CHAPTER EIGHT

ZARA

Today I have my first meeting as acting CEO , it is important because it will be the first meeting that I attend completely alone , without the support of my uncle , who by now must be lying in a sun chair on a Caribbean beach.

Well , when I say completely alone , I do not mean it literally , because the operations manager , and the web development manager will accompany me , since this specific client is interested in a web application for their company , using an algorithm invented by our team of web developers.

And since they are the ones interested in acquiring the algorithm , they have been flattering us and trying to win our favor , for example , yesterday they sent me a large bouquet of flowers and champagne to congratulate me on my appointment as CEO , and even today they invited us to go to lunch after the meeting at a very exclusive restaurant , they hope to be able to celebrate the achievement of the agreement there , but I am still not quite sure about closing the deal with them.

We have three other companies interested in buying the algorithm , and they are all much more established , larger , and offer more money than this particular company; The only reason we agreed to the meeting is because the CEO of the company is an old friend of my mother's family , even though he is already thinking of retiring as well , so he is supposed to attend the meeting with his son , whom he is training to replace him , although , I have heard that he has not achieved much , since his son seems to be just a pedantic , drunken and womanizing type , who is constantly surrounded by rumors of s****l harassment of his workers.

I don't know either of the two personally , but I always make sure to research everything about potential clients , or competitors , before each meeting , the heads of each department involved , give me their reports about the company or people with whom we will have the meeting several days before it happens , and so I can know all the relevant data to handle myself during the meeting , and be able to reach beneficial agreements for our company.

After my morning exercise and a refreshing shower , I apply body lotion that has a satin effect , which will make my skin glow , as I will need it if I want to wear the pale pink dress , which goes to just below my knees , and has a single shoulder , with a small gold belt at the waist and my nude heels.

I put my hair up in a high ponytail and apply light makeup on my face , but a little heavier on my eyes to highlight them , when I am happy with the way I look , I head to the office.

As soon as my assistant Susan sees me arrive , she rushes over to hand me the iPad where the reports for today's meeting are stored , and tells me which meeting room we are going to use for today , so I head there , but I freeze at the door when I notice Tom next to the head of the web programming division , he is just sitting there staring at his phone.

What the hell is he doing here?

Zara looks quite surprised to see me here , and I don’t understand the reason for this , I assumed that James , the head of the division , had informed her beforehand about my presence here , after all , it was he who asked me to come and gave me the report to study , and be prepared in case I needed to intervene , although today I came more as an assistant , just as he said.

Before I have time to ask James if he informed Zara of my imminent presence at the meeting , a guy in his mid - thirties walks into the boardroom looking haughty , and gives us a disgusted look when he notices our ID’s , which indicate that we are not a high command in the company.

However , he seems to be too busy looking at Zara's butt and chest , to realize that she is not wearing a cockade , and apparently , he has no idea who she is , as after looking at her from head to toe with a lascivious expression , which makes me want to jump on him , and give him two black eyes until he is no longer able to look at her like that again , the guy snaps his fingers at Zara and says:

" Hey , girl! Make yourself useful and bring me a coffee with two sugars, "

James pales next to me and seems to be about to correct him , but Zara gives him a look that seems to indicate him to be quiet , the gesture is so natural , that it seems not to be the first time this has happened to her , and I immediately feel bad for her.

However , the feeling of pity is quickly replaced by one of surprise and admiration , when Zara raises an eyebrow at him , and says with a tone even more petulant than his:

“ The coffee maker is right there behind you , and right next to it , you can find sugar , cups , and even a jug of cream , you may as well make the coffee yourself, ” as she points to the small coffee station arranged in the corner of the boardroom.

The guy pales with anger , and his nostrils flare as he abruptly stands up , causing me to try to stand up too , but James quickly grabs my arm , and when I look at him in disbelief for not letting me intervene , he shakes his head and whispers to me:

" Don't worry , she knows how to defend herself , just watch and learn, "

Right at that moment , I see how the guy takes two steps towards Zara in a threatening attitude , while the anger emanating from his body is evident , but Zara does not move an inch from her position , on the contrary , she squares her shoulders , and lifts her chin to face the asshole.

" What the hell have you just told me? Useless girl, ” the guy practically shouts a few inches from Zara's face , and she wipes her face from the spit that falls on her , before saying in a mocking tone:

" I said , the coffee maker is there and you can make your own coffee yourself , of course , if you are not able to do it , don't worry , next to the coffee maker you will find the instructions for use , it is quite easy , i***t - proof , one might say, "

The guy turns red and seems to be about to get closer to her , but when he sees that I shift uncomfortably in the chair , he thinks better of it and turns to us to say:

" Call the boss of this useless fool , she should be fired immediately for her insolence! "

James looks at Zara who nods slightly , so he takes out his cell phone , and I see how he calls the contact he has saved as "Big Boss" , I look at him with a frown , because I find it hard to believe that he is actually going to call someone just because that asshole demanded it , but my anger turns to laughter when Zara's phone starts ringing in her bag , and the guy looks at her with a frown.

" Hello? " Zara answers playing dumb.

" Miss Arlington? There is a man here who would like to talk to you, ” James talks on the phone as he makes a tremendous effort to appear serious , as I am sitting looking from one to the other unable to believe that this is really happening.

And I am not the only one , because the guy , although it took him a little longer than I thought to understand what is happening , as soon as the realization lands on his face , his eyes go wide and his face pales completely.

" Please tell him that my time is too precious to be wasted on louts, " Zara says , staring at the guy with a murderous look , then hangs up the phone , and turns to leave the meeting room , but not before telling James:

" Please inform the rest of the people that the meeting is canceled and will not be rescheduled, "

I have to cover my mouth with my hand so as not to laugh out loud , while I see how the guy seems to come out of the shock he is in , and tries to run after Zara to apologize , but she simply closes the elevator door in his face.

Needless to say , by the time the asshole's father arrived , five minutes after that , his son could not explain well what happened , so when he asked us , we were more than happy to explain what had just happened that made our CEO cancel the meeting , which caused the man , who looked like a decent one , to explode in anger and start yelling at his son in front of all the people in the company , they continue to argue until security asked them to leave , and I have to admit that I have never been more proud of Zara in my life.
