Bat
I studied the man sitting opposite me. His elegant hands folded neatly on the formic table. Right next to his untouched coffee mug.
There was something wrong about him. It rolled off him in waves. I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was. He looked normal enough even for a dragon. Younger than any of the others I had had the misfortune of meeting. But that want surprising when the only two I had met was Dewi, the Welsh Dragon of wale. Who was an ancient. And the asshole Wren, who wasn’t much younger.
Yet there was just something about Lock.
A power that I couldn’t ignore. Mainly because it didn’t feel natural.
Hell, nothing about this meeting felt natural.
“You want to ask me something?” one slender eyebrow arched. His green eyes sparkling.
Growling I sat back. “Stay the f**k out of my head.”
How had I forgotten their uncanny mind reading skills?
Lock chuckled softly. “I dint read your thoughts Bat. I don’t need to. Its pretty clear on your face.”
The growl died on my lips. Was I really that transparent? Schooling my face into something that I hope looked like indifference.
“Ask me whatever you want?” Lock opened his hands out, showing g me he was an open book. I frowned. Was he f**k. I wasn’t about to be fooled by his nice guy routine. Dragons couldn’t be trusted. It didn’t matter whether he worked for the council or the resistance. None of them di anything that didn’t benefit them.
“Who are you?” I kept my voice quiet. I didn’t think there was any other shifters here but that didn’t mean there wasn’t. the council had spies everywhere.
“Lock. My name is Lock.”
“That isn’t what I meant” Why was he being such a giant douche? With his young boy next door face and impeccable manners.
“Then maybe you should ask better questions.” Locks serene expression didn’t change.
Asshole.
“What colour is your dragon?” I don’t know what made me ask the question but it suddenly felt important.
“Green.” A flicker of hesitation swept across his face. It was obviously the right question to ask if it made him uncomfortable. Or maybe the wrong one. I would just have to wait and see.
“Green and some other things.” Pain lightened his eyes. A flash of that putrid green.
I swallowed hard. That’s why he had felt wrong. He was wrong.
I had heard stories of the experiments that the Mad One had performed. The horrible grotesque things she had done.
Was one of those experiments sitting in front of me?
“look Bat,” he sighed. “I don’t have time to g through the numerous things running through my veins. You know I am not a normal dragon. You sensed it right from the start. But to give you an idea of the kind of creature I am. I am going to be totally upfront and honest with you.” His finger tips tapped on the table nervously. “I am a twin dragon, which is really rare. Probably the reason we were chosen as dragonlings to be experimented on.”
It might have been my imagination but ii was pretty sure I could see pain In his eyes. No, not pain. Agony.
“My brothers name was Nox.”
“Was?” I raise my own eyebrow in question. And then it hit me. I had heard of Nox. The whole shifter community had. Even on the outskirts lie we were, that was the name that was said in hushed whispers.
Nox.
“You are Nox’s brother?” The heckles on the bac of my neck rose. And I didn’t even try to hide the loud growl that fell from my lips. He had been near Sarah’s house. Nox’s brother knew where my mate lived.
“Yes, but I am not like my brother. I have never been like him. I am a member of the resistance.”
Confused, I leant forward. “The resistance killed Nox.” I had heard those stories as well.
“Dewi Llewellyn killed my brother. “ There was no anger in his voice. Just a sad kind of acceptance.
“And you are ok with that?”
“I love my brother, I miss him. But I miss the boy he used to be,” Lock shook his head. “What he did to the Welsh dragons mate.. what he did to Amelia was unforgivable. Dewi did the right thing. He did what any mate would do in his position.”
He was lying. I dint know how I new I just did. There was definitely resentment there.
But he was right. Nox had deserved to die. Not just for what he had done to the Witch but for the numerous awful things he had done.
Nox was poison. A rabid animal. The world was a better place with him gone.
“Why are we here Lock?” I was tired of talking now. I wanted to go home and crawl into bed with my pregnant mate,
I needed to hold her.
“I like a man that is straight down to business. I respect that. I need a meeting with Diablo and your club.” He stared at me from across the table. our eyes clashed, neither of us blinking,
“Why?” I already had a sneaky suspicion that I knew the answer though.
“Because we need to Sabers MC to join the resistance.”
