A chill creeps up over me. Now, this is Halloween. Kelsey's fingers curl - tighten over mine. Her breath rapid, hot on my cheek. Crouched together, shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh, hands tangled together, we shake as one person, like an engine sputtering, on its last legs. I squeeze her hand, lip folded in my mouth, teeth sinking into it. A beam of light passes the space to our right. Our breathing stops. Then Kelsey gasps as the beam spears left. Right for us. Our sliver of darkness quickly depleting. I wait. Mind fumbling, scrambling for a plan. Kelsey has one. Her hand rips from mine, off-balance, it sends me forward, my palms hitting the damp ground. Then she's off. Giggling and running. Sprinting for the street. Traitor. Maybe not. The light shoots to her. Someone calls out
