Chapter 13Near the ditch, Jude slowed down and parked the rental car. He turned the engine off and stared out the passenger side window at Route 79, his childhood street. There it was, across the narrow two-lane road. His house. His tiny country stone house shaded by two hulking oak trees. The very house in which he’d spent the only few happy years of his entire life. In his dreams, he still lived here. It was mid-August, the sun high and golden, and leaves of grass shimmered in the warm wind. Jude leaned back in the driver’s seat, taking in the light, familiar noises and scents of the country around him.
