[Zane’s pov]
Anger is an emotion I can associate as the one thing that feels so easy to dive into. What did her family think they would gain from trying to trick me? Am I known as the nicest king on this f*****g planet? Especially that Roanna girl. What the hell was she thinking?!
I’m so mad, that I’m thinking of just executing them all. I can’t do this. I will ring the breath out of her neck before this anger even wears off.
I was in my bedroom, pacing and trying not to think about the elders who had witnessed this nonsense. I am embarrassed. They probably think I’m stupid. My excitement for having a child is now churning with anger. She’s an alpha, so I know it’s not possible for me to get a child from her. I’m going to kill her in eighteen months after she has attempted desperately to give me a child.
I am that angry, and that f*****g petty.
I don’t f**k with people who f**k with me.
It’s been two days since she pulled that s**t and I have not been able to move on. What I’m doing might be cruel but I don’t give a f**k. She will make herself miserable trying to make this right, and any day I’m mad... I’m going to send someone out to hunt her family, nearly kill them, then set them free so they know their lives are in the palm of my tightly clenched hands.
“Zane.” Aspen’s soft voice drags me out of my musings. I close my eyes to control the rage that continues to pulse within my chest.
“Hi, yes. Do you need something?”
“Can we talk?” she entered the room, slowly shutting the door behind her. Aspen is my best friend in this whole world. She may be my brother’s wife, but she and I are close. She understands me, and sometimes it’s easier to talk to her than it is to talk to my older brother.
“Yeah, come on.” I motioned for her to follow me toward the chairs set next to the open window.
I stood, but she sat, making herself comfortable.
“So, Malek, says he told you so.” I snarl, but she only chuckles. “I heard you offered her a different contract, and I wanted to talk to you about that.”
“Don’t say it. Don’t f*****g say it.” Most people would be offended by my tone. The harsh way I’m spewing each word, but she isn’t. It sort of pours ice into my anger.
“I’m gonna say it because you need to hear it. This is only to punish her and while I do agree she needs to be punished, maybe you should consider taking her out of her cellar. Technically, she signed the contract, you two are married.”
I flinched just hearing that. I don’t want to be married to that awful woman.
Aspen rose out of the chair, she walked towards me before speaking again. “You know I’ve got your back. The entirety of Soleria will never forgive her, but that woman down there.... she deserves a little chance. Maybe try to work it out. You might like her.”
“I don’t want to like her, I want her dead.”
“Then kill her, but if you really want to go through with this torture, then you’ll need to bring her out of her cell. And you’ll need to attempt to have a child. She’s trying to save her family.”
“Don’t sympathize with her, she tricked us.”
“I know, but if you look at her reasons-”
“I don’t want to. I really don’t want to. And I don’t want you asking me too.”
she raised both of her hands. “I was talking to one of your elders, and the reason I’m here is because I know at your next meeting they are going to suggest it,”
I frowned, doubt filling me up. But I know she wouldn’t lie to me, so perhaps I’m misreading her words. My elders were against me giving Roanna a contract, they only agreed when I explained that she was bound to fail.
“Remember how we’re always saying that Solerians love you too f*****g much?” I nodded. My people adore me. “Well, one of your elders knows a native Solerian doctor, who can put Roanna through a set of treatments that will alter her DNA from alpha to an omega for one month. Which would allow her to get pregnant. But since she’s part descendant, she can die during the process of birth.”
“That’s what they want to suggest?”
“Yes, it’s inhumane, Zane. Altering DNA is wrong. We’re not supposed to f**k without genetic makeup.”
“But I would get a child?”
“Zane! Are you even listening to me?”
I was listening, and if I can still gain something out of this then shouldn’t I do it? It does sound cruel to force someone to alter their designated DNA just so I can punish them and have a child. It’s a win-win.
“You’re not actually considering it? Are you? Zane that is messed up, those tests could kill her... it could lead to her never being able to be a wolf ever again.”
“Aspen, you’re the best friend I have in this world, but I don’t care if this is messed up. I won’t force her to do it, and hey, I’ll even move her into my room.”
“You think she’ll agree to this?”
“She signed the contract. She said she would do anything.”
her face showed what she was feeling. “Zane.”
“Don’t do that. Don’t judge me.”
“Okay, I won’t. Alright, if she agrees to it, then I will butt out. I promise you.”
“You really promise?”
“I watched your brother slaughter his elders on the first week I was in Wyndora, trust me. I’ll move past this. It’s not my place to tell two consenting adults what to do. Even though I don’t like it. And I’m sure this is going to kill her.”
“So you approve? Great. We’ll discuss it with her, and then she can begin her treatment.”
Aspen still looked skeptical, but she’d said her piece so she let me handle this by myself. And to no one’s surprise, Roanna agreed to it.
That should have worried me. The lengths she was willing to go to keep those people safe. How unfortunate, for her.
I don’t care. She has only one use for me, and that’s it.
If she’s looking for sympathy, tough s**t. She’s asking for it in the wrong spot, with the wrong guy. This isn’t a typical marriage. In fact, she’s basically just a fill-in. I didn’t want to marry her, and that won’t change now. Thankfully this is only contracted. Once I have what I want, it’s over for her. And I won’t feel guilty for thinking that way.
Don’t anger a king of Draconia. It can only end poorly.
