RORY
I couldn't believe my eyes in the darkness, but Kayden clicked the switch on one of the lamps and smirked at me. Here he was, sitting on the lab desk as if he owned the place.
"Ah, Butterscotch!" I rolled my eyes, pretending I wasn't startled at all.
"You didn't really think it would be this easy, right?" The lycan was so smug. I wanted to rub that smile off his face.
"I kind of did." I let out a confident laugh, closing the door behind me. I would have to handle this quietly. "Lycans are not known for being very bright."
"Funny you should say this out of all people!" Kayden tilted his head as if he was challenging me to prove him wrong. The annoying wolf was enjoying this. And what little hope I had that he didn't notice my wolf went to the bin. It was obvious he knew, and now he was mocking me.
"I don't know what you are talking about!" I cut him off. "Now, leave!" I tried to order him, hoping it would be enough.
"Why should I?" He jumped off the table he was sitting on. "It's always so shockingly fun with you!"
My lips curled involuntarily. Just the memory of sending electricity through him was lifting my mood up.
"If it's a shock you are after, I can give you some!" I taunted, and he was right next to me in an instant. Towering over my smaller frame, he lowered his head until our noses almost touched. Almost… His hot breath was on my lips, and I felt my wolf stirring inside. She liked his presence, and I couldn't blame her. She rarely got to spend time around other wolves. However, it was annoying because Kayden Brandt was the last person I wanted to be around.
"Don't tempt me," he snarled softly.
"Shouldn't I be saying that?" I lifted my chin and arched my brow.
"You can say what you want, Storm," Kayden laced his fingers into my hair, and immediately, I sent bolts of lightning his way. Yet this time, nothing happened. Only the grin on his annoyingly handsome face became wider. Gosh, I hated this guy.
"Oh, sorry," the lycan chuckled. "Not the effect you desired?"
"How did you–" I gasped, but he had already pinned me between himself and the desk, towering over me.
"After our… refreshing encounter earlier today, I decided to take some measures to make sure you are not too hot for me to handle," he tapped my nose, and I realised he was wearing gloves. He caught my gaze and nodded, confirming my suspicions. "I had a few free hours to find a senior witch to enchant these for me."
"Awww," I giggled. "You've brought protection!"
"And now, give it to me!" He suddenly got serious but still did not move an inch.
"Give you what exactly?" I rolled my eyes. "My affections are taken. Sorry."
"Did you find your mate?" His face changed slightly, and I couldn't read his emotions too well.
"No," I mumbled, explaining myself for some reason.
"Then you are as free as a bird!" He assured me as if it was his business.
"Thanks for mansplaining if I am taken or not!" Seriously! Who did he think he was? Annoying much?!
"You are welcome!" Kayden suddenly moved away from me. "And now give me the evidence you found."
"And you will do what exactly?!" I sighed. This was already a very long day.
"Examine it to look for any DNA traces," he looked at me as if I was stupid.
"Do you know how to do that?" A snort escaped me.
"And you think you're the only royal general who was trained to know everything?" Butterscotch seemed irritated with me.
All right, he had a point. And it was unlikely he was going to leave me alone. Besides, Darren didn't need any tensions between us and the lycans now. I could work with him for once and be done with it.
"I'm not giving it to you," I stated and looked him in the eye, receiving a snarl in response.
"But you can stay and watch me."
His brow went up, and I could see his lips curving slightly. He was definitely thinking about something dirty. Ugh. Men!
"Watch me work!" I practically shouted at him. "If you insist you understand everything, then it shouldn't be a problem, right?"
"I would put up more of a fight," he sighed and dragged an extra chair to one of the desks, gesturing for me to take a seat, "but I am exhausted today. So be it."
"Finally!" I grunted and went to the shelves to get what I needed.
When everything was ready, I got out the cigarette and noticed Kayden's eyes travelling all over it as if he was checking that it was the same. So much for trust between us. But whether he trusted me or not had little effect on me. All I wanted was to find out if this piece of evidence was worth something. If I actually managed to find something, it could help my cousin. It had to be a clue!
