I push my thoughts aside when I get close to home. Quickly I shift back and dress before I walk the last part to our house. I smell the freshly baked homemade bread from far away and my stomach gives a loud growl. Nobody can bake bread like Mom and my stomach gets more excited the closer I get to the house.
The modern log cabin that we call home finally appears before me and immediately I feel happy and content. I love our home. To everyone, it looks like a normal middle-class family home, but actually, we are filthy rich. But we do not announce our riches. Partly because of Mom’s history and mostly because we do not care for it. We have what we need, and we are happy. Love and happiness, that is our goal.
“Hi, Mom,” I shout as I enter the house.
“Alex!” Shouts Emily, my six-year-old sister, and storms at me. Grabbing my legs in a hug. “Can we go for a run now?” Big, brown eyes stares pleading at me.
“Geez Emily,” I laugh as I pick her up to swirl her around. “Not now, I just ran home from school. I think Storm needs a little rest, don’t you?”
“Fine.” She sighs and wiggles out of my arms, making it noticeably clear to me that it is not fine. Emily loves riding on my back, but not now. Now I need to talk to Mom. I put my backpack in my room and go search for her. I find her in the kitchen taking care of the freshly baked bread. I give her a bear hug and snatch a roll.
“Hey,” scolds Mom, “that’s for dinner.”
“But Mom, the cafeteria’s food was horrible,” I complain while adding butter and jam to the roll. Watching it pull in because of the heat.
“How was your day, honey?” Mom asks, smiling at me before continuing her task.
“Interesting,” I answer between huge bites of food. “I’ve found my mate and a brother.”
Every inch of blood drains from Mom’s face and white as a sheet, she turns to me. “A brother?” She whispers. Her hands shaking.
Quickly I inform her of my day, not letting out a single word. Including the finger, I flipped Marco.
“Oh Alex,” she sighs and sits down at the kitchen table, “you have to work on your temper.”
“But I did, Mom.” I defend myself. “I flipped him and did not punch him. That is an improvement for me.”
“You might see it like that, but that’s just one of the reasons why we insisted you return to school.”
“But I didn’t get into any fights.”
“You nearly did … twice with Marco.”
I just gaze out of the window. Mom’s right. For the first seventeen years of my life, I never ever got into trouble. But with the change of my eye colour, my life changed. Dad went to an elder and a secret council was formed. I had to start training in secret. I had to cut ties with my old friends and life. I had to reinvent myself and with that anger towards William manifested and suddenly I need anger management.
“What’s the circumstances of Nathan’s birth?” she asks with a worried tone.
“I don’t know yet, but the way he talks about his mother and William, I guess it’s similar to yours, but she’s single.” I cannot look her in the eye. I do not want to see the hurt and shame and anger. At least Mom’s story has a happy ending. “Nathan also mentioned something about knowing about one other sibling. But that is all I could get out of him before he clamped up and walked away.”
“So, William has three kids that we know off,” Mom mumbles more to herself than to me. “Question is, does William know about them?”
I shrug my shoulders. “I do not know, but I think he might be aware of Nathan. I mean the kid is attending Woodridge. There is no way that word of his existence did not reach William by now.”
“Phone your dad, you’ll have to call an emergency meeting tonight with the council.”
Without hesitation, I do as she says before I go to my room to start on my homework before training.
Dad and I are on our Harleys making the short trip to the caves where the council meets. Each and every night, Dad and I take a cruise on this road so that nobody would get suspicious when there is a meeting. It is just a daily father-daughter activity for the Sloanes.
The council consists of our Alpha Darius, his Beta, Shaun and two elders from our pack. After a brief moment of greeting, we sit down and get down to business.
“Thank you for attending on such short notice,” Dad starts. “An Omega from the Blood Moon pack has escaped. She accidentally overheard William and his Beta and when caught, ran away. They chased her and in a desperate attempt, she jumped off the cliff at the waterfall. Somehow, she survived and came to me for help with her injuries. She will live but is locked in the cells for her own safety. In fact, she somehow seemed relieved to be locked up and not set free.”
