stylishly as I could, and there was no single soul in sight. It was weird. I descended the stairs down to the basement that was dark and I wondered if I had gotten things wrong. I could perceive different scents but there was no sound.
Suddenly the lights came on, blinding me. “Surprise!” voices thundered and my heart jumped out of my mouth.
“Happy birthday, Clara,” Remi said, brandishing a cake and grinning triumphantly. Beside her were her mate, my brother, our beta, Mason, and a few people who were smiling phony smiles.