A few hours later, we were running a program on one of the computers, checking the test results.
"That's strange," I muttered. "There are clearly two sets of DNA, but only one match."
"A fairy," Kayden relaxed in his chair, scratching his stubble. He did look like he needed to shave. However, we both had something more important on our minds.
"A fairy," I repeated the word. It made sense. We all were on fairy territory when the ab.duction happened. "But not just a fairy."
"A hybrid," Kayden continued my thought. "A renegade."
"As we always suspected," I glanced briefly at the wolf and saw that he agreed with me for once.
"But what the hell is this second part if we couldn't find it?" His mind was going in the same direction as mine.
I already had an idea, but I wasn't sharing it.
"Anyway," I stood up and started cleaning up. "It's time to go. Tomorrow is another long day ahead of us–"
He stepped in my way, eyes glowing in the dimmed lighting of the room.
"You know something!"
The accusatory tone! The audacity of his!
And yes, I knew something, but it didn't mean I had to share!
"No, of course not!" I rolled my eyes slightly too hard. Acting really wasn't my thing. But before I managed to leave, Kay grasped my arm, holding me in place.
"If we are going to work together, then–"
"Who said we are going to work together?!" A laugh escaped me, and his grip on me became tighter. I could tell Butterscotch didn't like it.
Neither of us noticed when the door opened.
"Rory!" I was not ready to hear that voice and turned to meet Torrin's reproachful gaze. I kind of forgot about him, but here he was, in the flesh and fuming.
"Tor!" I cleared my throat, and the lycan released me at once. "I was just going to find you!"
"Great!" The dragon folded his hands over his chest. "Your room is ready. Let's go; I will take you there."
"Isn't it too late for that?" Kayden said all of a sudden, and we all looked at him, slightly surprised.
"It's exactly because it's late I have to take her there," Torrin insisted. "After all, Rory is my responsibility."
Kay's eyes shot at me like two daggers, but it wasn't like I owed him an explanation.
"Is that how it is?" He gritted his teeth.
"And you are?" I could tell Tor already didn't like the other guy.
"Kayden Brandt, the general of the Royal Lycan Army." The wolf pronounced every word with pride. And I suddenly realised how bad this looked. I have been accused of treason, and here I was in the middle of the night, with a general of another kingdom's army, hiding in a lab. This did not look good.
"He followed me here and is a pain in the as.s!" I tried to explain and heard both, a roar and a growl.
"I only followed you because you stole–" Kayden was livid at first, but then he stopped and took a deep breath. "Never mind. What did I expect of dragons? You fly too high, don't you?" He charged for the exit and added when he was passing me, "Even if your tail is furry."
Tor didn't say much on our way back to the dorms, and I decided not to share anything as well. I couldn't get in much trouble while I was here. The Queen sent me to Alpha Island, and all kinds of creatures lived here. It was to be expected that I would mingle with other species at some point.
However, when we were close to the building, I told him about Skylar and the other royals who were now here. He had to know this information.
"Rory." He stopped me when we were at my door. "Listen… I will not tell anyone about what happened in the lab, but you have to stay as far away as you can from this guy… and from anyone else. It's for the best."
"Don't worry about this," I told him. "All I want is to study and help Darren. I am not interested in making fluffy friends."
"Good," Torrin nodded and pointed at the door. "This is your room, and everything is ready for you inside. You have a roommate, by the way. And she is… charming."
The way he said that made me suspicious, but I was too tired to ask. Whatever it was, I'd have to find out tomorrow.
Nevertheless, my plans had to be ruined. I walked into the room, and the first thing I heard was the sounds of loud moans and slapping. Someone was having se.x in here. Great...
"Oh!" I tried to close my eyes, but the red glowing in the darkness made me wary. "I am sorry! I can just–"
What could I really do? There was nowhere to go in the university. I had to stay in this room.
