Chapter Two

Sampson POV

I woke up to my alarm and quickly shut if off as I slung my legs over the side of the bed. Happy birthday Sampson My wolf Artemis said. Thank you I replied. We still have time to make a decision My wolf said. I know it's just not what I wanted to deal with I replied with a huff. Since my mate had died before we had any children our pack wouldn't have an alpha.

I had been contacted by the elders in regards to this last night. There were definitely options but I wished I could have my own blood child take over the pack. The elder mentioned that I could just have s*x with someone to get the child or  name one of the ranked members children as alpha. I had a lot of thinking to do but it would ave to wait for another day. I got up and took my shower for the day and got dressed. I figured my friends would have something planned so I dressed up a little in a nice dark polo shirt and my jeans.

I walked down the stairs just as Caroline was coming down as well. "Happy birthday!" She said giving me a hug. "Thank you" I said with a smile. She, Omar, and I had been best friends since we were kids. It was hard not to be with our parents constantly working together. For a while people thought Caroline and I would be mates but they had obviously been wrong when I turned eighteen and met Skye. Then when Caroline shifted she met her mate Edison. He was awesome and quickly became a great friend.

We made our way down to the dining hall stopping occasionally as pack members would wish me a happy birthday. When we got to the table there was plenty of yummy food. The lead kitchen omega, Mrs. Gaines, came out with a plate completely filled and placed it in front of me. "Happy birthday Alpha" She said with a sweet smile. "Thank you Mrs. Gaines" I said giving her a hug. She was like a third grandmother to me when I was a kid. "Now eat up young man you're starting to become skin and bones" She said before going back to the kitchen.

I knew that was a lie because of all my muscles but it warmed my heart that she took such good care of me. I dug into my food and watched my friends happily eat and chat. "Where is the birthday boy?" I heard a voice yell from the front door. Soon enough my parents came into view and my mom swept me up into a bone crushing hug. For such a short she-wolf she had the strength of a damn bear. "Hi mom" I said with a laugh as she gave a final squeeze before releasing me. "Happy birthday son" My dad said as he pulled me into a hug and clapped my back. "Thank you both" I said with a smile.

They joined us for breakfast and we finished our meals. "So do you have any special plans for today?" Mom asked me. I opened my mouth to answer but Eva jumped in instead. "Actually we're taking him out to dinner tonight" She said. "Oh excellent. Where to?" She asked. "Reign" Omar answered and I'll admit my jaw dropped. It was a very popular restaurant in town and there was usually a long wait-list to get in. "Damn" I said with a smile. "I appreciate you guys truly" I said. Eva waved it off like it wasn't a big deal but to me it was.

Once everyone was finished I stood up and patted my belly. "I'm going to have to hit the gym extra hard later to work off that breakfast" I said with a laugh. "Dad can you meet me in the office for a minute" I asked him and he nodded his head. We made our way to my office and he settled into one of the chairs while I plopped down behind the desk. "What's going on Sam?" He asked with concern. "The elders contacted me last night and I need advice" I told him. I explained the phone call and what my choices were.

My dad sighed and wiped a hand over his face. "Honestly I can't really help you. I know you wanted a biological child to take over but the pack needs an alpha" He said. I nodded my head sadly looked down at my desk. "Is there an idea of who you would chose?" He asked me. I scoffed a little bit and shook my head no. I hadn't even given a thought to any of it honestly but now I had no choice. "I mean Camden might be a good choice but then who would be the beta?" I said.

"Sam so long as the pack as it's alpha everything else will fall in line" Dad said and I let my head fall back to stare at the ceiling. "I know but I'm still the Alpha, whatever choice I make will have lasting affects" I said. "Son you are a better Alpha than I ever was. I know whatever decision you will it will be the best for the pack" Dad said then got up and left my office. I rubbed my face as the door closed, he hadn't helped me at all. I got up and went to my room and changed into some shorts. I needed to visit Skye, maybe I'd have an epiphany or something while I was there who knows.

I walked out of the pack house and took my shorts off quickly before shifting to let Artemis out. He gently picked up our shorts in his teeth before taking off to the pack cemetery. When I reached Skye's grave I shifted back and put the shorts back on. I sat down in front of the tombstone and dusted off some dirt and leaves. "Hey my love" I said as I straightened up her flowers. My heart ached as I talked and filled her in on what was going on. "So yeah I have no clue what to do" I said.

For the briefest moment I felt a shiver go up my spine and the wind picked up for a second. Well that was kind of creepy I said to Artemis. "Wait" I thought I heard in the wind. I looked around for someone but didn't see anyone and just as quickly as it came it was gone. "What the f**k" I said confused as hell and creepy out. I set an alarm on my phone and laid next to her grave placing my hand on it before taking a nap.

