Chapter 8‘I remember this area from the old days,’ Joanne said as Sonja drove hard and fast on the gravel road that led to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest and best known game reserve. Sonja heard the nostalgic wistfulness in Joanne’s voice. It was a familiar lament, of how things had been. One thing Sonja had learned, though, was that Africa never stood still for long. Things changed. One day a country such as Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of the continent, the next it was merely a basket case. She felt for Joanne; her family had also been affected by the continent’s politics, but she was sure the other woman was still holding information from her. They were close to their destination, but Sonja received a timely reminder of the old soldier’s adage that it was easiest to drop one