Another loud moan made me flush to the tips of my ears, and then I saw a body drop to the floor. A guy.
For a second, I froze, thinking he was dead, but then he started collecting pieces of clothing, and I heard a woman's laugh, cold and menacing.
"Way to ruin the fun, roomie!" A girl with red eyes stood up and walked towards me, absolutely naked. Her short blonde hair was brushed to the back, and the side of her head was shaven with an intricate pattern. Her lips were unnaturally red even though she clearly had no lipstick on. At the same time, she had heavy makeup on her eyes, and I had to admit that she probably had the most perfect body. She smelled of wine, blood and darkness.
A vampire.
Awesome! My roommate was a vampire. Luck was not on my side lately!
"We'll figure out some kind of schedule," I told her with an understanding smile, but she didn't look impressed.
"The schedule is that the room is yours during the day and mine during the night!" She informed me. "So, disappear until the sun rises."
"Unfortunately, that won’t work for me!" I snorted. We either have to figure this out now, or the year will be hell. I preferred to deal with such matters without delay.
"Oh, I am sorry for the inconvenience!" She sneered at me, and suddenly the shadows in the room became thicker. The air was suffocating me, and I knew she was the one doing it.
This was the kind of game I could play!
I clicked my fingers, and immediately, a ball made of lightning appeared on my palm, illuminating the room. The shadows hissed but stepped back.
"You were saying?" I smirked at the vampire, and again, she did not look impressed. However, she dissipated the shadows, and it became easier to breathe. She was definitely better at acting than me!
"Jad!" She turned to look at the guy. "Is your roommate hot?"
"He plays for the hockey team," the man on the floor replied without hesitation.
"Good!" My roommate nodded curtly and threw a short black silk robe over herself. "I am in the mood for a threesome after this! Come on! Make me want you again on the way there."
Jad jumped back to his feet instantly and opened the door for her. He really did not object to any of this.
"Have fun!" I waved at them but still decided to ask before they left. "What is your name, by the way?"
"Triss!" The vampire answered after she gave me a look of disdain.
"I am Rory," I said.
"And I wasn't asking!" She scoffed. "Don't touch anything of mine while I am gone."
"Wasn't going to, but I may spray the space with holy water while I am here!" I grinned at her, and yet again, she gave me zero emotion.
"Your jokes are bland," she commented before leaving and shutting the door in my face.
So, this went well!
I went to my bed and recognised that everything was arranged exactly as it was back in the Palace. Torrin may have been my warden here, but he also tried to be a good friend to me.
I remembered the events of the day, and exhaustion overwhelmed me. How sad it was that Sky didn't remember Darren anymore. And that lycan was everywhere...
"Hate him!" I muttered, falling into the darkness.
~***~
My alarm rang after the sun had risen, and I realised one crucial thing – I forgot to set up the correct time and was terribly late for breakfast.
I took a quick shower and grabbed the first clothes from the wardrobe on my side of the room, gasping when I saw what it was. Cream high-waisted shorts and a white blouse with a knot in the front, this… wasn't what I packed. In fact, I clearly remember discarding this set as this was what my mother… stepmother bought me and made me wear sometimes. A ‘perfect princess’ outfit. In her opinion.
I quickly scanned the rest of the racks and realised the colours weren't what I had chosen. My things were switched.
Unfortunately, I will have to deal with this later. Now wasn't the time, and I pulled on what I had, adding white trainers to the mix.
I wanted to grab a bite before my first lesson and ran to the Dining Hall, slamming into someone's hard chest on my way.
"Hey, there!" A familiar voice left me astonished….
NOTE: Yes, this year we have vampires too ;)
Thank you so much to everyone who shared their stories today in my f*******: group(Marion Artwood: Den of Dragons). I am amazed at how strong women are! And grateful for your trust. New chibilanders will be posted later this week in Alpha Island ARC group. Don't miss the reveal.
