5. Complications

Only moments after our wolves merged back with us again, we awoke to a tapping on the window.  It took a moment or two for us to catch our bearings and remember that we had parked behind a fast food joint to get some shut eye.  As soon as I was awake enough, I felt my wolf perk up inside me.  I knew that this might turn ugly, but I motioned for Nate to wind down the window for the three men standing outside waiting for us to stur. “Hey there, we mean no harm and just stopped for a couple of hours for some shut eye.  We will be leaving soon.”  I started speaking as soon as Nate started to roll down the window on his side.  When it was rolled down a few inches, I could smell this stench on them that reminded me of black tar and I instantly began to panic.  Although it was a different smell, it was still a little but familiar.  I made a mental note for later to start to register the different smells on wolves that we encountered. “You boys are a long way from home....and from what I hear, you are heading in the wrong direction.  Your Alpha called and asked for our help to guide you on the right path.” The biggest one claimed while the other two stood behind him with their arms crossed over their chests and nodding their heads in agreeance. At that and the lack of sleep, I began laughing almost hysterically.  This asshole thought that he was man enough to be up to the task of taking us ‘home’?  We didn’t have a home for one, and for two-there is no way in hell we were heading back there.  I still needed to talk to Nate about my dream, but I could feel that he was behind me and ready whenever I was as he didn’t want to go back either.  ‘We could take these ass holes’ Nate said through our link and shrugging his shoulders.  A half smile/half smirk appeared on my face as I thought about what only I could hear.  Before I could reply to Nate, the men outside the Jeep became impatient. “Open the door and face us like men!  We can do this the easy way, or the hard way- your choice”  Yelled the one that looked to be the highest ranking of the three and probably had the least amount of patience.   “Buddy- whoever you are or think you are, trust me- it’s in your best interest to just let us start the jeep and be on our way.” I replied, speaking across Nate and through the half open window. “You think you are a match for me pup?  From what your old man said, you two are nothing but disrespectful pups that need to be taught a lesson of respect and authority!”  The largest man huffed again.  No doubt boasting even more because he had 2 pack members behind him to back him up giving him false confidence. ‘They are definitely not going to make this easy on us and I think we need to show them how respectful we are.’  I linked to Nate with a grin appearing on both of our faces.  Nate nodded at the men standing outside and unlocked the door while I opened my side and stepped out.  Nate was not left long before they were ‘helping’ him out of the jeep, but by the time I made my way around the back he was standing outside and facing them.  A very low growl escaped his throat while he waited for me to join him.  Nat’s actions seem to catch the men off guard which gave me time to finish making my way around the jeep and stand by his side. ‘That’s weird’, I thought quickly as I would normally stand in front of Nate or anyone other than that asshole of a father.  I decided to shake that off too because now, we both stood in the parking lot, squared off against 3 wolves who were most definitely a fair size and no doubt higher ranking in their pack. “So, what was that you were saying about respect?  Sounds to me like you are nothing more than a bunch of lackeys for the Silvertail Pack Alpha.  We are no longer a part of that pack and we will never go back.  You would have to kill us first!” Nate spoke to them in a very low growl, surprising me again because I have never seen this much aggression or power come from him.  He was normally my voice of reason, the one to keep me calm and talk me down. Without much time to think, the three growled and lunged at us.  I shoved the first man aside, throwing him about 10 feet away, giving Nat and I a moment to focus on the 2 men that were slightly smaller than the first.  As though we shared the same thought and mind, the 2 men stood side by side in front of us and stepped into our space.  Nate and I both planted our left legs in front of us and shifted out weight to our back leg at the same time. The two men took a swing and we easily blocked them with our left arms before pinching our right fists forward along with our weight and hitting the men square in the chests and knocking them to the ground.  They stayed down, grasping their chests and fighting for air.  The first man had regained his footing and had made his way back to us.  I felt a sharp pain in my side just as we were turning to him.     I could see that he did a partial shift, allowing his arms to become claws and that one claw was dripping blood.  My blood!  Anger filled me at the realization of what just happened and I knew that Nate could feel it too. I looked down and sure enough, there were 4 s***h marks that started on my back and reached around to my side as though that was not his intention.  He caught me at the exact time I was turning my body and the force of that along with his swipe made the wound a lot larger then what he intended.  The man that stood half shifted in front of us had this sinister look on his face, almost a little cocky too like what he had done would be enough for us to change our minds.   Man was he ever wrong!  I felt Anger flood Nate just before I felt a change in him.  The man who stood before us went from an over-confident, cocky ass to a cowering pile of s**t on the ground in less then a second.     I began to wonder what was happening until I glanced at Nate.  I was standing tall and determined with a look on his face that he was about to kill this man for hurting me and that is when I noticed his eves.  His now dark grey eyes had a hint of silver in them to match mine, but they had a slight glow to them.  If I didn’t know Nate, I would be worried too but his display of power did not affect me.  Surprisingly though, I began to realize that his new found power was really close to matching mine.  I knew how much he struggled growing up having to prove himself Beta to everyone and he had to work extra hard to keep it too so to see him here, this powerful by my side, I realized that I have nothing but pride and respect for him.     Nate broke through my thoughts as he spoke to the man on the ground in front of him while I held my side trying to pull my shirt off so I could use it to put pressure on it to stop the bleeding.  “We were going to let you go to live another day, but since it is you who needs a little lesson in respect-we will give you one.  Your 2 little friends here will go back to your Alpha with a message from us.  Don’t follow us, let us be and no one else will die. AND tell our former Alpha that we will see him again soon, I only hope he is ready for us.”  and with that, swung his right arm and for the first time I have ever seen it, he shifted his arm mid swing into a claw.  It impacted with the man in front of us just beneath his jaw, running right across his throat.  Blood began to spew from his throat as the man’s hands raised up to his neck, but after only 3 or 4 seconds, he collapsed to the ground.  He was dead within 10 seconds. Nate turned back to the first two, smaller men and gave them a slight nod to take off and go.  They scrambled on the ground to get to their feet and took off to a nearby pickup truck that I could only assume they brought here, hopped in and sped off.        I fell to one knee as the blood loss started to hit along with waves of dizziness.  Nate disappeared for a moment but returned quickly with enough supplies to clean my wound and pack it enough to hold the bleeding for a while to give us enough time to get the hell out of here.  He helped me up and he moved me around the jeep and into the passenger side.  Basically ran around and hopped into the driver seat and floored it out of the little drive through parking lot.   I managed to stay with it long enough for us to get out of town, but once we were out of city limits, I passed out just as the sun was beginning to rise on the horizon to the left.
