“Oh, Bilal, I wasn’t aware you came over.”
Coming out of the kitchen with a tray of juice and cookies, Devara was pleasantly surprised as she saw her son descending the stairs.
“Hello, Mama.” Bilal’s greeting was followed by a kiss on both of his mother’s cheeks. He picked a cookie from the tray, moaning in appreciation as he bit into it.
Adora had been behind Devara. As soon as she saw her mentor, she froze. Although he hadn’t said anything yet, she was scared to her bones that he would soon say something demeaning. But, even as frightened as she was, she noticed something she’d never seen in her mentor since she got to the academy; his smile. She’d known he had a captivating smile, but seeing it up close made butterflies appear in Adora’s stomach. Her face turned a bright red watching the playful interaction between mother and son.
“Have you had anything to eat? You missed lunch with Bella, Adora, and me.”
Hearing her name, Bilal’s smile froze. He stepped away from his Mama and looked around the room in search of the thorn in his flesh. As soon as he saw her, his face pulled down into a frown.
Oh, there it was, Adora thought, the expression she was used to.
“What is it? Are you okay, Bee?” The change in Bilal’s countenance didn’t skip Devara’s attention.
“I’m fine, Mama, but it looks like I have to go now. You have your dear goddaughter around to care for.”
For the first time, the word ’goddaughter’ sounded like a bad word to Adora. She watched as Bilal left immediately after saying goodbye, as if he couldn’t stand being in the same room as her for another second.
“Bilal?” Devara called out to him, but he was long gone. “Bilal? What just happened? He was fine just a second ago.” She questioned aloud, confused.
“Don’t worry about it, godmother. He must not be used to me being around yet.” Adora forced a smile before reaching out to take the tray from Devara. Then, she walked out to the dining table where Bella was already seated.
Puzzled, Devara asked as she followed behind Adora, “Why wouldn’t he be? He has been around you for the last ten years, so what changed?” She took a seat next to her daughter as Adora placed the tray on the table.
“Mama,” Bella groaned exaggeratedly, “let it be. Bilal is just being Bilal. Forget about him. When next are you traveling to Germany? I would like for Adora and I to join you. It’s been a while since we saw Uncle Ariel and Airen.” The purpose of her question was to shift the attention off of Bilal, as Bella knew if her mother found out about her brother’s attitude towards Adora, it would result in an argument between the two of them.
After throwing her head back to let out a laugh, Devara regarded her daughter with amusement. “Look at you. The academy year has just started, yet you’re already thinking about that?”
“But, Mama—”
“No buts. As the next leader of the Raven Hawks, you have duties to fulfill, Bella, yet you’re showing no improvement in your training. I hope I didn’t make a mistake picking you as the leader.” Gone was the playfulness in Devara’s voice.
Bella’s head was bowed as she said, “I’m sorry, Mama. I should have known better.”
“Hmm.” Directing a single nod in her daughter’s direction, Devara turned to face Adora. “What about you, Adora? How are you finding the academy? I’m sure there are some readings you need to do to get to know more about our world. Do not let Bilal make a mockery of you. I insisted you be in his class, even though he thinks you’re not up to the task. So, please you have to make sure he doesn’t find any justification to throw you out.” Her words were spoken carefully and came from a place of concern.
“I’m doing fine, godmother,” Adora responded, trying to keep the nervousness out of her voice. If only Devara knew she was already in his bad book and how many harsh words he had used on her today, even being her first day in his class. If only she knew.
“Good.” Devara nodded her approval. “Well, I have to get back to work. Those elders can’t do anything right unless I’m there to supervise them.”
This drew laughter from both Bella and Adora, and before she left, they kissed her cheeks. A few minutes later, Bella turned to Adora with a question. “Are you done? Should we leave now?”
“Yeah, we can leave.”
“Alright, let’s go.” As they stood up, Bella reached out to stop Adora. “Don’t take what Mama said to heart. She’s always like that, yet she wonders where Bilal got the stuck-up character from.” Bella jokingly said to lighten up the mood after noticing the other girl’s downness.
“Thank you, Bella.”
“It’s okay. Just remember to read our history. Trust me, it’s not as bland as that of the human world. You will be shocked by the things that my kind has done, especially Mama. She has one hell of a history,” Bella told Adora, her voice full of pride, as they walked back to their dorm.
Soon, they arrived at the dormitory building. “I wonder where the boys are,” Bella said aloud as she looked around the main room in search of them. “They must be in the game room.”
That was Adora’s first time being there, and she was both curious and intrigued. In this realm of the Elites, separate quarters stood apart from the main dormitory and academy, providing them with a sanctuary of their own. Within the walls, each Elite possessed a solitary room, a testament to their elevated status. This decision, which was made by Devara, reflected her desire to maintain a level playing field among the trainees while recognizing the potential distractions that could arise from mingling with their peers. It is a delicate balance, ensuring that everyone can thrive in an environment conducive to growth and learning.
