Chapter One
One month ago...before the summer break.
" Dear Diary,
My name is Ella Day. I have often been called Princess Ella .. you know like the Cinderella story. Not because I'm covered in dust and have two ugly stepsisters, actually I do not have any siblings. It was because they thought having parents who gave me things fit for a princess, completed me. They always thought my life was a fairytale..but it wasn't. If only they knew some of the things money couldn't buy that I could never have .. such as .. the one boy I've loved for like ...Ever!
It wasn't because I wasn't beautiful or attractive.. ( I say so because I have often been complimented about my look :)) ..it's true I cannot lie.. back then in kindergarten and primary school I was a little Winnie the Pooh - you know, cute and chubby, who loved eating all the time, and yes you guessed right .. not honey though but anything sweet.
But little by little, the ugly little duckling turned into a beautiful swan.
I've learned that being beautiful doesn't always mean happy endings, that everything and everyone will fall at your feet...
Sometimes you need to write your own story... try your luck...
I've got to go...
One more thing keep wishing upon a star, you never know when it might come true.
Xo, Ella Day".
The alarm rang on her phone on her bedside table to the tune of " I feel it coming " by The Weekend, she mouthed the words of the first two lines, and then she turned and switched it off. She yawned and stretched her arms, her fingers brushed against something on the bed next to her head. She quickly sat up and noticed that it was her new diary which was opened on the first page and the only thing that she had written on there was "Dear Diary".She turned the pages and realized there was nothing else written except for those two words.I've must have been dreaming , it was such a beautiful paragraph .. that is weird ... it felt like I wrote everything down ... Ella said to herself and then smiled as she stretched her arms. Since she remembered words for words, she would have to put everything down in writing later. After a couple of seconds doing some stretching exercises, the Princess was fully awake. Next on her agenda was getting ready for school. Ella picked up her diary, got out of bed, and walked towards her dressing table. She removed her necklace and used the tiny key pendant to open the drawer and removed a small wooden trunk that her dad had gifted her for her sweet sixteenth birthday. On there it was engraved," The sweetest memories .. Mine for keeps". She unlocked it and put her new diary inside. She smiled when she looked at all of her diaries which she had neatly stacked inside the box according to the different stages of her life, from her childhood to her teenage years. My memories, the sweet ones, and the sad ones, Ella said to herself as she ran her finger on the front cover of the diary which was on the top of the stack.Ella loved to put her memories down in writing, she always said to herself that life is worth living so it’s worth recording everything in writing . One day she will sit and look back at her memories, have a laugh about it. She wasn’t the kind to think that the pages of your life should be kept blank , put it down in ink and make it last forever. The quote “ keep a diary and someday it will keep you” makes a lot of sense to her , there’s always a Dear Dairy moment in our life.Don’t we have this moment during the day that we go, Dear Diary, today I saw this guy across the road . I wonder if he noticed me or Dear Dairy , I go to buy my coffee in the same place everyday so that I can see her and today she actually smiled at me. Instead of keeping those memories in your head , don’t you think keeping the things we can’t say out loud in writing is the cutest thing?
She started keeping diaries in primary school, she loved writing about almost everything, exciting things she encountered during the day, what made her sad and happy until the more serious issues started to pop up with the hormones changes, issues such as LOVE. She called her diaries the travel of her soul, all the episodes of her life which she had often said would have made an interesting tv series.Amongst her diaries, Ella spotted the bright pink diary with loads of tiny pictures glued on the cover, that was her very first diary, it was a gift from a distant cousin who came to visit them one summer a while back. She pulled it out from the bottom of the stack and walked to her queen size bed. She climbed in her bed and sat down in a half lotus pose which was one of her favorite yoga postures. She opened her diary and smiled as she looked at her tiny drawings of when she thought she could be an artist. Ella turned the pages, she stopped on the page where she had written down about the first time that her father had told her the story about a little girl who wished upon a falling star and her wish came true. Though it was just a story, Ella took it at heart. Fantasyland was indeed for those young at heart and to be honest ,until today ,she never stopped believing in wishing upon a shooting star.
