The following day, Paul was sent into the garden to gather vegetables with Ahmed, one of the cooks he’d got to know, and a new guy, Asian and very nervous. He couldn’t believe the vampires would let them wander so freely around the large vegetable garden, but when he looked up he saw a cover which stretched clear across the small valley. “It filters out the ultraviolet light so the vampires can watch over us. Otherwise those fuckers would be charcoal,” Ahmed explained. “We reckon if one of us could make it up there with a knife, we could cut right through it and escape, though you know how well they guard those knives.” Paul nodded.
