“I am trying to,” Carmella replied, “but you know it is frightening for me.” Gerry frowned as if he was afraid that somebody would overhear what she had said, then lowering his voice he remarked, “Be very careful and don’t forget to find out what we want to know.” Carmella’s heart gave a little jump. Coming down in the chaise he had said to her, “What we have to find out one way or another is where the Marquis keeps his safe. I daresay Jeanne could do that better than we can. At the same time we have no wish to confide in her.” “No, of course not!” Carmella agreed. “But maybe I could then talk about the Ingleton jewels.” “That is a good idea,” Gerry answered, “but for God’s sake be tactful and do not make anybody suspicious after the necklace has disappeared that you have it.” notC
