Alina found it difficult to keep the conversation away from herself. The Prince asked her questions and paid her compliments and as he did so he looked at her with burning dark eyes, which made her feel embarrassed and somewhat confused. She found it difficult to know what she was eating and she was careful enough to drink very little. She was aware that whenever she took a sip from her glass he filled it up again. As they ate, the stars came out overhead and a full moon shone over the lake turning the water to silver. It was very romantic. But Alina kept wishing that she was not with the Prince and that he would not always be so effusive to her. He was certainly very good-looking and yet for some reason she could not explain he did not attract her in any way. His exaggerated compl
