Chapter 18The time had come for Jesse to leave Agua Fria. The town had a temporary sheriff, and the circuit judge had ruled. Since no direct killing could be attributed to Wheeler or ex-Sheriff Grover, they didn’t get the gallows, although Jesse wasn’t sure Grover would see out the years of hard labour that constituted his sentence.
