Chapter 18
Dominic's POV
Kevin was pacing around my room. Even from a distance, my heightened senses could make out his frantic footsteps and the slight mumbling under his breath. In all honesty, I wanted to run the opposite way knowing I was approaching a full scolding session.
The moment I pushed open my door, Kevin rushed to my side.
"Why are you returning just now?", he asked, glancing at the clock before his eyes returned to me. "The meeting ended a while ago."
"Leave me alone, man", I attempted to wave him off, walking tiredly to my bed that beckoned to me.
Talking to Clara has a way of draining me and the image of her flaring eyes flashed through my head for a split second.
"Dominic."
"You're worse than Morgana", I groaned.
"This isn't a joke."
"Fine. What do you want to know?"
"Where were you?", Kevin frowned. "And don't even think about lying."
"I was with Clara, okay?"
"Why?", he looked ready to burst a blood vessel.
"We're business partners now, aren't we?"
Kevin looked less than convinced. "Don't give me that bullcrap."
"I just had something important to tell her", I shrugged. "About Maxwell."
"Can you even listen to yourself? I told you to stay the hell away from her. Clara will only bring problems."
"How are you so sure?"
"You and Clara will never work out. It happened in the past and it will happen again", Kevin threw his hands up in frustration. "Can you even hear me?"
"Yes. I can. And she hates my guts, so that ship has sailed", I feigned nonchalance. "I just thought it wise to warn her about Maxwell."
"There you go again. Intruding in her life", he scoffed. "Clara is one of the smartest people I know. She would've figured it out even without your interference."
"The earlier, the better."
Kevin looked ready to punch me in the face. "What were you expecting? That she'd run into your arms the moment she finds out that Maxwell is the very definition of a devil in disguise?"
The thought wasn't exactly unappealing.
"No. That's not it."
Kevin folded his hands. "In case you've forgotten, I'm here to remind you that you're the Alpha of Silver Fangs and you're married to Morgana. Infidelity wouldn't be a good look on you."
"I'm just watching out for Clara. There's nothing to it."
He looked unconvinced.
"Anyways", I clapped my hands. "I have a job for you."
Kevin eyed me with distrust. "Which is?"
"I need you to follow Maxwell and find something that will prove I'm not interfering wrongly."
Kevin wasn't really in a position to refuse an order from the Alpha and he knew this, hence the reason his expression turned sour.
"Dominic. You're crossing a line here."
"No. I'm just finding proof that I'm not crazy", I mustered a smile. "The earlier you find something, the lesser the chances of me seeking Maxwell out and torturing the truth out of him."
My Beta knew how dead serious I was.
"Fine. But after this, please put Clara behind you and move on."
"It's hard to, especially with the project."
"You know damn well that even if you don't show up for the entire duration of the project execution, it wouldn't be affected."
My next words were a lie but I had to do that in order to put Kevin's mind at ease. "I'll think about it."
"Good", he nodded once. "I'll go make some...research."
"Thank you."
"Oh, and before I forget, Morgana has been searching all over the pack house for you."
"Thank you. I'll find her."
It took a few minutes of taking large gulps of air and steeling my mind against whatever hell Morgana was ready to unleash.
Just as expected, she looked livid the moment she spotted me.
"Kevin said you were looking for me?"
"You...", she fanned herself, blinking back the fake tears. "How dare you?"
"What are you talking about?", I raised a brow. I was exhausted and ready to sleep but thanks to this witch, I had no choice but to stand here and listen till the very end.
"My friend, Freya, said she saw you with that...omega", she spat the words with as much hate as her black heart would let her.
"And?"
"And?!", she screeched, her eyes widening in disbelief.
This time, I winced, forgetting to control my hearing. Her voice felt at least a thousand times more amplified. Kill me now.
"You were on a stupid date with her and you still have the guts to look me in the eyes?"
"I wasn't on a date with Clara", I massaged my temple with a sigh. "We're business partners, Morgana, seeing us together is inevitable."
"It was in a restaurant, Dominic. How are you even lying to my face?", her voice grew wobbly and teary but I knew her game.
Technically, I wasn't lying but I was too tired to deal with her.
"You know what? I'm sorry. It wasn't a date, just a business discussion. I don't know why you're acting like you own me."
"You're my husband. Of course we're bound together."
I held my tongue. Morgana and I weren't bound, I made sure of it. Even after years of being married by the books, we weren't anything more than that. No s*x, no intimate discussion and definitely, no mate mark.
Morgana was slowly getting used to it after a few years of her trying everything in her power to consummate our marriage.
Although I was married to Morgana, my heart was held by someone else, someone who hated me with a depth I may not be able to fully comprehend.
I wonder sometimes if things could have been different if I had made a different choice. Yet, I knew the choice I had made, even though it was a difficult one, was the best for Clara. She may not know it now, but I did.
And I'd make the same decision over and over again as long as I protected her in the end.
