The log cabin was nothing more than the decaying carcass of a house which had been wracked by nature's fury. It's roof had collapsed many years ago, leaving behind only a couple of rotten wooden beams. The walls were damp and cracked in numerous places. The steps leading up to the main door were worm eaten and could no longer support the weight of even a small hare, much less a full grown man. Covered in a crumbling sheet of snow, the cabin looked like a toothless old beggar in desperate need of alms.  Instead of taking the steps to the main door, Mortimer climbed inside the house through its broken left window.