“She’s either scared or sent to spy on Starry River, I don’t like it,” Alpha Darius rubs his chin. Clearly not happy about the news.
“I thought so too,” Dad agrees, “but I do not see a reason for William to spy on us. Nobody but this council knows about Alex’s connection with him. After her eyes changed, she cut all ties with the town and when she did go out, she wore coloured contacts.”
“What did the Omega hear that nearly cost her her life?” asked elder Bert.
“He’s looking for his offspring.”
“Why? To kill them cause they are a threat?” Snorts Beta Shaun.
“No, to pick the strongest of them to marry the daughter of Alpha Clive of Ember Moon to create an alliance.”
“That’s preposterous!” spat elder Bert. “The alliance among Blue Moon Peak, Starry River and Ember Moon is the only thing standing in the way of Blood Moon wiping out everyone.”
“Exactly,” says Alpha Darius, “with Ember Moon on his side, he’ll easily wipe out us and Blue Moon and then he’ll pick off Ember Moon without them even realising it.”
“Maybe we’re jumping the gun a bit,” Beta Shaun cuts in. “First, we do not know if the Omega speaks the truth. Second, it is going to take a while for William to track his offspring since he made it his hobby to r**e. It gives us time to get ahead of this thing, if true.”
“Not necessarily,” I finally speak up, “I went to school for one day and already found one of his sons and also know there’s another son. If I, by accident, could find one in a couple of hours, it would be easy for William to find us all in a matter of weeks, even days.”
“What’s his name, child?” asks elder George. “We need to neutralize him as soon as possible.”
“We can’t go kill innocent wolves left and right,” I explode. “This boy is a son of an Omega of Blue Moon Peak. There is no way he will go along with William’s plan.”
“Until William threatens to kill his mother if he does not. What then? It will be too late for us to intervene.” Elder George speaks calmly, and it makes sense. William is known to kill entire families if one of them decides to go against him. Even so, I cannot agree to just kill.
“Well, with that argument, you should start by killing me,” I say stubbornly, crossing my arms in front of me.
“You’re not a boy and therefore not eligible to marry Clive’s daughter,” smiles Elder Bert.
“No, but William could threaten to kill my whole family if I do not play along and fight by his side. Remember, I am pure-bred alpha which makes me stronger than anyone. Isn’t that right, Beta Shaun?”
Shaun just lowers his head and rubs his left cheek. The memory of me punching him out within five minutes of training is still fresh in his memory.
“That’s true,” sighs Alpha Darius. “Jonathan is the strongest and most skilled warrior of all packs and has been undefeated for the last four years at all the tournaments and even he cannot beat Alex. Experience is the only reason why Jonathan is still the lead pack warrior and not Alex. If William learns about her existence and he forces her hand, all packs are in trouble.”
“For now, I think it best to find all of William’s children. If we could get to them before he does, we might stand a chance.” I suggest. “We already know that one of the sons is a Blue Moon Peak member. When the time is right, we will have to meet with Alpha Lucas and inform him. They are the largest pack and we have the strongest warriors. If Ember Moon does not join us, we will have to attack first rather than defend. It is our only chance.”
Silence fell across the room. Everyone overthinking my words.
“Agree,” Alpha Darius looks straight at me, “the element of surprise is all we have. I do not want war, but I do have a pack and young children to think off. Also, even if the Omega is lying about all of this, we must keep in mind that William will not live forever and sooner, rather than later, he will make an effort to find someone as bad as him to follow in his footsteps.”
“Then it’s decided, I will find William’s children.”
“No, Alex, leave it to us.”
“Dad, it will be easier for me since I’m in school.” I can clearly see the worry in his eyes, and I rest my hand comforting on his. “Don’t worry, Dad, I got this.”
