At the sales center of DH real estate.
This was where Rachel worked.
"Rachel, you're really lucky today. Mr. Wood bought three apartments all at once and didn't even bargain. Guess you didn't get the title of the best saleswoman for nothing."
Mia Lee, dressed in a black business suit, said with a jealous smile.
Mia was Rachel's colleague s***h best friend.
"The commission for one apartment alone is 2000 bucks. You made quite a fortune today. Let's go out for dinner and celebrate, shall we?"
Rachel returned the smile: "I'm afraid not today. I'm going to the movies with Evan tonight."
"Evan Jackson?"
Mia looked disdainful as she curled her lip.
"Rachel, I'm always wondering what you see in that guy. No offence, but he's jobless, idle, and he spends your money! He's such a loser of a man. You can do so much better than him."
"If I were you, I'd have broken up with him a long time ago. You are pretty, curvy, and Mr. Hill has asked you out for so many times. Why do you have to reject him for some kind of loser like Evan?"
Rachel pouted and scoffed: "Mia, don't say that. He loves me and I love him. That's good enough for me."
"Love? Rachel, if I didn't know you, I'd have thought you were a little girl who just graduated from college. How can you be so naive?"
"Can love buy you bread? This is a materialistic society. If you don't have bread, the so-called love would buy you nothing except poverty and despair. And let's face it, you've been married for three years. It's high time you guys had a baby, but pregnancy'd lose you your job. And if you don't have a job, who's gonna support the family?"
Mia continued: "After the child is born, Nestle, diapers, that's all gonna cost money. And when the child grows up, he needs to go to preschool, elimentary shool, and eventually college. Can you do this all by yourself?"
The long speech caught Rachel off guard.
A man who could protect you and make all your problems go away...who wouldn't want that?
But Evan didn't want to work, and she wasn't going to make him.
"Mia, that's enough. I'm not breaking up with him no matter what."
Mia gritted her teeth: "Rachel, why are you being so stubborn? If he can give you a prosperous life, I'd shut up. But can he?"
"Is this really the life you want, no jewleries, no fancy clothes, not even any nice skin-care stuff. You really should give yourself a break and learn to enjoy."
"Once you divorce Evan, you can find a man way much better than him. You'll regret this when you become a 'madam' but is still stuck with him!"
Rachel growled: "I said enough, Mia. I don't want any jewelries. What I need is love. If I marry someone for his money, it'd be suffocating and painful. You'd better drop this topic before I get mad at you. And it's almost time to log out, please just leave me alone."
Mia sighed in defeat. She said nothing else, but she hated Evan for ruining her best friend's life.
Soon, it was time to get off work.
Rachel grabbed her bag and headed out.
Evan had arrived at Rachel's company a long while ago. He was dying to give her the present.
"Evan!"
Rachel spotted him immediatly and ran towards him, like a little girl in love.
"When did you come? Have you been here long?"
Evan shook his head and smiled: "I just got here."
"Rachel!"
Suddenly someone called out to Rachel and turning around, Rachel saw Mia running over.
She came out later than Rachel because she went to apply more make up.
She glanced at Evan and seeing the cheap clothes he was wearing, her brows furrowed in contempt.
"Where are you guys headed?"
Rachel replied: "We're going for dinner, and then watch a movie."
Mia offered: "Well, I'm just waiting for my boyfriend. He's driving. Maybe you guys should come along, so you wouldn't need to take a taxi."
Suddenly, Mia noticed the gift package in Evan's hand. The logo said Patek Philippe.
"Evan, what's that you're holding? Is it a gift for Rachel?"
Rachel turned her gaze to the gift package also, a little surprised.
"Yeah it is. A small gift for my Rachel."
"Is that a Patek Philippe watch?"
Mia eyed Evan suspiciously. She knew all about these fancy stuff, because she spent the bigger part of her salaries on them, hoping to look pretty and dig some gold. And Patek Philippe was anything but cheap.
"Are you kidding me? Patek Philippe costs a hundred thousand bucks even for it's cheapest watch. A SMALL gift, you said? You're just a homemaker, how could you afford it? It's not a knockoff, is it?" She put it in a question mark, but you could tell by the look on her face that she was convicted it was a knockoff, not the real thing.
Mia's suspicion made sense. Evan didn't have any money.
Rachel was a little upset, not because the gift was a knockoff...She'd love a gift, any gift from Evan, even if it was fake.
She was upset because she didn't want him to feel embarrassed in front of Mia.
Before Evan could speak, Mia reached out and snatched the gift box from his hand. She had always wanted to find fault with Evan, to put him down. Now was the perfect opportunity.
If she could prove that the watch was a fake, maybe Rachel would divorce him.
"Do you mind if I take a look?"
Mia took out the watch as if her life depended on it.
Rachel saw what was inside and exclaimed: "Isn't that the watch we saw last time?"
Evan grinned: "Yeah, I know you like it. So I stopped by that shop earlier today and bought it for you."
Stopped by?
Stopped by???
Like the way you stopped by the grocery and bought some food?
Mia secretly despised him. But after checking the watch carefully, she found to her horror that she couldn't find anything wrong with it. It looked so real.
"I must say this knockoff is meticulously made. It's almost the same as the real one."
But still, it must be a fake.
Just then, a BMW 5x pulled over in front of them.
Mia's eyes lit up: "My boyfriend is an expert in these things. He has a Patek Philippe himself. I'll ask him to have a look at it."
Mia waved to his boyfriend. It was a man in a black suit. He looked in his thirties, and was wearing glasses of a golden frame.
Mia held the man's arm and announced proudly: "Rachel, this is my boyfriend Richard Lopez. He used to work at a top 50 company. He returned to York not long ago and is now a vice president in his company."
Richard stared at Rachel, apparently amazed.
"Mia, is this your best friend that you're always talking about? So pretty."
Rachel gave a polite smile: "Nice to meet you, Mr. Lopez!"
Mia cut in before they could exchange any more pleasantries: "Richard, help me check this watch. Is it a knockoff?"