She was eight years old and was camping out on a starry spring night with her father out in their garden. She laughed as she looked at her writing and the pictures she drew of herself and her father. They were lying down next to each other in their sleeping bags, gazing at the stars singing twinkle twinkle little stars when she spotted a little shooting star gliding beautifully across the sky. She knew who her first wish would be about, she had closed her eyes tightly as she whispered with all her heart " I wish upon my first falling star .. that the little boy who I met today would like me and be my friend".The boy that she was referring to was Luke Michael. Ella closed her eyes and smiled as she went back in time. She still remembers the first time that she met Luke Michael. She was eight years old and he was the same age as her, but they were in different classrooms . She had fallen in the school playground and he was the only one who came to her rescue. He took her hands and helped her to stand up and as she looked at her knight in shining armor all she could see were tiny stars and hearts flying around him. He was the most handsome little boy she had ever seen and she wondered why she had never noticed him around before.
" Are you ok?", he had asked and she had just stood there, stared at him, and nodded yes.
He smiled at her and suddenly it felt like they were in a fairytale movie. Her favorite movies which she had watched so many times. The Prince Charming will come on his white horse, he will rescue the princess and then he will smile at the princess flashing his killer smile and everything around them paused for a moment as birds sang a sweet melody, then he will pick her up and carry her out into the sunset. Ella sigh and smiled , her mother's voice from outside her bedroom door popped her daydream bubble.Ella giggled as she closed her diary and hurried to put it away, locking it safely inside the wooden trunk.
" I'm up", she shouted as she rushed to the bathroom. So much for hurrying, one cannot pause time when you travel back in time to those sweet moments ... Ella said to herself as she turn on the tap in the shower.
Making her way downstairs to the dining room, she met her nanny who had been looking after her for ages coming up the stairs.
" Good morning nana!", she happily chanted.
The middle-aged woman smiled brightly at her,
" Good morning my darling one. Your breakfast is on the table, I have put your cucumber juice in your water bottle along with your snack . Your parents have already left ..so you will be eating alone", she said and Ella rolled her eyes.
"Nothing new...thanks so much. I don’t know how I will survive in this cruel world without you ", she dramatically said kissing her nana on the cheek and hurried to the dining room. Her nana stood there shaking her head and smiled , it was a blessing for her to watch that one grow and flourished into a beautiful young lady.
Both her parents were Corporate lawyers working in different law firms. So one can imagine when they started to talk about a point of law which they disagreed upon, the whole house would turn into a courtroom. Since they had a busy schedule, for Gregory and Carol Day one child was enough, but they had never asked Ella her opinion if being the sole child made her happy. In a certain way, she was happy, no sisters to spy on her or brothers to control her life, but sometimes she did feel lonely and that's when Luke came in.
Since that day in the playground they had become friends but little by little as they entered their teenage years when the hormones started flying around she wanted more than just his friendship, she had fallen in love with her best friend.But, because of their most important friendship rule that is, we should never fall in love with each other, she had to keep her secret well hidden and we, who had been in her shoes knows how much that hurts. Luke didn't want their friendship to be ruined because one of them had fallen in love with the other and things didn't work out for the best. That's why they made a five rules list which they had both signed ;
We don't do any dates like outings, no candlelight dinners, watching romantic movies, etc...
We shall never kiss.
We shall never be jealous of each other's boyfriend/ girlfriend.
The subject of love has a limit.
We should never fall in love.. with each other.
She was happy that he had not taken any other girl seriously and she had her hope that one day ... she will be out of that friend zone. Friend Zone! The classic trope of dating, when you are madly in love with your BFF but he or she only sees you as the bestie and nothing else. Her phone beeped inside her jeans pocket, she pulled it out and glanced at the screen, it was a message from Luke.
" I need to speak with you urgently!"
The message sounded serious and her heart missed a beat. Prom was coming up and she had wished that he will finally forget about those rules and take her as his date, that is a proper date which ends with a kiss and fireworks. It was their final year in high school before they moved to college. Things will be different since they got accepted in different colleges, Luke wanted to major in music education and she wanted to follow in her parent's footsteps by majoring in law and history .She wanted this to be their final moment, her last chance for her wishes to come true, for him to see her more than friend material. That he will wake up and find that what he had been searching for had been right in front of him the whole time.Who knows maybe her wishes might finally come true. Ella grabbed her car key and hurried outside with a smile lingering on her lips, she had a feeling that today was going to be an extra beautiful day, one with a cherry on the top.
