Getting To Know Her

1931 Words
Damien's POV I have been getting a lot better, and I owe it all to Chloe, a woman who has helped me to get back on my feet. Yesterday, I had my first memory; I remembered what happened the day the plane landed, well, some parts of it, along with a lot of things I didn't want to believe. I was fighting for my life. The guys that killed my crew, tried to take me out as well, but I fought for my life and took one of the parachutes; I made my escape as the plane went down. I was bothered by the fact that I asked her not to call the police. It all made sense, why I couldn't have anyone know where I was. I was set up; I don't know by who, but until I do, I have to make sure that no one knows that I survived the plane crash. I didn't tell Chloe the whole truth; I have been remembering some parts of my life; the only problem is that the memories I get are not pleasant at all; they show me as a man I don't want to be. If what my memory is showing is the man I was before I came here, then I would rather stay here and be the man that Chloe needs right now. When I first saw her face, I thought that I was looking at an angel. It's hard to see her being mistreated in any way. The fact that she came here to get away from a man makes me angry; what kind of a man would harm a woman like that? I keep stealing looks at her when she's not looking. I have never seen a woman so beautiful and kind. She didn't have to help me. She could have called the cops, but she trusted me, a complete stranger. A part of me wants to make a move on her, but I fear that I might just scare her off, which is the last thing I want to do. I told her that she could trust me, that she could count on me to have her back, that I would not let her down, and that I refused to be another man in her life who disappointed her. Last night, she told me that I could use the bedroom next to hers. I know I shouldn't have, but I woke up in the middle of the night and snuck into her bedroom; she was sleeping. I stood over her bed and watched her. I gently kissed her forehead. When I went back to bed, I couldn't stop thinking about her. I couldn't go back to sleep. When the light came, I went outside and got more wood. The snow had begun to melt, but it was still cold. She chose the worst place on earth to hide herself during winter. I mean, the mountains are already cold. The winter just made it worse. Chloe has been taking care of us. It's time I returned the favor. " Something smells good," she said as she walked into the kitchen and found me making us breakfast. " Hey, good morning, take a seat. Breakfast is almost ready, " I said to her. " I didn't know you could cook," she said and pulled a chair. " I didn't either, but somehow, when I came in here, it's like I knew what to do," I said to her. " Maybe you were a chef?" she said to me. I laughed a bit. We have been trying to piece together who I was before I came here, Chloe has been coming up with some potential jobs I could have done. " I don't know, maybe," I said and put the eggs on her plate. " This looks great, but you know that you didn't have to do this, right?" she said to me. " It's the least I could do. Also, I thought that it could be an apology for yesterday, I didn't mean to overstep," I said to her. " It's okay... You were right; there is no friend. The person I was talking about was me," she said to me. She looked at her hand, took off the ring, and put it on the table. " Your husband, what happened? Was he always like that?" I asked her. " Not at first; things changed when he married me; he became someone I couldn't even recognize," she said to me. " How did you get away?" I asked her. " I planned my escape from that man for months, down to every detail, I had my best friend find this place for me," she said to me. " So what? Are you separated? Do you plan on going back and fixing things with him?" I asked her. " I would never go back to that man. I was actually planning on starting with the divorce proceedings, but I know that it won't be easy; he will do everything in his power to have the last word," she said to me. Her tone muffled up like she would choke; she is afraid of this man, I don't know what he did to her, but whatever it is, I have to make sure that he doesn't find her. But right now, I can't do anything. Chloe and I are getting to know each other. If she found out who I was, it would ruin things for me. I know that I have to go back home at some point, I just don't want to be alone when I do it. " Why now? Why did you decide to leave now?" I asked her. " Let's just say that I found a reason to live for," she said to me. " Fair enough," I said to her. I didn't want to push her. I got my plate and sat down next to her. " So, have you remembered anything else?" she asked me. " No, nothing yet," I said and sipped my coffee. " So, now that you are getting better, and I think that the WiFi is working again, what's next?" she said to me. " Now we try to find out who I am," I said to her. I know who I might be, and I am not sure that I want her to know. " But where would we even begin?" she said to me. " I don't know, maybe search if anyone saw the crash?" I said to her. " That could be a bit of a stretch; there was a snowstorm for about a week, until the snow melts; I doubt if anyone would have found anything, but it's a start," she said to me. " Sure, we could do that," I said to her. " I'll go and grab the laptop in my bedroom," she said and stood up. As soon as she disappeared upstairs, I took a pair of scissors and went outside, I cut the line connected to the WiFi router. By the time she came back, I was already in my seat where she left me. She put the laptop on the table and switched it on. " That's weird. The WiFi network is off," she said. " I thought you said it was fine," I said to her. " Well, it was a few minutes ago," she said, looking worried. She took her phone, and it didn't have a WiFi as well. " Well, this just sucks," she said to me. " Isn't there someone we can call to come and check it?" I asked her. " I can't risk that, Derrick is looking for me. He has people everywhere," she said to me. " What is he? Some gangster or something?" I asked her. " He is a lawyer, but he might as well be a gangster. The man is dangerous," she said to me. I can tell that she is afraid of this man. A part of me wanted to reassure her that she was going to be fine and that I could handle him, but I couldn't do that without exposing myself to her that I had my memory back. Her phone rang. " It's my friend," she said and stood up to take the call. She told me that her best friend helped her to get away from her husband, I can only wonder what she will say when she finds out that she is not alone. A few minutes passed by, and she came back into the kitchen looking worried. " What's wrong?" I asked her. " My friend told me that my mother is in the hospital, I have to go and see her," she said to me. " What happened?" I asked her. " She said that she drove into a tree, which is surprising because my mother drives below the speed limit, I have to go and see her," she said to me. " I wouldn't do that if I were you," I said to her. " What do you mean? What kind of a daughter would I be if I didn't go and check on my mother in hospital? " she said to me. " The kind of daughter that doesn't want to be found," I said to her. " What are you saying to me right now? That Derrick did this?" she asked me. " Think about it; you said it yourself: the man won't stop looking for you. Do you think that this was an accident?" I said to her. To me, it is clear as daylight that if I was looking for someone who didn't want to be found, I would use the people she loves to lure her out. " Still, I have to see my mother," she said to me. " Then you are going to need a plan because believe me when I say this, your husband has every inch of that place covered, just waiting for you to show up, if he planned this like I think he did, you won't even see your mother; he will grab you as soon as you're spotted; it might not even be at the hospital," I said to her. " You're right, this is a trick from him; I told you that he was dangerous; if he could do this to my mother, that means that he won't stop at her; who's next? My best friend? I have to stop this before it gets out of hand," she said to me. She is right, the man is dangerous, he would do anything, even kill for Chloe, I don't want to lose her just as I had found her, but if she doesn't come up with a plan, I might just have to show her my true colors and risk losing her forever. " What are you going to do?" I asked her. " I have a plan, and you are going to help me," she said to me. " Of course, whatever you need," I said to her. We sat down and talked about her plan. It was a good plan, but it was risky, not just for her, but for me as well. It is clear that someone wants me dead until I find out who it is, I have to remain hidden. Her plan is going to expose both of us; I am not; I am up for that, but I want to help her. Which is why I have a plan of my own.