Game room? They had a game room in there? Adora questioned inwardly.
“I know what you are thinking, and, yes, we do. You just have not had the walk through the dorm yet,” Bella informed her, then moved to the door on the left. Following her, Adora stopped and looked around in amazement.
There was a magnificent pool table that took centerstage amidst the grandeur of the living room. Bathed in the warm glow of natural light, the room exuded an inviting atmosphere. The surrounding space was tastefully adorned with plush seating, creating a haven of comfort and relaxation. The walls were adorned like a window into another world, a painting captured the essence of beauty and intrigue, stirring the imagination with its strokes of color and emotion. It’s a room that whispers tales of relaxation and inspiration, a haven where one can escape the chaos of the academy and find solace in the simple pleasures of life. Truly a masterpiece in its own right.
Adora was impressed as she wandered around and basked in the beauty of the room. How was there a massive room in this dorm?
“Hey guys,” Bella called out a greeting as she walked down to a PlayStation in the game room.
“Hi,” Adora greeted them as well, before taking a seat close to Bella, still in awe of the scenery. How were they still the best of the best in the academy with such an amazing game room? How was it that their performance wasn’t affected?
She was about to ask, but became distracted when the door opened and Bilal graced the game room with his presence. Adorned in an attractive black silk two-piece pajamas. The upper buttons of his shirt were left undone, revealing a glimpse of his sculpted abs. Part of his shiny hair, dampened by water, fell from his man bun. It was as if a deity from ancient Greek mythology had descended upon the room, captivating all who beheld him.
Dumbstruck, Adora couldn’t take her eyes off him.
“Check the alert app,” Bilal instructed Ares with a commanding tone. He leaned over the screen as a message popped up. Beta Ethan had sent a message about some unruly rogues causing trouble for the smaller Packs.
Adora noticed the sense of responsibility and duty emanating from Bilal as he acted like the leader that he was. Watching him closely, she couldn’t help as her crush grew even more.
Shortly after, Bilal pulled away from the computer with a deep sigh. “Guys, let’s get ready. We have some unruly rogues to catch.” He let out a devious laugh before leaving the way he came. The other Elites stood up from their seats, leaving the room one after the other to get ready.
“Bella, what’s going on? What is the alert app?” Adora questioned Bella, who was already putting on some kind of gear.
“My dear Adora, the boys and I are about to go out and catch some rogues who have made it their business to harm innocent and defenseless Packs.”
“What?” Adora was taken aback. “Isn’t that the work of godmother? She’s the head Alpha, right? So why are you guys the one going in her stead?” Adora became more confused as Bella laughed instead of replying.
“Do some reading about our history before bed, okay?”
Although she still didn’t understand what was going on, Adora nodded in agreement.
“I blame Mama for shielding you from our world,” Bella whispered under her breath before going out to join the boys. As she got to where the rest were, Bella inquired about the whereabouts of the rogues.
“You should know by now that Bilal has already locked in their location,” Ares assured her.
Without wasting any time, Bilal took charge, commanding everyone to get into the vehicle, and soon, they were on their way to the rogues’ location. Minutes later, they arrived at the location.
Once they arrived at the location of the rogues, Bilal took charge and gave clear directives on how they should go about catching them. Laying out the plan, he made sure everyone understood their roles and responsibilities.
“Remember, a living rogue is an addition to the Raven Hawks,” he reminded them before, and they headed in the forest to hunt.
“Ah!” A scream from a female was heard in the distance, and Bilal yelled for them to go in that direction.
As they reached the source of the scream, Bilal wasted no time in asserting his authority. He let out a powerful roar, commanding the rogue to release the woman. “Put her down!” he bellowed, but the rogue stubbornly ignored his words and was about to harm the woman, when Bilal tapped into his Alpha power, instantly emitting a pheromone that enveloped the entire vicinity. It was like a thunderstorm.
Immediately, the rogue let go of the woman and cowered in fear. Bilal’s powerful roar had such an impact that it turned into a wail of surrender. The Alpha’s dominance was undeniable, and the rogue knew better than to challenge him.
“Take care of her,” Bilal instructed Ares before facing the rogue.
“What the…?”
Hearing the shock in Ares’s voice, Bilal turned to his friend to see him looking at the woman with wide eyes. “What is it?” Bilal questioned and moved towards him. Pulling Ares away from the woman in his hands who was the object of his shock, he took a closer look. A similar expression of shock appeared on his face. “Oh, fuc.k the goddess. Adora!”
