Chapter Six
From ground level there is not much to see at the ‘Palace of Heaven’ other than the stone walls and the blue sky above. Since the compound is at the pinnacle of the mountaintop, the surrounding land slopes downward. The ten foot walls block any view of the tropical greenery so over time one does develop the impression that one is standing in the heavens or the sky.
But I quickly learned that the name and the view were the only things heavenly.
I silently stood facing ‘Mother Maria’ with my wrists remaining tied behind my back. She stepped forward and I was shocked when she unbuttoned my blouse as she spoke.
“You’re the first girl we’ve had brought here. So the role we will have for you will be somewhat improvised.”
