Zenya's POV.
“Sweetheart, wake up! It’s already 8 o’clock in the morning and you are still sleeping. How will you manage your married life when you sleep until the sun rays fall into your face? One day you will have to go to your in-laws’ home and you have to serve them.”
"Oh please, mom. Not again! Not today. Don't scream, I'll wake up!"
That was my mom’s morning lecture every weekend. Why? Because I love sleep. There was no chance to sleep in on weekdays since I had to get up early to go to the office, so weekends were dedicated to enjoying heavenly sleep in my bed where I could sleep as much as I want.
We are a middle-class family and my dad is a retired bank officer while my mom is a full-time housewife. I am an only child and I was working as an HR Executive in Pyxle Industries. My mom always wanted to see me starting my married life since my 20's but I am 23-years-old now and there was no way in hell I wanted to get married. My dream was to spend an independent life. Why was marriage so important all the time? Why can't people live their own happy life without a partner? These questions made me wonder every time my mom brought up my marriage. But after hearing her morning nagging, my sleep was spoiled and so I woke up to start my day.
I was particularly nervous that day because two weeks ago I applied for an MBA program at Philadelphia University in America, the land of opportunity. They were finally going to publish their selected name list of the candidates for the program. It was my long-awaited dream to come true if I got selected. I had my breakfast before logging into my office email to check if I received any new emails. The only thing I received was the replacement candidate list for my Finance Manager position. So, I picked up my phone and started to call each candidate to schedule their interview.
After doing some work, I visited my garden to check on the vegetables that I planted. I always loved them, the way they grow up, and most importantly, the harvesting part. Sometimes, I share my over-flowing portions with my neighbors also. Soon, the clock struck 11 o’clock, indicating that it was high time to check whether I was selected for the MBA program. Oh God, please have mercy on me!
I logged into the site and checked my application with nervous hands. Holy cow! I couldn’t believe my own eyes, I was successfully selected for the program and it was starting in four weeks. The minute I read the good news I started jumping, screaming with joy.
"Aaaaahhhh! Mom! Mom where are you? Where is my sweet lady bean? Where are you?" I looked around the house for her only to find her in the kitchen, busy cooking.
"You scared me to death, girl! Why did you scream?" She asked me with her large eyes, slapping my arm playfully.
"Mom, I've been selected for the MBA program at Philadelphia University, USA! It’s starting in four weeks. Oh God, Mom, can you believe that your little girl is going to be flying?!" I started to dance with her happily but then I saw tears in her eyes.
"What’s wrong, mom? Aren’t you happy?" I lifted up her chin with my hand.
"No, no, my baby. I was just thinking how big you have become. Now, you are going to fly away overseas for your higher studies. I’m just worried about your safety and how much we are going to miss you. Our cutie pie!" My mother hugged me tightly and we both remained there in silence for few minutes in each other’s arms.
After our sentimental moment, my mother continued cooking lunch and for dinner, she promised that she was going to cook something special since we received such good news. I also received an email from Philadelphia University mentioning what I needed to bring along and the necessary documents I needed to have before proceeding to the American embassy. And further, they requested me to arrive in America at least one week in advance, since I was a foreigner and it generally takes some time to adjust to the environment.
But besides all that, I was so excited and had already planned to go shopping for new clothes and other necessary stuff. I was looking forward to staying at the university hostel. I was required to pay a small fee monthly, and for that, I had to find a part-time job once I arrived in Philadelphia.
I got prepared hurriedly and ordered a Uber cab so I could go to the mall the very same day since I didn't have enough time to prepare everything. I informed my mom that I wouldn’t be able to come back home for lunch in time and that I would have it outside somewhere. At the mall, I purchased some leather jackets, jeans, casual frocks, T-shirts, undergarments, and winter clothes. I have always loved wearing leather jackets and floral jackets over my clothes. As for makeup, I don't like to apply makeup frequently because I sweat easily when wearing makeup. But I bought a new lip balm since my lips are very sensitive to a cool environment. Finally, I splurged my money on the foodstuffs I needed to take with me for my consumption.
As soon as I came back home, I informed my Manager about my successful selection into the MBA program and he asked me to submit my resignation immediately on Monday. So, I immediately typed my resignation letter by thanking everyone, mainly because this job enabled me to save money for the MBA program. As the sun started to set in the evening, I started going through my old pictures and remembering happy moments we spent as a family and with my friends. I've always loved my workplace, my bosses, my peers, and my colleagues. But, my MBA was a two years program which meant I wouldn’t be able to see them for a long time. Plus, I was planning to settle down in America permanently with my established career.
Only God knew what would happen in a country far away from my mother's land, Sri Lanka. Maybe my fate wasn’t as bad as it looked. After a celebratory dinner with my family, I grew tired due to my hectic day and so I headed to bed and slept like a log through the night.
