As soon as Gerry was satisfied that his sister had agreed to everything, he left. “You must see Mama first,” Carmella had proposed. “I think that would be a mistake,” Gerry replied. “She might think it strange that I have dropped in without some reason and, quite frankly, Mella, we have to work quickly if you are to look anything like a professional beauty by next weekend.” Carmella laughed because it was a ridiculous idea, but she understood what her brother was saying and waved him goodbye as he drove off in a smart chaise he had borrowed from one of his friends.