Once my alarm went off I slowly sat up feeling achy from sleeping on the ground. "I'll see you later my love" I said before placing a kiss on my finger tips and laying them on her head stone. I went back to the pack house and lounged around until it was time for dinner. I knew Reign was the kind of restaurant that you dressed up for so I changed into a button down grey shirt with long sleeves with my black slacks. When I got downstairs I smiled at my friends waiting in the foyer. "Alright birthday boy let's go eat" Omar said clapping me on the back. "Finally" Caroline said gripping her stomach.

We laughed and joked the entire ride to the restaurant. When we walked into the restaurant Caroline went to the hostess "Reservation for Lake" She said and the hostess begrudgingly turned her gaze away from me and checked her list. "Yes I see here please come with me" She said looking me up and down quickly before leading us to our table. She set down the menu's and silverware before walking back towards the kitchen.

Once the door opened Artemis perked up which caught my attention What's up? I asked him. He didn't answer but was still at attention. Then I figured out what it was, the kitchen door opened and I couldn't see who had walked out but I was overtaken by a strong scent. A small part of me wondered if it was maybe the food I was smelling but there was no way it was just too strong...and familiar, peaches and cream. Then she appeared at the table, the same big big blue eyes that I had seen seventeen years ago.

She still hadn't really looked around the table yet as she walked up. Would she recognize me I wondered I mean she was only five when I saw her last. "Good evening I'm so sorry about the wait. We're short staffed tonight" She said before everyone else looked to her. She looked at everyone before her amazing eyes landed on my. MATE! Artemis yelled in my head and I was thoroughly confused. Everyone in the restaurant disappeared from my view as we continued to stare at each other. I even caught the faintest sent of her arousal and I felt my d**k harden in my pants.

Finally someone cleared their throat which broke us out of the haze. I brought my glass of water up to my lips so it would block the view of my eyes. What do you mean mate? I'm old enough to be her damn father I said to my wolf. I don't care. She looks and smells absolutely delicious. Imagine those pouty lips all over our... Artemis said causing me to choke on the water as I did truly imagine it. Holy f**k I was in trouble. I heard her sweet voice address me asking if I was okay but I didn't want her attention on me right now so I motioned for her to continue.

Once they someone put in a drink and appetizer order Odessa walked away. As soon as she was out of ear shot everyone turned to me. "What the hell is up with you?" Edison asked me. I sighed wondering how the hell I was going to explain this. So I blurted it all out, how I had helped her in the grocery store when she was little and now that she's my second chance mate. "Holy crap" Eva said. "Yeah you're telling me" I said and rested my head in my hands.

Just as I lifted my head back up Caroline flawless shifted the conversation as Odessa came walking back up to the table. She passed out the glasses and I took another sip of my water trying to calm myself down. She had set her glass down just as I brought my hand down and our fingers touched. I felt the familiar sparks and warmth that came from the mate bond and I pretended not to notice. Out of the corner of my eye though I saw her blushing and I felt a rumble beginning in my chest but quickly stopped it.

When she was done pouring everyone's glass she told us the specials then walked away. "So what are you going to do?" Eva asked me. "No clue it's taking everything I have not to bend her over the table right now" I said and Omar laughed. "This is great" He muttered with a laugh before looking over the menu. She got back to the table and I could hear the manager tell Odessa about her next table. I watched intensely as he treated her with hostility and my hand clenched under the table.

After a few exchange of words she walked away from his table and went about her job. She came back shortly with our food and it really was damn good. The smell of the steak and the sides mixed with her sweet scent was driving my senses into over load. I heard the other customer giving her an attitude again and let out a slight growl which caused my friends to look up. "Calm down Sam you don't want to make a scene in here" Caroline said. I closed my eyes and took and deep breath.

However it seemed as Eva had other plans to help calm me down. I smelled her as she came up behind me. Odessa a delicious looking dessert in front of me and light a candle for me to blow out. That was very sweet of her. I felt her hand on my shoulder and the spark shot off and I couldn't ignore them this time. Our gazes locked and everything else disappeared. I heard her mumble a happy birthday before she walked away to the ass hat of a customer.

Now I could definitely hear his voice as he was yelling at her and before I knew I was by her side in time for his to throw his glass of wine on her white uniform shirt. She gasped and I gripped his arm and pulled him out of the restaurant. "What do you think you're doing?" The man slurred as I pulled him out of the restaurant and pushed him out of the door.
