Prologue
Selene entered the palace of the Fates with Althea and Kari by her sides as she gave them a disappointed look.
"Couldn't this have waited? I got to spend some time with my daughter after so long, I didn't wanna leave her all alone in the party." Selene mumbled, knowing that Ophelia was in Nyx's palace, wondering when her mother would be back.
Kari smiled, "relax, Sel, she will be fine. And besides, you didn't want to make the Fates wait, did you?" She asked quirking up a perfectly arched brow which had small floral designs painted along its length.
Selene gave her an apprehensive look and sighed before shaking her head, "no. I don't." She breathed as both her fellow goddesses brought her to a stop in front of a long arched door, engraved with runic designs.
"Go ahead, we will wait for you here to escort you back." Althea said with a smile on her lips as she made a hand gesture for Selene to reach out and push open the door.
The two goddesses smiled at her with an unreadable expression before they turned around and stood facing away from the door.
Selene took in a deep breath and stepped inside through the double doors which led to the throne room.
Her eyes raised until they met the two ethereal figures responsible for the working of the entire universe that they lived in.
Selene instantly dropped into an elaborate bow in front of them when she was a few feet away from the stairs leading up to their glass thrones.
"Queen Margery, Queen Amarantha, you have my heartiest greetings and prayers." Selene said, keeping her head low as she stood with bent knees and her arms wide, "it is an honour to be in your devine presence."
Saying that, she raised her eyes to look at the two figures sitting in two separate glass throne, keeping their chins high and the thick gold crowns on their heads glinted in the light from the sky light above, which was made out of a rainbow.
The entire throne room was flooded with clouds, scattered in the air and small, shimmery dust falling from them, onto the crystal floors. The walls were cream and rose coloured and there were large mirrors attached to the walls behind their throne.
Margery looked to be a woman in her mid thirties, when in reality she had lived many eons since the beginning of time. She had tanned skin and her eyes were glowing topaz in colour, capable of seeing everything. Her hair flew down till the base of her thighs and coloured in a deep rich brown of the earth, braided with shining gold tendrils and pearls. She was dressed in a gossamer gown with a plunging neckline, and she wore a gemstone at the base of her throat which glowed like it had a heart beating inside.
And Amarantha was paler than bone, even her irisis were white from millenniums of living her life seeing the present, the past, and the future. Her hair was platinum and she was dressed in a silver gown, which hugged her body like a second skin and a similar red necklace hung around her long neck.
Both their faces were stoic, as they had always been and there was no telling about what their thoughts were, at the moment.
"Selene." Amarantha spoke, her voice coming out in a pleased whisper, and even then it sent a chill down Selene's body. "How many centuries has it been since our last encounter, dear child?"
Selene smiled warmly, "about six centuries, your Majesty." She answered.
"Far too long, in my opinion." Margery said in an uninterested tone, waving her hand dismissively.
Selene smiled, "how can I be of service for you both today?"
Both the queens exchanged a look between them before Amarantha breathed, "Althea was telling us that you would be bringing your descendant into the realm. When is that happening?"
Selene furrowed her brows, "I already brought her here, your Majesty. Didn't you know that already? She's in Nyx's palace right now."
A strange and shocked look passed over the faces of the Fates as they exchanged wary glances before looking back towards Selene.
"What is your child's name?" Margery questioned dejectedly.
Selene blinked, realizing that they should already know this. However, she still replied, "Ophelia, my queen, Ophelia Anerva of the Escalara pack in the mortal realm." She didn't feel like offending them in any manner.
Neither of the queens replied until Amarantha's white eyes widened and she clutched the handrest of her through tightly, having a vision. Her sister looked at her with a questioning expression until Amarantha's expressions relaxed and she took in a deep breath before smiling at Selene.
"Well, Selene, it is a good news for you that we found the perfect mate for your daughter." Amarantha said with an overly affectionate lilt to her voice. Selene found it strange but didn't say anything.
Margery smirked, quickly seeing her sister's thoughts as she nodded her head. "Would you like to know his name?" She asked, almost in a taunting manner.
Selene stared at their coy expressions for a moment before letting out a chuckle, she shook her head.
"As much as it kills me to say no, I wouldn't wish to interrupt my daughter's destiny. In any case, I am certain that you must have planned something fruitful for her." Her voice was honest and her words were filled with conviction.
The Fates smiled down at her and she couldn't ignore the voice nagging in the back of her mind about something being extremely wrong.
"Was there anything else, my queens?" Selene asked.
Both the women shook their heads. "That will be all, for now, Selene." Margery said with a note of finality.
Selene then nodded and bowed her head deeply once again, before walking out of the room with a heartfelt farewell to go back to her beloved daughter who was waiting for her.
That was when the Fates turned to look at each other.
"Did you really see Selene's daughter's mate?" Margery asked Amarantha.
Amarantha, scowling deeply, shook her head. "I don't even know what her daughter looks like. I can see the entire lifespans of every single creature, but not Ophelia's."
Margery sucked in a sharp breath, realizing something as she sat back defeatedly. "It's starting."
