A Surprise For The Surprised

Hope's POV Flying in a private jet is most definitely better than flying commercial. I suppose it kind of made up for how I felt leaving my son knowing that I won't be seeing him for at least five days. Seeing his sad little face when I said goodbye tore my heart into a thousand little pieces. As a mother all that I have ever wanted was what was best for my son. I want to give him the life that I never had and getting this job can afford me that, I can be able to give him a life I never had, a life filled with love and stability, having the freedom to know that he will have everything he needs and more. Still, that didn't make things any easier, I am glad that he is such a brave little boy. I tried to explain to him as best as I can that it was only going to be for a short while and that very soon, he is going to join me. What pains me is that I haven't even thought about how I was going to explain a four year old I did not mention even once. Kim told me that I cannot hide him and I have no plans of doing that. I have found a way to make sure that Xavier doesn't find out the truth about our son. I promised to call him every night and I will make sure that I do not disappoint him. For now, I am going to spend my first night at my new apartment. I am glad that my driver was waiting for me at the airstrip when the plane landed. I stepped out of the plane and there he was in a suit waiting for me. " Evening Miss Mane, I am Harvey, your driver!" He said to me. It was not the guy who came to get me at the hotel, this one was younger and a lot more handsome, black hair, a perfectly sculptured body and a fine jawline. "Evening Harvey, glad to meet you," I said to him. He opened the door for me and put my bags in the trunk. I took out my phone and checked my emails, I was waiting on my contact down at the hospital to get back to me. Look I am not proud of what I want him to do but it is necessary. My son is the most important part of my life, I do not want to lose him, I don't even want to risk it, this is me taking necessary steps. "Yes..." I said with a smile when I saw that he had replied to my email. "Good news Miss Mane?" He asked me. "Great news Harvey, how long till we get to the apartment?" I asked him. "Just a few minutes." He said and drove as I looked outside the window. A few minutes later, he pulled up into a parking lot, he took out my suitcases and put them near a lift, after he opened the door for me and I got out. I walked to lift. He took out a piece of paper and gave it to me. "These are your codes, the one on the top is for the lift and the other one is for the apartment, no need to memorize them, they change at random, don't worry, you will always have a copy of the codes sent to your phone when they change," He said. "Oh, I guess this place is highly secured," I said to him as the lift opened. He punched the code and we went in. The lift went straight to the apartment, I was in my kitchen and now that it's mine, I can't help but admit that it feels good to be here. Harvey came in with my luggage. "Is there anything else you need me to do for you?" Harvey asked me. "No, I will be fine thanks." I said to her. "Are you going into the office tomorrow?" He asked me. "Yeah, I want to be there by seven, what time do you think it's for me to leave?" I asked him. " Six thirty Miss Mane," He said. "Well, I see you then I guess." I said to him. "Good night Ma'am!" he said. "Good night Harvey." I said and he left. I took out my phone and realised that it was late, I wanted to call my son but at this time, I know that he is already asleep, I don't want to disturb his sleep because I don't want Kim to be stressed out by a tired four year old in the morning. I rolled my luggage to the main bedroom. There was two door, I picked the first one and it was my walk in closet, it was huge. I rolled in my suitcases and picked out an outfit for the morning, that was a painful process to do. When I went back to New Orleans I went shopping for new clothes, I cannot wear jeans to work anymore, I have an executive position, I need to look the part, for tomorrow I chose a blue blazer, a white silk shirt, a pair of navy blue slacks and a pair of black stilettos. I took my toiletries with me and went to the bathroom. I filled the tap while I got out of my clothes. I went into the bathtub and soaked myself. I have no idea how tomorrow is going to go but I am hopeful. I was relaxed after my bath, I went to bed and before I knew it, I was fast asleep. My alarm went off at five and I got myself ready for work, when I was done I went downstairs only to find Harvey in my kitchen with a cup of coffee in his hand. I realised that there was another guy and an older lady I didn't know sitting by the kitchen island. " Miss Mane, I am glad that you are here, this is Chef Stevens, he will be preparing your meals and this is Mrs Jones, she is your house executive." Harvey said to me. "Oh... I am sorry, I was not expecting to see you today, well I am Hope Mane and I pleased to meet you," I said and went to shake their hands. "The pleasure is all mine," The chef said with a smile. The man was not too old bit definitely older than me, I am guessing that he must have been chosen for his experience. For one, I am glad that I have a chef, it will make things easier for me when my son is here and hopefully, the chef will make him tasty and healthy meals. I cannot get my son to eat vegetables, he hates them. "Mrs Jones, I am sure that we will have plenty to talk about later," I said to her. " I sure do hope so." She said with a smile. I don't know how to explain this, considering that I have just met her, but I like her, I like her a lot. I saw the ring on her finger. "Oh you are married?" I said to her. "Yes, fifteen years in July ." She said with a smile. "Miss Mane I am sorry to interrupt you but we have to leave now if you want to be in the office by seven." Harvey said. "Oh... Well, I see you both later." I said and made my way to the lift. Harvey took me to the office. I don't if he took a short cut because we didn't even take thirty minutes to get to the building. I was nervous, it is my first day here and I want to make an impression. I walked into the building and it was busy. People were going up and down moving like worker bees. "What is it exactly is this building used for?" I asked Harvey as we made our way to the lift. "It's Mr King's building, it's headquarters for all of his big companies, much like your own, each floor has its own thing," Harvey said. " Oh, okay so does this mean that he also works here?" I asked him. " Yes, actually his office is in the floor above yours, " He said. "You seem to know a lot about Mr King don't you?" I said to him. " Oh, I filled in for his driver a few months ago," He said to me. "That explains