Dylan's Pov:
After the phone call, there was nothing that I could do other than wait around for a brilliant idea on how to get out of this mess. I wasn't sure if there were any sick people in the rest of the building other than in the lobby and he didn't have any weapons to defend himself so he was a sitting duck. While he was quietly debating on what he should do a phone started ringing, it startled him so bad that he jumped. He got up and started looking for the phone, he found it mounted to the wall next to the bathroom doors. He grabbed the phone and answered it, " Hello?"
The other end was silent... so he decided to try again, " Is anyone there?" It was only silent for two seconds before a female voice came through from the other end. " Who the hell are you and why the hell are you on that floor? " He was stunned, he didn't think anyone would even question him being there with the circus outside, let alone receive a phone call from a phone on a floor that was under construction. " My name is Dylan ma'am."
For a couple of seconds, it was quiet before she finally started speaking again. " How did you even- you know what it doesn't matter. Are there any sick people on that floor?" I looked around me and responded, " Well considering that there were no people here when I walked in her I'm going to say no." I heard her mumble something on the other end before sighing, " Ok. I'm having my technical people unlocking my floor, but my floor only. We are going to relocate to that floor, we already separated our sick people and locked them away. But we need to get out of here before they break out of where we put them. "
Before he could give her any sort of response, she hung up the phone. He lowered the phone and looked at it with a frown. Great more people.. just what he needed. He put the phone back and walked over to the windows again to look at the city. There weren't as many people running around on the street anymore, it was mostly those who were sick and since there was no one to prey on they were just wandering around. Occasionally there would be a stray dog or cat who would be running by and some of them decided to chase after them. Of course, the animals were usually faster, but there were one or two who weren't.
I knew I should have stayed home today.
Daphne's Pov:
``When I hung up the phone I looked over at Mckenna, " Who the hell could be on that floor?" she shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. " Maybe one of the people in the lobby was able to get to that floor before the building completely locked down?" I shook my head, " That doesn't make sense, he would have said something if he was right?" She just shrugged her shoulders again and I rolled my eyes, wow how helpful she is being. If the apocalypse hadn't just started I would have been cleaning out my office so I wouldn't have had to see her ever again, but you know it couldn't have just waited one more day.
I left her office and went out to the floor to tell everyone who was left what the plan was so they would be ready and we wouldn't lose any precious time to get to the lower level. Everyone was on the side of the room that was farthest from the breakroom door. They were quietly talking and some were looking at the door with fear. The sounds had quieted since the first screams started but every now and then we would hear a growl or thump from the sick inside.
I walked over to the huddled group and gave them a small smile. " Alright, we have a plan to get off this floor. We can't get out of the building yet, but at least we can get away from the sick in the breakroom. That door won't hold them forever." They all looked at each other and looked nervous. Sadie spoke, "What are you thinking? What's the plan?" I give her another one of my smiles. I explain to the whole group what I had talked to the IT department about and how they were going to help us out. Before anyone else could ask any other questions I heard Mckenna's phone ring in her office.
I walk back into her office and see Mckenna staring at the ringing phone, I sigh irritated with how useless she is being. When I'm in front of her desk I lean over and grab the phone to answer it. " Hello?" without a second wasted Spencer started speaking, " Alright you go have 5 minutes maybe less to get to the bottom floor. You better hurry your asses. Be careful, there's a phone on that floor correct?" I said yes and hung up. I looked at Mckenna, " Let's go."
We both ran out of her office and to the rest of the employees. " We need to get going now, we only have 5 minutes to get to the floor beneath us, could be less." Everyone looked worried, I headed to the stairway that connects all the floors in case the elevator was out of commission or if we had a fire situation. I took a deep breath and opened the door slowly unsure if there were any sick people in the stairways. When nothing came running at me or any growls or screams came from inside I looked behind me to my employees and nodded my head and waved at them to follow me. I stepped into the stairway and slowly started walking down the stairs, I looked behind me one more time and put my index finger up to my lips signaling to the others to be quiet.
Satisfied that no one was going to make any noise I kept going down the stairs. My heart was racing 10 miles a second and I was shaking from how nervous I was. We were almost to the door to the floor we wanted when a door slammed up. Everyone looked up and coming down the stairs where the sick who were stuck in the breakroom. I looked at everyone, " Well hurry the f**k up we don't have time to just sit and watch." I jumped down the last few steps I had and went to pull the door open, but it wouldn't budge. What the hell? Did our time run out already? I looked into the glass that the door had and saw that someone was holding it shut. I looked behind us and saw that the sick were halfway down the stairs. "What are you doing! Let us in!"
The man looked up at me and he looked pissed, "You brought those sick people down with you!" I shook my head and hit the door, " They broke out of the breakroom after we were already halfway down the stairs, please let us in!" He started at me and I begged one more time, " Please." He nodded and opened the door, I quickly slipped into the room, I looked behind me and everyone was coming in to. Mckenna was the last one in line, but before she could walk in, the man who was Kyle before he was sick grabbed her. She screamed and tried to fight him off, but he wasn't letting go.
The man who was holding the door shut kicked Mckenna out of the way of the door and shut the door behind her. I ran forward, " What are you doing! You can't just leave her out there!" He held the door shut and looked at me. I didn't get a good look at him when he was holding the door shut and we were stuck on the other side, but I do now. If we weren't in this life or death situation, I would have asked him out for a drink. He was handsome. He had tan skin and not the kind you get from a salon or laying out in the sun, it looked natural. His hair was dark brown almost black and he had these emerald green eyes. He was 6ft tall, and he looked as if he worked out a lot. Of course, he had to ruin the view by talking, " She was a goner the second he grabbed her, I wasn't going to risk myself and these other people for him."
I frowned at him, " Who the hell are you to make that call?" He shook his head, " Just be grateful I even let you people in. I could have left you all out there by yourselves." I growled at him. I turned from him needing to get my temper under control. I look over all who was left, everyone looked pale and nervous. I couldn't blame them we were pretty close to being zombie food. I took a deep breath and looked around the floor. It was under construction like Mckenna mentioned, I walked over to the windows and looked down into the street. Nothing much had changed since this whole thing started, people were still eating other people, there just weren't as many sane people running around the streets.
I heard someone walking behind me, I turned and saw it was the man holding the door. " It's Dylan right?" His only response was a nod. With him not holding the door anymore, the locks must have been back in place. " I've never seen you before, how did you get on this floor?" He shrugged, " I was walking to my truck when this old lady started running at me, I had to shoot her because she wouldn't stop. I ran into the nearest building to get off the street which just happened to be yours and a bunch of sick followed me into the lobby. I quickly found the stairs and ran up a couple of floors before walking into this one, it was under construction so I knew no one would be up here and it would be safe for a while. Then you called me."
I nodded satisfied that he wasn't just some homeless person who managed to get past security that was camping out on this floor or something. I stuck out my hand, " Well Dylan I'm Daphne, and it looks like we are going to be stuck together until we manage to find a way out of this building. " He grabbed my hand and shook it shooting me a small smile. " Nice to meet you, Daphne."
