Chapter Eight Rhodes was understandably horrified when Violet told him that Wintersmith was a Bow Street Runner and that he’d captured her. His face paled, something she’d read about in novels but never actually seen happen in real life. “He thought you were using a balloon? Thank heavens he didn’t realize the truth. That would have been a disaster!” Violet had found her brother in the library, where he was reading the newspapers. She shifted her weight uncomfortably and said, “He escorted me home, and I used the just-in-case latchkey you gave me, and then . . . I followed him again, I’m sorry, and he saw me.” Rhodes didn’t grow paler, but he did wince with his whole face. She ought not to have followed Wintersmith that second time, but Rhodes didn’t point out that very obvious truth.