it," I said and the lift opened up. I was now standing next to a long corridor with a lot of doors and cubicles on both sides, the time was 6:45 am. I was clearly early because there was a hand full of empty cubicles. The people that were there looked at me with a surprised look on their faces. One of them came to me. It was a guy, he was wearing glasses, a pink shirt and blue checkered pants. " Hi, I am Dustin, are you looking for anyone?" He said to anyone. I am not the one to judge people but something told me that Dustin might be gay. From his voice, the way he moves his hands and the pose. " No, I am Hope Mane, the new Editor in Chief!" I said confidently. " What? But you are so young? I am sorry I mean that we weren't expecting you this early," He said to me. " Do you mind showing me where my office is?" I said to him. " Oh of course, it is the one at the end, let me get my iPad, I am coming with you, I am your PA," He said to me. "Oh, okay then Dustin this is my driver Harvey, I am sure you'll get a chance to know each other later, right now I am dying to see my office," I said. Dustin hurried to his desk and took an iPad. We walked to my office, I opened it and it was amazing. I felt like I was in a dream, I went from a small office with a tiny window to a huge corner office, a whole wall made of glass, I could see outside, the view was amazing, I could see Time Square and the live billboards from the inside. This was a dream office. As for the furniture, despite the two boxes on the table, everything in here was exquisite. There was three black and white paintings hung on the white wall, it was of a light house in three different sizes, then there was a blue corner couch with white cushions, a small coffee table. My desk had a glass top and three chairs, two on one side and one on the other side. There was a stained glass door on the other side, next to it, a bookshelf. "Miss Mane, I will be in the car, excuse me," Harvey said and excused himself. I saw the way Dustin was looking at him, it was like he was ready to pounce on him. I walked to my desk, I pulled a chair and sat down. "You may take a seat Dustin," I said to him. "Thank you," He said and pulled a chair. " So Dustin, did you work with the previous chief editor?" I asked him. "Yes, three months before she was let go," He said to me. "Good, I need files on everything she worked on, go as far back as six months, we will take it from there," I said to him. " It will take me a couple of hours to get you all the information you requested," He said. " That is okay, I am in no rush." I said to him. " I don't see a laptop? Where is it?" I asked him. " Oh the guys in IT are still setting it up, they should be done in a few minutes, I will bring it to you," He said. " That's good, what are these boxes for?" I asked him. " I don't know, I just signed for them," He said. " Okay, so do I have any meetings I need to know about?" I asked him. " Not for the rest of the week, Mr King said that you needed to get your feet in the water first," He said to me. "That was thoughtful of him," I said. "I thought so too," He said, he sounded sceptical. "Well if that is all, you can go ahead and get me what I asked for," I said to him. "Will do..." He said and left. I went stood up and opened the first box, there was a red box inside. I took out the red box and put on a table, I opened it and inside I found a book. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, first edition, at the bottom of the inside, there was certification of the book. " Oh My God..." I softly said and ran my hands through the old book. I know for a fact the book is expensive. First editions like this are rare to find. This was definitely one gift, I never expected to get. I opened the second box and inside I found a cell phone, a new iPhone and a note. " A little something to welcome you!" The note said. It was not signed but I have an idea where it comes from. I put the book back inside the red box. Working here seems to come with a lot of perks. I was about to sit down when someone knocked on my door. "Come in," I said and took a seat. The door opened and a guy in a suit made his way to my office, he had an envelope. " Miss Mane?" He asked. "Yes," I said to him. " This is for you," He gave me the envelope with big bold letters in red written "Private" on it. "Thanks, " I said and took the envelope. I opened it and inside, I found my contract. I took it out. I took a deep breathe and read through it. The contract was pretty standard, I read the fine print and in about an hour, I was done with it. Dustin came back with a lot of files. I know myself and I know that I wouldn't be able to work here, I told Dustin that I was going to work from home. I had already signed the contract, there was no use keeping it here with me. I called Harvey and told him that I was coming down, I asked him where the legal team was, I wanted to drop it off. He told me that the legal team was on the same floor as Mr King. I went upstairs only to find that the person I was looking for had gone on a lunch meeting. I saw Mr King's name written on one of the corner offices, there was a lady who looked like she was packing up her things, from where her table is placed, I am sure that she is his PA. She took her things and walked towards me. "Hi, I am looking for Mr King, I have to give him this," I said and showed her the envelope. " Do you mind coming back later? It's lunchtime, I am sure that Mr King is busy," she said. "How about I leave this on your desk?" I said to her. "Fine but I am not going back there," She said. " It's okay, I will take it there," I said. "Fine by me!" She said and walked off. I walked to her desk with intensions of leaving it there on the desk, then I thought about how important the contract was, I also thought that maybe I could pop in quickly and give this to him myself. I am sure that he is a busy man, surely taking a minute won't hurt right? I knocked on the door lightly, there was no reply. I thought that maybe he was out, in that case I would feel better leaving this on his table. Afterall this is an important document. One that can't be out in the open for everyone to see. Foolishly I opened the door. I heard the door only to hear the sounds I couldn't hear from the outside. " Mr King I... Jesus!" I said and quickly closed the door as soon as I realised what was really happening. I was also a little disappointed that he would do things like that in his office! I couldn't stay there, I rushed to the lift and went downstairs. Harvey was already waiting for me by the car. "Miss Mane? Are you okay?" She asked me. "Yes Harvey, take me back to the apartment, " I said and made my way to the car. I was shaken and even Harvey could see it. I saw his backside, I didn't see the woman he was with but I know what I saw.
