VERITY
I stared at the woman as she walked into the room and closed the door. She looked at me and smiled.
"I'm Doctor Hannah," she said, "And I am the one who treated you when you came in."
I nodded but didn't say anything.
I felt Sandy's hand, which had been in mine the whole time I talked to Bow a moment ago, squeeze. I looked at her, and she nodded.
I looked back at Doctor Hannah, who smiled.
"It's okay," she said, "I just wanted to let you know that you sustained a brutal bite on your leg. We have given you some medication just in case of any infections, and I am sorry to confirm that you did receive some stitches to the wound, which will leave a huge scar on your leg."
I nodded.
I gathered that it was terrible, but I didn't even think about it at the time. I guess I was running on adrenaline.
"You were fortunate," she said, "Some people who have walked through the forest lately haven't been so lucky; they either had died before they got here or arrived dead."
I felt my heart spike at the thought.
Doctor Hannah looked around, "We have had an increase in wolf attacks lately," she said, "No one knows why."
I didn't look at Peggy or Bow, but Sandy tensed when Doctor Hannah mentioned the last statement.
Something was clearly wrong.
I cleared my throat.
"So when can I leave?" I asked.
Doctor Hannah looked at me and smiled.
"Well, you will be able to leave in a few days," she said as she picked up my chart at the foot of the bed and looked through it, but she stopped and looked up at me.
"Oh," she said, "Congratulations."
I stared at her, confused.
"What for?" I asked.
"You're pregnant," she said, which made my stomach and mouth drop.
Doctor Hannah looked at me and realized, "No one told you the news, did they?" she said.
I didn't say anything as shock took over.
I'm pregnant.
But that means...
Oh no!
It could only be...
I felt the tears in my eyes as realization set in. I moved my hand to my stomach as Doctor Hannah sighed. I felt like my heart would beat out of my chest, but I ignored what she was saying, only taking in a few words.
"I'm sorry," she said, "I thought someone had come in to tell you. Well, it seems you are early, and we can have a look in a few days. We could keep you in till then."
I stared at her as a lone tear slid down my face.
Doctor Hannah looked at me and gave me an apologetic look.
"I will let it sink in," she said, "we can discuss things later on or tomorrow."
"I think that's for the best," Peggy said, placing her hand over mine on my stomach.
I kept my eyes on Doctor Hannah till she left the room.
I stared at the door as it closed behind her.
"Verity," Sandy called out, "It's the wolf baby, isn't it?"
I closed my eyes as a few tears escaped and gave a slight nod.
I opened my eyes and looked between them all, "I can't," I started to say, but Peggy shook her head. "It's okay," she whispered, moving her hand to my cheek. "You don't have to worry; whatever you decide, we will stand by you whether you want to keep the baby."
I looked at her and then at Bow, who nodded.
"Peggy's right," he said with a small smile, "we are here for you. You are our family now; we will be with you every step of the way."
"Me too," said Sandy, making me look at her.
My head was foggy once again.
What the hell was I going to do?
Could I bring a baby into this world all on my own?
But another thought came to mind, would the baby be a wolf?
I looked at Peggy and Bow, "Would this baby be a wolf if his father is one?" I asked.
Bow and Peggy stared, but it was Bow who confirmed it.
"I think so, sweetheart," he said.
I stared at him as I tried to wrap my head around what was happening.
What was I going to do?
"Don't stress yourself out," Peggy said, placing her hand in mine and giving me a gentle squeeze. I looked at her as a tear slid down my face. "You need to stay calm. You clear your mind for a while. How about you try to sleep? Or how about something to eat?"
I stared, but the thought of food made me sick, and there was no way in hell I could sleep.
I shook my head.
"I don't think I could do either," I muttered. "I don't know what to do."
Peggy looked over to Bow, who stood up.
"I'm going to talk to the doctor," he said as he turned and walked away.
As the door closed behind him, I looked at Peggy.
"Why is he going to talk to the doctor?" I asked.
Peggy gave me a small smile.
"He wants her to give you a scan," she said, "He wants to make sure the baby is alright."
I stared at her; how would she know that?
Peggy looked at me, her eyes scanning over my face, probably wondering how I was until she said what I was thinking. "We can mind link each other," she said, which made me c**k my eyebrow at her in surprise.
"What is mind link?" I asked.
Peggy smiled.
"Mind link is a wolf and mate thing," she said, "We can talk to each other through our minds. Even a pack can do the same, but as we are rogues, we can't talk to others, but Bow and I can as we are mates."
I nodded, trying to take everything in.
"Don't worry," Sandy said, smiling. "We can tell you everything there is to know about wolves when we leave."
I was about to say something when Bow walked into the room, followed by Doctor Hannah.
"Would you like to see your baby?" she asked, and all I could do was nod.
Doctor Hannah smiled.
"Your father mentioned that you were all worried about the baby as the wolf bit her," she said. "Even though I mentioned that nothing would happen, I want to ensure you are okay with this. I mean, it was a shock a few moments ago."
Doctor Hannah looked at me.
I cleared my throat.
"I'm in shock," I muttered, "But I would like to make sure the baby is okay if that's okay."
Doctor Hannah smiled.
"Sure," she said.
Doctor Hannah turned and left the room, but I looked at Bow with my eyebrow arched. "Father," I said, trying not to grin.
Bow looked at me as his cheeks heated, "I didn't know what to say," he said, "She asked if I was your father, and I said yes. I hope you don't mind."
I giggled.
"No," I said, "Actually, it would be nice to have someone be called that, as I haven't seen mine in a long time."
Bow's face changes and softens slightly.
"I would be honored to call you my daughter," he said, which made Peggy laugh. "So that means I would be her mother then."
I looked at her and smiled.
"Yeah, it would, mum," I said, which made Peggy look at me and look shocked. "Verity," she said, but I shook my head. "I would call you mum," I said, "I don't like to talk about my family as they never bothered with me for a long time."
Peggy's face hardened, but Doctor Hannah walked back into the room with a machine before she could say anything. She pushed it in and made Sandy move to the other side where Bow and Peggy were.
Doctor Hannah plugged in the machine and looked at me with a smile.
"Lay down and lift the gown," she said.
I did what she told me, and Doctor Hannah placed some gel on my stomach, which was really cold.
"We may not get to see any..." she started to say but stopped when an image came onto the screen, which my eyes went to to see something wiggling.
My eyes focused on the blob before me, and something took over my emotions. There on the screen was my baby, moving around.
I was going to be a mother. I knew instantly what I wanted to do.
"I want to keep it," I murmured, but everyone heard me. I looked toward Doctor Hannah, who smiled.
"How is the baby?" I asked.
"The baby is fine," she said, glancing back at the scream, "The baby is healthy and active, which is good for four months."
I stared back at her; that must be wrong. I was about to say something when Doctor Hannah handed me something. I looked down, and there was a photo of my baby.
"We will do another scan next month," she said, but I never looked up from the photo as I took in my little blob. "We can even find out the s*x of the baby if you want."
I nodded as I looked up at her.
Doctor Hannah wiped the gel off and headed toward the door.
"I will be back in later," she said. "We can review a birth plan and what to do with your injuries."
I nodded as she left.
As soon as the door closed behind her, I looked toward Peggy. "How the hell am I four months along," I asked, "I mean, we were hooking up, I know, but I would assume I would have known if I was pregnant sooner."
Peggy smiled.
"The baby is a werewolf, sweetheart," she said, "I know from experience due to having our children. You look around a month, but the baby will look older to humans."
I stared and let it sink in, but Sandy spoke.
"We need to get a werewolf doctor," she said, which made me look at her and give her a small smile.
"I know someone," Bow said, "I can ask her to help. She will be happy to help, especially now that she is coming back to town soon."
I nodded. Looking at the photo of my baby and couldn't help but love him or her. I looked up at everyone and sighed.
"How am I going to do this on my own?" I asked, but Peggy shook her head. "You're not alone anymore, sweetheart; you have us all."
Peggy looked at Sandy, which made me look at her. Sandy beamed.
"I'm going to be an aunt," she said, which made me laugh.
"Yes, you are," I said.
Bow and Peggy smiled.
"What do we do now?" I asked.
Peggy leaned toward me and kissed my forehead, but when she pulled back, she smiled.
"We will take you home to rest," she said, but Bow chimed in, "You will work in the motel now, not the bar, not when there are too many rogues around. We need to keep you safe."
I nodded, not minding that. I liked working in the motel more than the bar.
Now, thinking about it, I can understand why everyone looked at me weirdly when I was there, I am human, while they all are werewolves.
I looked between Peggy, Bow, and Sandy.
These were my family now, and I couldn't help but feel safe. I placed my hand on my stomach. I was going to have my baby.
I know I am supposed to tell Axel, but what will happen if he has found his mate? Would he accept the child? Or would he tell me not to have it?
I couldn't take that chance, and I knew what I was instantly going to do. I wasn't going to tell him. He didn't know where I was, and that was okay with me; now I had someone else to think about besides myself, my unborn child.
My baby comes first, not him.
I leaned back into the bed as I listened to Peggy telling Bow what he needed to do when he returned home, while Sandy giggled when he growled.
I could feel my eyes getting heavy as I drifted off to sleep with my family all around me. I felt at peace and loved for the first time in my life.
